Doomsday is today!

Well i mean he does lose hold of Doomsday in a the atmosphere if you watch and they exchange blows. I think we all know that a full powered Supes could have just thrown him in space but to be honest that would be more lack luster than the "super nuke" if you will. For story telling purposes the way he killed him worked out fine.

Just finished the DVD. It is not as bad as everyone says it is. Superman vs. Doomsday was brutal but Supes has been in more exciting battles as people have mentioned. Would have loved if the movie had followed the comic book.

I've missed your reviews dread were are you posting these days?

98% of my posts are around the Comic Book forums, either MARVEL COMICS or MISC. COMICS.

SHH gave little word they were nixing the TMNT forums. I mean I know with interest in Fast Forward waning, it was inevitable, but damn.

really enjoyed it, usual gripes as everyone else supes face looks too craggy, lois' voice grates but other than that really enjoyable. I will definately get this on dvd.

I can't but wonder if they'd made the live action of this instead of the boring piece of **** superman returns they may have actually made spiderman numbers at the box office.

I sort of liked SUPERMAN RETURNS although I do agree with you in the effect that had SR had some more imposing villains and better, more rivetting action, it would have done better. Because, quite frankly, Luthor & Kryptonite have really been done to death at this point. I mean, SPIDER-MAN 3 in terms of story quality was the worst of the trilogy, but it provided plenty of action with no less than 3 villains and the audiences responded. Even GHOST RIDER offered more action.

In terms of this DVD, I will say the extras dept. is miles superior to anything Marvel/Lion's Gate has pushed out. They have a commentary track, a featurette about the DEATH & RETURN of Superman from the comics from the perspective of the writers/editors, and a look behind the scenes at the voice acting dept. Of course, this is standard fare for some of the "Timmverse" releases, but good to see the extras here.

In watching the featurette about the comic version of the story, I still regret that this film didn't lift more from it, like Timm & Co. had no faith in stuff. Inserting other superheroes in the battles and mourning helped add to it; in a way, aside for the "Lois/Martha Kent Porch" scene, the concept of "Funeral For a Friend" was handled better in the JL episode HEREAFTER, PART 1 from the second season (IMO). And I still think if they wanted an "Evil Superman", they should have either gone all out and just made him Bizarro (as they literally ripped off that episode from S:TAS) or used Cyborg Superman from REIGN OF THE SUPERMEN, because he was evil anyway. It just seemed like a lazy way of recycling model sheets.

Oh, and the featurette didn't actually show Superboy in panel pics, likely because of legal issues with the Siegal & Shuster Families.

Still, though, there is plenty to like here, and in terms of story quality and action it is easily better than INVINCIBLE IRON MAN or even ULTIMATE AVENGERS II. Just a shame it wasn't longer and more faithful. JLA: NEW FRONTIER may show us, finally, what happens when you really trust the source material.

Superman looked like Seal. those cheek bones looked like scars!!!

The problem is the style they keep using for Superman is too simplistic and thus defined cheekbones/lines usually just make him look old. Such as in Season One of Justice League. I will say, though, that I loved the colors on his costume. They made a costume that some would say is outdated, yet too classic to ever change, look really dynamic in motion. Which is the most important part of a superhero flick anyway.

I am looking forward to seeing the styles of NEW FRONTIER and THE BATMAN's guest appearence, so a DC animated Kal from after the 80's can have eyes again. ;)

agreed completely with your review except the final scores, would have given it B+ or 4/5 or 8/10 I think we as fans have been truly spoilt by the cadmus storyline which is THE best comic animated storyline ever no one is ever going to come CLOSE to that again so we are judging animated next to that, frankly everything is going to fall short but on its own merit I found the movie well paced with brilliant coreographed(sp) fight sequences but

a) dc heroes would have enhanced this movie
when superman faught doomsday in the comic before hand he (doomsday) cuts through the JL like a hot knife through butter it was a apparant the ONLY being on the planet to beat him or even slow him down was superman, this movie lacked the build up and tention

also at the funeral the mourners are essentially the people from metropolis how much better would it have been if the entire dc universe had turned up and also a cameo by batman observing from the shadows, that would have given weight to the scenes but you would see the greatest of them was gone and ALL the heroes have come to pay tribute.

WB OWNS dc they could have used anyone, I understand the reasons to have superman alone but if you are going to make the 'death of superman' then don't hold back.

b) keep him dead for part of the movie
I remember as a kid watching superman 2 and supes has given up his powers to be with lois the 3 villians are tearing up the white house and then the daily planet all the while you are wondering where the heck is superman, then in a blur of wind superman turns up and you are almost cheering, imagine how less impact that scene would have been if you saw superman throughout, when superman died I would have had at LEAST ten minutes where you don't get a HINT of superman, let the world feel loss let them mourn, then introduce the fake superman with STILL no hint of the real superman, and when you think the world is stuck with this evil doppleganger THEN introduce superman for maximum impact.

the movie was well paced for me except this which frankly felt rushed.

dread a favour, do you have the review for spidey 3/batman begins and superman returns and TMNT movie. you don't have to post them here but links to them would be greatly appreichated. :yay:

Spider niel is right why didnt all the DC universe characters show up?. S/D lacked any epic feel which is essential to a superman movie it felt like a cheap cash in if your gonna do it, do it right or not at all.

