Hannibal Lecter TV Series in Development
Source: Gaumont September 12, 2011

French studio Guamont has announced the creation of Gaumont International Television (GIT), marking its foray into worldwide television production and distribution. Based in Los Angeles, GIT will be led by Katie O'Connell as CEO and Richard Frankie as COO.

A number of projects are already in development, including "Hannibal," a one-hour drama written by Bryan Fuller, and "Madame Tussaud," a six-hour mini-series from Michael Hirst.

O'Connell previously served as executive VP of drama programming for NBC Entertainment. Prior to that she was the executive VP of development and current programming for Imagine Entertainment. Frankie most recently was the executive VP of business operations at Sony Pictures Television. He also held senior level positions at Buena Vista Home Video and Universal Television. Working alongside O'Connell and Frankie is Erik Pack, based in London, who will head international distribution and co-production for the company. Pack previously served as executive VP of international sales and co-productions at Power.

"As we looked to expand our global presence in television it became clear that the next logical step was to launch Gaumont International Television. As a leading independent studio we are looking to build a company that is nimble, global and creative in this ever changing television landscape," commented Gaumont's CEO, Sidonie Dumas, and vice CEO, Christophe Riandee. "With Katie and Richard's background in the US television market, both from a creative and business perspective, and with Erik in London overseeing our distribution and co-production, and our French team, we feel we are well positioned to produce and offer top-quality entertainment that will succeed globally."

"Hannibal" will center on Lecter's early days, namely his time going head-to-head with FBI agent Will Graham. The back story between the two characters were alluded to in Thomas Harris' novel "Red Dragon" and the films Manhunter and Red Dragon.

Martha De Laurentiis (Hannibal Rising, Red Dragon) will produce the show.

I once tought about this too, i would have liked to see Hannibal's years before going to prison.
So this is going to be just a mini series huh?

I hope it airs on....Food Network.

If only the producer wasn't already attached to the two worst movies in the character's history.

Wait, what? Bryan Fuller?

Martha De Laurentiis. Even in the article her name is attached to those masterpieces Hannibal Rising and Red Dragon.

No yeah, I got what you meant. I just wonder how the **** they wrangled Fuller into this.

The fact that his name is attached to this at least gives us all some hope that the end product will be of some quality.

Or, more importantly, why?
His aesthetic worked well for Friday the 13th, and to limited success in Nightmare on Elm Street (the only saving feature of the film was Haley's performance, which was fantastic.) But, we do really need another retelling of "Red Dragon"? There have already been two adaptations of the important moments in the Lecter-Graham relationship...

That's Brad Fuller you're thinking of, not Bryan.

It might be an interesting concept though, if it focusses on the working relationship between Lecter and Graham when they were allies, solving crimes. Although a psychotic serial killer helping the police catch other killers will merit comparisons to Dexter, but if they keep Lecter's own crimes to a very select few, then that will help distinguish the two shows. Also, Graham is smarter than the entire police force on Dexter put together, so you'd have a more compelling "hero" character.

This has me interested. I just hope it comes out to the quality I'm hoping for. Now who to cast as Lector?

If this happens between the terrible Hannibal Rising and the better Red Dragon them i'm in

Aye, I've said this before when discussing the films, but instead of re-adapting 'Red Dragon', they should've got Thomas Harris to write an original screenplay for this period, the small pre-credits scene we got of that was the best part of the film.

Can't wait to see this.

I want you to know I enjoyed this.

Official policy: 'DENY EVERYTHING!' haha

back to the tv show, I hope the producers and directors can be honest about their approach, after all, there are folk in the business who have dodgy notions flaoting around in their heads that we never get to read, and they'll do anything to cover that up when it becomes apparent.
There's obviously more than one person in the biz who has had need of sorting himself out.

Mark A. Sheppard is a good choice, in terms of an actor who can come across as "Americanized pan-European," plus sophisticated-yet-creepy, and also realistically available for a TV show.

That he can pass for a young Brian Cox is an added bonus.

That's what it sounded like to me, the actually day to day process of how Will caught him, something that was only touched on briefly in Red Dragon.

I'm on the fence about the concept, but it has some serious potential.

I'd be willing to check it out if it happens. :) I am pretty forgiving when it comes to most things.

I have to wonder what network this would end up on. Showtime already has Dexter, so doing this would be a bit redundant, and HBO already has a buttload of projects in development. Doing this on a broadcast network would just seem wrong. As for the basic cable networks, AMC or FX are the only ones I can see making it work.

AMC and FX are both good choices. FX if they really want to be graphic, but I think Hannibal's terror is best when suggested rather than shown, so AMC would also work. It's not like there's going to be a lot of graphic sex between the two lead characters (I hope not, at least).
