Get a director who takes the respectful Nolan approach, and get a writing team that can craft a story where you actually empathize with the characters and dont cringe at the dialogue. Getting lead actors who have chemistry with one another would probably be a good idea too.

Quoted for emphasis.

A movie always, no matter what it's about, reflects it's times. I wasn't alive in the late 70's(I was born in '86), so I can't judge Superman: The Movie based on the sensiblities of the people who made it. All I can judge it on is my own sense of what makes a good movie. And I found it to be corny as all get out. The movie doesn't speak to me the way it did to the people who watched it back then.

My point being, why did Singer expect a sequel to a 30 year-old movie to be a great success? That time, those people, are long gone. This is a different time, with different people, with a different vision of what a Superman movie is supposed to be.

This post is the perfect example of why WB should have listened to the fan base as well as realizing the age group of the demographic that mostly fuels the box office on a movie such as Superman. Which is almost exactly the same audience as the Spider-man series.

While I don't advocate aping the formula for Spider-man I think that a Superman movie should be like a Spider-man movie on steroids.

Instead SR was Spider-man lite.

complete restart............just like Batman Begins.........but I guess we'll have to wait another 10 or 20 years now.......as Singer wasted the opportunity......sigh.

Personally, I absolutely loved Superman Returns, so I would most definitely want a sequel instead of a reboot. :supes:

and if the director and writers are creative enough.......they could do the classic origin story.....but do it differently enough so that it won't be a rehash of the Donner origin.....

granted....I wouldn't want a drastic change ala the Abrams script........but I'm sure a creative director could come up with something different....yet still repectful and true to the character.......

I hated the "spinning-the-world-backward-to-reverse-time" power, but now, I do wish that current Superman can use that power to reverse time so that the events on SR never existed, or, better yet, the movie itself never existed!

LOL.

Seriously though it's a tricky one..the reboot. Even though I love the original i feel its incredibly dated. Maybe if they made it like batman begins and have flashbacks to Clarks childhood plus a flashback scene when hes in the fortress learning the history of his omeworld. We could be shown a grand planet of fine arts and science, NOT a miserable snowplanet.

Do a reboot, but keep the cast because while the movie failed in several areas, cast is not the main problem. Get a new director and new writing team, and base the story on graphic novels like "Birthright" or "Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorow?" They can lay the groundwork for better Superman sequels.

Btw, this thread should be a poll so we can see how many ppl wanted a restart, or a sequel.

Origin would have been ok. But ever since seeing SR i've always said i wanted a sequel but with alot more from the Superman mythos.

well....how bout an origin movie that incorporated more of the mythos........

Well said damnit. I personally think Singer did a great job with SR, but i don't think i'm the first to say it could have been better.

that's what I tried to to do in my Origin idea thread.....

the first movie would have to have Lex as the human baddie ( Ruthless Corporate Lex.....not campy Donner Lex ).......but we could also have a larger threat........an alien like GENERAL Zod.

now....before you say....NOT ZOD AGAIN!!! you could do Zod differently....not the leather clad Zod with minions from Superman 1 and 2.

no.....Zod could be portrayed as a real evil b*****d.....a real KRYPTONIAN GENERAL.....dressed in full KRYPTONIAN MILITARY GARB.......a general who was banished to the Phantom Zone for committing treason.......he betrayed his planet and committed genocide ( or made it possible for someone else )......wiping out an entire race of people....whom he deemed inferior.....

so......give Zod an interesting backstory.....make him the super-powered badguy for the first movie......have Supes and Zod have an epic, super-powered fight unlike anything we have ever seen ( satisfying the action fans )......have Supes beat Zod by the slimmest of margins......

but....then....at the end....reveal that Zod was just the front for an even larger threat.......a threat that will really put Superman's powers and courage to the test......a threat like....Darkseid!!!

the premise being....that General Zod betrayed Krypton and defected to Darkseid......working for Darkseid.....Zod committed genocide....wiping out an entire race.....when Zod was finally captured and brought back to Krypton...he was punished and banished to the phantom zone.....

but now.....Darkseid learns of a Kryptonian survivor (Superman).....frees Zod from his prison....and sends Zod to earth to kill Superman......so that Darkseid is free to attack and destroy Earth......

I mean.....an origin movie could have done something similar......using familiar characters like Lex and Zod.....but doing them differently.....and also introducing or hinting at new elements of the Superman mythos, like Darkseid, letting people know that......yes this is an origin movie again....but this time we will be seeing very different stuff in this movie and in its sequels......

sadly....we didn't get anything like that.....sigh...

Like i said, i liked what Singer brought for the franchise. It just it could have better a little better is all i'm saying. Your origin idea is great man, kudos. Darkseid and Zod? I'd pay to see that!

thanks spider-man.......if you like that....read my "Origin idea using scenes from SR" thread......

I basically detail the above plot for an origin movie.....while using some of the best scenes from SR.......IOW.....using the same elements and scenes from SR.....changing them around....and putting them in a different context....while trying to create a Superman story that really speaks to the heart and core of the character....which, imo, SR really missed the mark...

well....enough of my shameless plug.....lol...

Welcome.

That's great using elements and than basing out for an origin. I think if Singer took that route it would have been great.

Do you have a link to your thread? I'd like to check it out later. :spidey:

thanks spider-man..

I believe this is the link:
http://www.superherohype.com/forums/showthread.php?t=246373

If that link doesn't work.....Just go to the Superman ( Spoilers ) forum....and scroll down.....it's a thread called "My ideas for an Origin movie using scenes from SR"

I detail my plot outlines over the course of several posts.........I must warn you, though.......I do express my dislike of SR in my posts.....and I sometimes take jabs at the most "offensive" elements of SR.....

So.....since you liked SR.....I just hope you won't get offended....but I hope you enjoy.....thanks.

I'd go the restart route with Lex and Metallo as the villians setting the stage for Brainac in part 2 . Part 3 could feature Darkshied .

SR was a pretty cool movie so a great sequel will be much more pleasing than waiting a couple of decades just to start over. If you hate Singer's Supes so much than shut up and buy a comic you lamesters!!!

Glad you liked it. Welcome to the hype.

I think they should wait a while like 5 years or so, and start from scratch. There's absolutely no where to go in the next movie, because they screwed up the basic premise of Superman, which is the relationship of Lois and Superman.

Lois should not be with someone else, she should be with Superman, and WB should have realized that, in this cluser you know what of a movie.

I think Singer is done directing big budget movies. He needs to go back to doing art house flicks.

Bluetights.net started out well, but then lost any objectivity it had when it buddied up with Singer to get his production blogs. Now you cant so much as post a negative opinion on any aspect of the film without getting attacked by the posters there, and then banned by their moderators.

I think it's obivous to WB their not getting objective feedback on the film there from their 2000 or so users
Yep the board there is totally uselss. I wish the owners would grow a pair and stop kissing ass up to WB.

Jason must have a tv series if there's to be another vague sequel.