Its not a film i can watch over again the only memorable part was the doomsday fight which was quite short mask of the phantasm is still DC only good animated movie. and on the subject of other dc animated movies why havent we seen any of Wonderwoman Martian manhunter etc? its as if DC has no faith in any of thier characters to do well except Bats and supes and i for one am getting a little bored of seeing them over and over.

God knows the live action Wonder Woman movie is in development hell. Let's see an animated one.

I'd love to see a firestorm animated movie, poor guy didn't even show up in JLU, heck everyone BUT firestorm showed up in that show.

No, Blue Beetle deserves to be shot in the face. Besides, wasn't he in that one episode of JLU that was all about Booster?

Anyways, the movie was overly meh. I could have done without the cadre of B and C-list voice talent that was distracting me from the movie. If Lois sounds like a raspy, cigarette smoking, mutant lesbo, then at least give her a cigarette. It's too late to go back, you've already had Doomsday brutally extinguish peoples lives and said naughty words like "ass" "damn" and "hell," to prove to us that this is no little kids movie; give Lois her only real means to cope.

Other things were distracting as well, like... Jimmy's ear ring, the Toyman was an emo/goth pedophile, Jimmy's ear ring, those perky cheek bones, Kevin Smith (lame), and Jimmy's ear ring.

In spite of all that, the fight was spectacular but could have ended more dramatically. The way it ended was kind of disappointing although I'm sure some DC fans would say, 'Most badass fight, EVAR.' But still, a good movie for fanboys of slugfests.

No! The episode starred Booster and his robot Skeets, and featured brief appearances from Batman, J'onn, and Elongated Man.

The lines on Superman's face was the only disappointing aspect for me.

The other character designs I actually really liked. Especially Lois'.

I agree........I understand what Dread said. Maybe they should have stuck with the JLU Superman design.

The small differences in desin from other supes animated drawings mean nothing to me its not the movies problem its the poor voice cast (baring supes) and the film going downhill the moment the fight with doomsday ends its a mediocre movie imo DC GIVE YOUR OTHER CHARACTERS A CHANCE supes and bats have been done to death.

I just saw Domsday about an hour and a half ago, and I wasn't really entertained.

It took me a while to get a copy. I went all over town and found that they were flying off the shelves. I heard that in one store (it was a Wall-mart) a woman from a video rental store had come in and purchased 34 copies (depleting their stock). I finally found one in a Best Buy on the other side of town.

After watching it I have to say it was certainly nothing fancy as far as the fighting went (just straight out get-it-over-with hard punching), but what was noticeable was the wanton killing (which is why it got the PG-13 rating). The subtle things that I saw (that those of you who plan to see the film will enjoy) were that there was some elements of Superdickery in the video and I also could have sworn that I saw what should have been a cameo appearance of Lindsay Lohan and Paris Hilton (I could have even swore I saw Brandon Routh fighting Tom Welling but it could have been my imagination running amok) and a classic Kevin Smith cameo making a reference to a mechanical spider. Just that alone made the video a classic in my book. Anyway it is worth owning or renting. If any of you can't get a copy in the next week or two, I think it is on pay-per-view. Just check with your local cable company or Dish Network.

I have reviews all three of those films; the TMNT was purged when that forum was removed. The other two would seriously be buried in their respective topics. I could try to hunt down links but I am not making any promises.

Here is SPIDER-MAN 3 though:

http://forums.superherohype.com/showpost.php?p=11617981&postcount=2492

The interesting thing is that when HEREAFTER aired, many people complained because they wished that it was more like the actual comic, with Doomsday and all. Yet in retrospect some ways they handled the mourning (the Funeral for a Friend bit) was superior. Firstly, Superman was off-screen longer; he "died" seemingly within the first 5 minutes and his survival was only confirmed at the last few seconds of episode one; that was at least some 15+ minutes, which was longer. Secondly, you had all of the basic beats from S: D at the funeral (Lois, Perry, Jimmy, Ma & Pa in the background, Lois being disgusted when Luthor appears, hundreds of mourners, etc) plus in addition every superhero who had a major appearence thus far: The Green Lantern Corps, Dr. Fate, the Justice League themselves, even Aquaman and his Atlantian relations. You also had Batman refusing to believe it was true and giving a quiet eulogy.

The interesting thing about HEREAFTER was actually how shocking it was; had we seen Doomsday, we'd immediately know what was on. But there, we had Toyman and a big robot of all things seemingly doing Superman in; how random. Yeah, Timm has a thing for Toyman it seems. And then you had Wonder Woman starting to tear up and a second from avenging him. It wasn't as melodramatic in some ways but it worked.

S: D on the other hand had some very powerful music leading up to "the moment". I agree, some other heroes would have added to the action. Some people are of the idea that Superman is best when he is the only hero, but I usually disagree.

God knows the live action Wonder Woman movie is in development hell. Let's see an animated one.

Exactly! I mean, Marvel took that approach for doing a DTV about DOCTOR STRANGE, and it was among their best. WONDER WOMAN or some of the other belated characters would be good.

Anyway, I listened to the commentary track last night and it was very interesting. And a lot more honest than the butt-kissing sort of retrospectives Marvel DTV's had.

I DO like this movie overall, it is still good to me. But, damn, part of me is still pissed that Timm & Co, albeit for some decent reasons, dropped the ball on creating what could have been the best Bizarro ever. I mean if they'd just followed through a little bit more, this could have been HEART OF ICE for Bizarro. But that is a very personal peeve.

I have to admit, "Red and green, the colors of Christmas!" cracks me up every time. It is SO true. :D
