^ Nice list, except Bob Marley. I'm not a very big fan of reggae.

Yeah, I had Speakerboxx / Love Below. My dad played it in his car all the time. I hated it then, and I still do today. Once the fad of "Hey Ya" wore off, I becam succeptible to how bad I thought it was.

"Hey Ya" isn't even the best song on The Love Below, so.... *shrug*

And I refuse to ever listen to a Jay-Z album the whole way through. For me, he's laid The Blueprint for what modern day rap has become: the ultimate promotion if the stereotypical black lifestyle, one that portrays women as little more than mere sex objects and that protrays the African AMerican cluture as nothing more cop hatin, ho promoitng "gangstas".

Then how you can classify it merely based on hearing a radio single? Everyone knows the meat of an artist's work is on their albums, and not what the label can sell with a video. Sit down and "force" yourself to listen to a Jay-Z album, and then feel free to make that kind of generalization if it does indeed stick. And preferably listen to either "The Blueprint" or "The Black Album", and don't dare buy "Kingdome Come" ('cause even great artists can make sh***y records).

As Jay himself said on "Renegade":

Say that I'm foolish
I only talk about jewels
Do you fools listen to music
Or do you just skim through it?

Look, I already stated my opinion on rap music. I can't stand it. I don't care for it. Therefore, if I'm not a big fan of rap singles, what makes you think I will like an entire rap album?

So be it.

You can go back to whining about how terrible alternative rockity rock is nowadays. I'm off to go listen to some crap rap. :word:

Just to show you how people´s perception of music changes over time, if you lived back in the seventies and you liked The Clash, it was considered "Blasphemy" to like Pink Floyd or Genesis. From punks´POV, progressive rock was everything wrong with the world... Don´t even get me started on the Beatles vs. Stones battles...

I don't really listen to alt rock, unless prog rock is considered the basis of alt rock. And not all the rock today is alt rock.

Bob is the greatest musician ever. In my opinion. Seriously, overlook the reggae part. He's far more diverse than that.
I wasn't saying he wasn't.
I should have said that I listen to everything on that list but Marley.
He's an amazing artist, his style just isn't my cup of tea.

Thanks for the suggestion.

And Aerosmith and Simon & Garfunkel do not suck. And for my money, I've never been more moved by an artist's music than Bob Marley's.

aerosmith is a poor man's rolling stones. and i can't stand art garfunkel. i do like paul simon's solo stuff a LOT, though.

i LOVE bob marley, too. but bob's not a great musician. i don't even consider him to be a musician. bob was a political figure. he was a religious figure.

That's what everyone calls Aerosmith. I guess it's somewhat true, but they have create dsome of the finest rock of the last 30 years. Though The Rolling Stones are their superiors.

Really, I love Art. I thin he's a superior singer to Simon. Different strokes, I guess.

Agreed on Bob to a degree. He wasn't a great musician in the way Page or Chuck Berry (my all time favorite artist next to Bob) was, but as a songwriter, he was one of a kind. Plus, few artists can claim having the impact on the music world as well as the social world that Bob did. His music pretty much freed Zimbabwe.

if you're going to listen to classic rock, i don't know why anyone would want to listen to aerosmith over the hundreds of other bands.

garfunkel's weird for the sake of being weird. i'm over it.

bob had a pretty feeble working knowledge of the guitar, and i'm being generous with that.
and as a songwriter, he was an anomaly. on paper, his songs are poorly written soundbytes. but when he sung them, they became more than words or lyrics. he was gifted in that way.

It all boils down. I love Aerosmith because I'm blown away by Joe Perry's guitar playing abilities. Plus, they're just a great, fun, energetic band.

Don't see how Art is weird, but eh, to each his own.

Bob said himself he had no education, so it's no surprise his words may seem weak at first. But "Redemption Song", "Buffalo Soldier", "Is This Love" and "No Woman, No Cry" are all beautifully written. His voice is amazing, too. It didn't hold a great deal of range, but the way he interpreted his songs was just stunning.

As for his guitar playing abilities, yeah he was pretty weak. He learned most of his abilities from Peter Tosh.
