Dormammu - the dread thread

He can do like Hive in Agent Ward lol

Dormammu was awesome. Frightening. I get why they didn't give him a flaming head, with Surtur coming in.

However, his face was divided like the old school comic version

Anyone finding any info as to who did the voice?

Hmm. So the scene from the IMAX preview where Strange talks to a giant floating head was NOT in the movie. Maybe it's a deleted scene. Or just some kind of pre-visualization/special effects test for Dormammu.

Oh? really. Why they'd choose a scene to showcase VFX / a scene not in the movie is a bit 'strange' though.

I thought he just did the Mocap

Hmmm... looks like he did the voice along with someone else:

To create the character, Cumberbatch provided motion-capture reference for the visual effects team, and his voice was blended with that of another uncredited British actor, whom Derrickson described as having "a very deep voice."

I wonder who the mystery actor was. I would die if it was Martin Freeman.

the second time Cumby played two roles in a big franchise movie

I liked how his face looked, with the lines serving as a callback to how he used to be drawn in the comics.

Biggest thing that bugged me though was the movie seemed to turn him into a lawyer-friendly Galactus. The purple motif his appearance has, the fact that he apparently devours worlds. I get it, Galactus is a more popular villain than Dormammu, but still, it rubs me the wrong way.

From what I read the reason for the change was apparently Ditko always meant for Dormammu to have a head engulfed in gas, but other artists interpreted it as flame.

The Dark Dimension destruction in Hong Kong and Strange flying up to a confront Doramammu reminded me of Galactus' destruction of Shanghai and Silver Surfer flying up to confront Galactus in the second Fantastic Four.

Same!!
I wonder if we'll see him again? I'm not huge on DS lore but I think Dormammu is one of his main big bads. Perhaps they're saving him for DS 2 or 3

You guys noticed
Kaecelious and his zealots became Mindless Ones at the end too, right? They weren't bulky but they were grey and had a single red beam for their eyes.

That's very interesting. Thanks for that.

Yeah.
I think that's what Strange said to Kaecillus about immortality, in the Dark Dimension not being what he thought it was, I think he said "You're not going to like it" so yeah, I reckon he and the other zealots were converted into Mindless Ones.

In some ways, while I'm glad Dormammu was in there, if they do make some sequels it will be interesting/challenging for them to work him in again, without it seeming a bit repetitive. I mean, the bad guy for the sequel
is clearly going to be Mordo, which will also be challenging, to make up to the same standard as the first film
. I hope this isn't the last we've seen of Dormammu, and when he does reappear, fingers crossed they do it in a way that makes sense and is interesting.

Like most bad experiences, I have attempted to block Thor: The Dark World from my memory. So, is there any connection to wherever the Dark Elves live and their quest to spread darkness because darky dark, and Dormammu's dark realm?

Hah,that's true. But it was done much better/cleverer/more original here.

No connection. The Dark Elves wanted to return the Universe (specifically the Nine Realms) to darkness through the Aether. Dormammu wants to conquer every existing dimension of reality.

Yeah I agree with First Avenger.
If you look at season 2 of Agent Carter, they BEGAN the research of the Darkforce and it's continued into Agents of shield season 4 now and the Darkhold, an ancient book of Magic that connects to Ghost Riders Blaze, Ketch and now Reyes.

So do you guys think...

that Kaecilius could return as a human host for Dormammu? I know that Cumberbatch played him in the Dark Dimension, but as I'm sure we'll see him again, perhaps he'll take a different form on Earth. And if so, perhaps he'll use Kaecilius' body when he returns. I think that would be cool, since it would give us more Mads Mikkelsen.

Probably not. As others pointed out:
Kaecilius and the other Zealots were turned into Mindless ones at the end. I only wish we saw them joining a sea of Mindless Ones, but either way works.

Anyway, I liked how Dormammu was integrated and how he looked (it was different than a standard flaming head, but that's OK). I honestly didn't even expect him to feature in the movie (once again, the toys just straight up make things up since I was convinced that we'd see Shuma Gorath instead). I'll use spoiler code for two other big things I liked.

I like that The Ancient One drew on the power of the Dark Dimension. A lot of people don't realize that the first time Dormammu was mentioned in the comics was because Doctor Strange called on a spell by the power of the Dread Dormammu, much like he calls on spells by the Vishanti. People loved the name so much that they wrote to Stan Lee and asked for more about Dormammu. This felt like a callback to that to a degree.

I also like that Doctor Strange won through trickery and bargaining rather than through force. That always felt like the better way he won. In their first fight, it basically ended the same way, with a promise and nothing more holding him back.

The time loop and Dormammu killing Strange in various ways was definitely my favorite portion of the movie. So funny and so perfect in how he wins with that.

I absolutely loved Dormammu in this, how he was used for this first outing was brilliant & I thought the new look they gave him was excellent. I definitely want to see more of him going forward. There's so much to play with going forward.

I don't know much about him, so maybe someone can answer this for me...

Why were the bad guys able to break free of the reverse time spell, but Dormammu was unable to?

I liked the way he was handled and I was surprised to see him play as much of a role that he did. I hope Cumberbatch continues to voice him as well.
