Rise of the Silver Surfer DR. DOOM/Julian McMahon Discussion

Thank God.

THAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT is all.

I hope Dr. Doom is a threat this time around and we see the classic comic book almost Darth Vader like version of Doom .

Don't be hatin' on the bbq pit.

No one (who has seen the movie) has picked up on how close to classic Doom , movie Doom has now become as a result of this sequel.

I will put some points for consideration in spoiler tags for those who wish to remain cinematically pure:cwink:
  • Doom has the classic scarred and burmed (or melted) face behind the mask and even has an underling use tools to remove it who he kills because he's being impatient.
  • He sits on a big throne watching several spy cam screens of global events
  • You see images of his ancestors and a quick glimpse of one in armour which explains why he chooses to wear it
  • Doom in fiinal costume is totally armoured and looks so much closer to the more traditional Doom appearance
But most importantly and most overlooked

  • Doom now is FREE of the organic metal skin, so in essence with the exception of electrical powers, he is a man in a armoured costume...WOW!!! They have totally retconned Doom and got rid of the Ultimate FF controversy
  • So can we all call a truce with Fox, we now have to a degree a Doom (which at least in looks and now as a lightly powered human) is closer to 616 than ever?
This actually sounds good, Im glad that
We will get doom in full armor, and that we haven't seen the final suit yet

I just finished listening to the audio commentary on the Extended Edition last night, the one with Tim Story and Avi Arad and the screenwriters... and everybody agreed that they never liked that line and feel it was out of character. So why is it in there?

Strangely enough, the "Marco Polo" line is eliminated from the canadian theatrical cut. It works much better plus they gave him more a robotic voice, but with every pro there's a con. Alot of his dialog was cut and the ending is a little different as you can see:

Edit: Take that back. didn't watch the video carefully. he does say Maco Polo ><

Actually:

I think the final suit has been shown online quite a few times. The final suit, I dunno, after seeing the movie, I'm not used to it. It looked a bit too Halloween-y. I almost prefer his outfit in the first movie, but, we'll see what the general consensus is on it later.

Trust me, I just got back from the midnight showing and holy hannah....

The suit is freaking amazing and what he does once he gets the cosmic power is incredible.

Oh and Iron Maiden, I hope you are reading this cause guess what...one line of dialogue for me changed everything and I think you will also really appreciate it:

Then come and get it, Richards! (in a sinister snarl)

Doom may have not been the focus but for me, at long last, he was realized to be a major badass, a genius, etc.....

I'm so glad that more of you have FINALLY seen Doom now in this movie, and whilst still not perfect, he is far more faithful to 616 and actually feels threatening and imposing now. I only wish we could have seen more of him dressed iin his new costume.

Also, whilst he looks like the leaked production picture, the lighting was off and the picture not detailed enough to do his look justice, plus his arms and neck are not that green colour or rubber texture but are dark metallic grey with a metal sheen (but a bit like Batmans suit material).

Then come and get it, Richards! (in a sinister snarl)

YEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!

YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSS!

OH GOD YES!

HE SAID IT! HE SAID IT! ALL IS FORGIVEN!

Seriously. If Julian gets this delivery right then Marco Polo itself is forgiven.

  Ah, that sounds great!

By the way, I have seen some reviews that say he is a bit, shall we say, flamboyant . Would you say he come across as a lot more arrogant and he's not, as Kel called him "happy"?

To be honest, i can understand why more mainstream critics are saying that Doom or Julian Mcmahon's portrayl of the character is a bit "happy" or certainly camp as he seems catty and wants to upstage the FF, seems petty etc.

But to me this is how Doom acts for eg at one point he tells all the FF in a cool voice that 'he hates them' and he is working with them reluctantly. Another example is that he is doing his science stuff alongside Reed and he wants to upstage him. Comic Doom would be perceived as very camp in the mainstream and not as dark and menacing as most of us think.

He is VERY arrogant in this movie, but he is NOT the typical savage villain of todays movies or has a deep personal attchment to the heroes like in the Spidey films (someone who accidentally becomes a villian) - he's just ALL about Doom.

He is dangerous, but in keeping with the 60's spirit of Kirby-Lee and not the ultra violent, sadistic types of today (Well...he does needlessly kill).

Thanks for your input. I think there's a delicate balance to achieve there... you don't want him to be over the top like some early FF issues, yet he has to have this mix of being arrogant/imperious/erudite and sinister. Unfortunately for some, that equates to "gay" and I've seen a couple of the trade reviews allude to that. I am glad to read from quiet a few of the Hype that they like the performance a lot more this time out. I'll be going later on today.

In the first movie, my happiness comment came from line delivery, as in how he said the line.

THAT WAS NOT A PROBLEM FOR ME IN THE SECOND MOVIE. No, he's not full-on Doom. But Julian pulled off the villain, that I knew he could.......he just held on to the performance until the second movie....IMHO....:woot:

doom still sucked in this terribly kiddy sequel.

Indeed, we didn't really get to see Doom in this one either. His attitude is sometimes there, but it's ruined by some horrible lines. But Doom physically is never there. We only get to see a normal unscarred person with electric powers and a cosmic Doom on a surfer board. Where's the royal Doom in his trademark armour in all of the film? He's not even disfigured anymore (although I don't really know how that happened).

When Doom is hit with the power of the SS his molecules are flown out (as in the scene) and in coming back together was taken his normal self.

No, we didn't get monarch Doom, but we got a great villain, in my opinion.....and thats a hell of alot more than I can say for the first film.

I agree to a point. Doom here is a really good villain, but I think falls short of great.

Although, he kicks the crap FF1 Doom...hard.

Doom was the most impressive part of this film for me. I wish we got even more. But one thing that made me curious was... does he still have a metal body underneath his newly healed fleshy exterior? It's hard to say... at one point when his hands glow red after shooting out some electricity, it looks like there's something funky about his bones, so maybe? It would certainly explain why he's so cocky about Sue's questionable ability to explode his ass.

I thought one of the coolest Doom scenes in this film was when Victor came back and Thing shoved him against the wall lmao.:D:up:

He is cocky about that cause he is Doom. Doom does not fear Sue.

Hopefully now that the fixed some of the problems with him in the first, the third will have the Doom we all know and love.
