With Fox showing clips galore of everything else, I truly wonder why Doom is being kept in the shadows? Is it because they want to keep him a surprise, are they proud of what is being done with him in this movie, or is it something else entirely?

Something else entirely: like, fanboys tearing apart that dumb Doom look.

Okay, if that is the case, if they truly hate Doom's new look, then why the hell did they greenlight it? They could have told Story and his crew that they need something else? It's just like why the hell Toho approved the American disaster known as Trizilla back when Devlin and Emmerich were making the American abomination known as Godzilla....Toho execs said "It is so different that it is like a complete and new Godzilla..." Well, we saw how that turned out (thank god they put that thing in Godzilla: Final Wars and had the REAL Godzilla kill him in like 2 seconds down in Sydney, Australia.)

As for Doom, Story says he's a fan and wants to make Doom the Doom we all know...they got rid of the Matrix trench coat look fromt he first movie and gave him his trademark cloak and hood...the mask from the first movie was an exact duplicate of Doom's comic book mask...the mask in ROTSS is different but it looks sinister....however, we really can't judge it for the pics have been blurred and bizarrely tinted...he has armor but its a chestplate....the arms are one of the more weird things they've done but until we see the finished product, we should hold off...for now. Doom has had many armored appearances over the years...so I just think of this as another one and if he acts like Doom, then we might actually have a memorable villain....

My only problem with the first Doom mask was that it needed a hinged jaw.

Perhaps.

But if that's the case then that's also a pretty blatant admission that they've dumped the source material again in favor of Hollywood pop confections. Some things--when updated and translated correctly--can even win over internet fanboys. Look at the reception of the Silver Surfer and the Fantasticar for example--from what I've seen comic fans think the concepts are awesome.

Dr. Doom is probably the biggest sorespot for many fans of the first film...he's the one character I think most people wanted "fixed" for the sequel--especially in terms of his motivations, characterization and especially his look. If they haven't rectified those problems there's gonna be a stink. I think they're skurred...LOL

But I'm gonna hold out hope that this is all gonna look better on screen, ESPECIALLY if Julian delivers with a stronger performance. If the writing, direction and acting is on point we may yet get the "REAL" Dr. Doom in spirit...even if he doesn't look anything like the character.

Well I would like it is official that after last night's trailer on "So You Want to Dance," that Fox has definitely decided to keep Doom "secret" and wait until June 15. The couple "glimpses" of his cloaked hood is all and most audience members (unless they've been fans or following this movie regardless) have no clue who that is suppose to be. Clever Fox, very clever....

Knowing how big of a Doom fan I am and I thought that it would kill me if I didn't see Doom before the movie but now, I want Fox to NOT show anything of him.

But I have to wonder what the deal is with that one clip from a couple of weeks ago on Smallville (I wish I had recorded that show!!). I don't think it has been shown anywhere since. Does this mean they are/were still making changes???

Well technically, its supposed to be bronze armor...I think that's like his 1st suit.

Doom in the first film, visual wise was very faithful to the early appearances of Doom like in issue #5 where he had a more medieval tunic like outfit. The mask was faithful and the outfit was plausible as he only just became Dr.Doom like 5 minutes before he battled the FF. I recall on these boards that people on the whole thought he looked faithful it was just the 'characterisation' that people hated.

'Marco, Polo' aside, I think the new glimpse of Doom has to be seen in context, I don't like the rubber looking arms but like the hood,cloak,mask and breastplate thing going on. Maybe they tried with the armoured arms, but they weighed Julain McMahon down or something. We'll have to wait and see more evidence to decide properly.

Either case, I'm not sure a 100% translation of Doom would work with a man in an armoured suit against 4 super-powered people...I know that doom's genius was involved to even the playing field, but I don't think an audience would by it. Remember, we are not the only people that these films are made for and a general audience couldn't care less.

Here's my best guess of what happened. They started with this:

Which many people here liked, but never looked quite right to me.

They mocked up some maquettes and maybe some prototypes. They decided the hood and cape looked better and "tougher" in a brown leather. They found that the joints in the armor didn't allow a good range of movement and decided good movement was more important than the look (possibly justifiable though I would prefer to find a better, rigid system). Since time and money was tight, the simplest thing to do to get better movement was to use rubber.

Agreedt:

I think the new look of Doom takes getting used to, but after having a couple of weeks to look at it, I think he should look great on the big screen. I mean he has the hood and cape, the gold chain links, the scary mask and what looks like the 'skirt' - all the main ingredients of Doom sans the armoured arms (can't see the legs) just mixed a little different.

I think it works to have an 'interpretation' of the comic look otherwise they might as well get a fan to make the suit or rent a costume shop version.
