Doctor Sleep

Its a solid adaptation of Doctor Sleep for 2/3s of the film. The movie is excellently crafted, Ewan does a terrific job as a recovering addict and is extremely likable as Dan. I think it falters towards the end because it absolutely retreads what you remember about the shining in the worst ways. Dan does a walkthrough of the hotel and it’s basically a greatest hits segment, turn one corner and the twins saying come play with us, turn the next and “great party” guy, I was flabbergasted by these choices, and it’s unfortunate considering how well it’s shot, reminiscent of hill house. Mike does an ultimate switcharoo in the end that he probably believed rectifies kubricks ending and inserts the original ending to Kings novel by swapping character places, it did not work for me and ultimately had me walking away unsatisfied.
- Henry Thomas as Jack was extremely distracting in a bad way, this might’ve been changed since the first cut.
-Alex Esso does a terrible mock impression of Shelly Duvall.
-Carl Lumbly nails Hallorann.

Thanks for responding, never read the books or seen the first movie but may check this out.

The first reactions are hitting twitter. Looks like Flanagan May have hit a home run.

This has advanced screenings on Halloween right? That's a good move, the film should be opening on 1st to begin with

I'm gonna try to see this on Wednesday. It's playing up the street from me.

Looks like King is finally making his peace with Kubrick’s film.

I'm seeing this tomorrow night. I'm so excited! I'll let you guys know my thoughts.

I really love the way Superherohype preserves threads. It's like a time capsule. :) I had no idea this film had been discussed in 2014.

Ewan McGregor if anything is one of my favorite actors so to see him pick up this franchise from where Jack Nicholson left off in 1980...I love it.

'Doctor Sleep': Film Review

But just when things threaten to slow to a stall, you can count on Ferguson to roar to the occasion to shake you; when she’s around, she’s the whole show, threatening, cajoling, erotically boiling when prey is at hand. The actress, along with the character, looks to be having a jolly old time — playing outrageous villains seems to have that effect on thespians — and she gives every moment she’s onscreen here a real kick.

Film Review: ‘Doctor Sleep’

“Doctor Sleep” is a prosaic movie, but one that earns its shock waves of emotion. It isn’t until the final third that the story settles back into the Overlook Hotel (though there’s a quickie sort of prologue set there), and by the time we get to the fabled lodge, perched in the snowy Colorado Rockies, it’s more than a stunt; we feel as if the story has earned the right to go back. Every third horror film these days is set in a haunted house, but the Overlook remains uniquely alive with its lavishly coordinated demons.

Saw this tonight. Loved it. The Shining is a classic. So comparing this to that is unfair. Plus, this movie is VERY different. But, THIS is how you make a sequel. Not by making the same movie again and banking on nostalgia, but by telling your audience a new story and expanding on what came before.

Do to commitments involving Halloween I won't be able to make the early showings in my area. But I am so ready for next week. Flanagan is a boss and Ferguson looks like fire in this.

I was a little let down in places. It's a solid movie, but some screws needed to be tightened to take it to that next level. I felt the first act was paced a teeny quick, like it got trimmed some. I could have seen a longer version of this movie. Flanagan has such a handle of things it probably would have worked. But once it settles in, I thought it was great, but then the third act at times just took me out of it. I'll elaborate more, but I walked away not totally satisfied and this being my least favorite Flanagan piece. I think there was a much better movie in there that got trimmed by the studio. Not in a compromised way, but one where less was more.

Caught this last night. I thought this was great up until
the Overlook came back into play. It almost felt like I was watching a different movie, because up until then this movie was its own beast. Also, you can't replace Jack; although I felt the new Wendy did great.

Otherwise, the direction was phenomenal, as was the cast, especially Rebecca Ferguson.
