Dr Strange has writers

Don't mean to sound like an *******, but Depp is a very obvious and uninspired choice. Though he'd do fine, it'd be hard for me to get excited over it.

If this is a Disney film (it has to be), Depp's chance to become Stephen Strange becomes better. And it's perhaps the only way to attract unassuming audiences.

Oh and a transvestite Wong of course.

I dont see why Dr. Strange's only way to attract audiences is to cast the most popular actor working.

Well then what are the other options?

Mind you, Sorcerer's Apprentice failed.

Sorcerer's Apprentice had "Nice Cage with funny hair" which is a big time internet meme and didnt know whether it wanted to market to kids or young adults. It was a mess from the beginning, and has little to do with Dr. Strange.

Over the last 5 years, it has pretty much proven that content and performers do not guarantee success anymore. Not even on average.

I have no doubt in my mind that the success of Dr. Strange will not be based on whether or not they cast Johnny Depp.

I'm not saying Strange is a shoe-in, but even a mildly interesting looking film with a capable performer has just about as much chance of being succesful than any given Depp film.

I think Dempsey would be a pretty fantastic Dr. Strange, he kind of looks like him and he does have some good acting chops if he'd stop getting typecast.

I'd be interested to see what Dempsey could do with the role. Strange is eccentric, yet still the only sane man at times.

"I don’t know if I’d necessarily do another show, a drama, that’s 24 episodes again," the "Grey's Anatomy" star explains, "HBO you’re at 13 and I think that’s much better. It’s just so hard to sustain the quality after three years if you’re doing 24, 25 episodes a year."

>Implying that 'Grey's Anatomy' ever had a quality to maintain

It's good to see someone like Dempsey lobbying for the role of Dr. Strange. I think it's better when actors want the part, especially when they could pull it off. If he wants it I saw give it to him. We already can see from his enthusiasm that he'll give 110%, so I say win-win.

I could've sworn Neil Gaiman had written a draft.

Dr. Strange is an exciting concept for a movie to me. If any character lends himself to a trippy, not-accessible and artsy superhero movie ala Hulk, it's Dr. Strange. I hope they make it as weird as the original Ditko comics were.

It would be neat, honestly, to do a non-action Marvel Superhero film; or at least one that wasn't styled to be a summer blockbuster. Something that was more story driven or character driven than action driven.

I wouldn't mind Depp in the role...but really, if they can find someone just as charasmatic it would still work...it all depends on how good the director is. If he can make it appealing to the general audience, but different enough that people don't think "sorcerer's apprentice" when they see the trailer.

I think Depp has expressed interest in another Marvel property: Namor.

Give Strange to someone else. Dempsey or some unknown that can pull it off.
This movie could be very good. Strange has some great villains and supporting cast. Hell, even his back-story is interesting. The recent animated movie was great. I think Marvel could make a live action film that's even better.

We could finally see Marvel put Shuma-Gorath to use in something other than the Capcom games. Honestly the dude has become a ****ing meme.

We went off-topic recently on the Avengers thread and started talking about Strange casting - someone posted the idea of David Tennant which seemed to go down quite well. I myself like the idea very much.

The posts are probably worth putting in this thread given the subject:-

I would love to see David Tennant have a stab at it. Also, I think Billy Crudup or Michael Fassbender could do a good job.

David Tennant is a nice out of the box choice for it

Yeah, I saw a pic of Tennant playing a magician in the Fright Night remake and it got me thinking.... I mean, he's already played one of the most famous Doctors of all time, and a magician, why not combine the two concepts?

LOL, I was so inspired by you guys' idea for David Tennant to play Doctor Strange that I wasted about two hours of my life making this fan teaser trailer.

TENNANT FOR STRANGE! Oh, and Andy Lau for Wong.

David Tennant would make an absolutely kick-ass Dr Strange.

How would Tennant not be a realistic choice if he'd be good for the role? I saw him in Hamlet. That dude is one mean bastard of a great actor.

I think David Tennant is just the kind of actor Marvel would cast as Doctor Strange. Chris Hemsworth's biggest role was on Home And Away for god sake.

Agreed. Tennant would be an interesting choice. Got the right intense look and gangly frame for the part. Slap a goatee and gray temples on him, and he'd be good to go....But aint we got enough brits playing the heroes? (we usually play all the villains so I aint complaining :cwink:).

Would be an interesting CV for the man....Biggest roles: Doctor Who, Doctor Strange...

You know, I supported the idea of Tennant for Strange before I saw him as Peter Vincent. Now I'm doubly convinced.

Yeah man, he would rock so hard as Strange. Ah man!

Oh wow. I was doubting this suggestion pretty hard but damn.

Cut the hair, gray the temples, and he'd be ideal. Well, put him in something a little more modest as well....:cwink:

Quite a change from Roddy McDowell aint it?

Woah never came to mind as Dr. Strange, could totally see Tennant.

Tennant is perfect for Strange and he already has a considerable following in fantasy/sci-fi fandom.

From Zak Penn to Donnelly & Oppenheimer.

Marvel sure knows how to pick 'em...

Dunno if that info is still current....the Donnelly & Oppenheimer article dates back to June 2010. Before, you know, their scripts for Dylan Dog and the Conan reboot crashed and burned.

Wish we could turn back time to '08, when Guillermo Del Toro was rumored to direct with Neil Gaiman scripting....what might have been... :csad:

Too many people fall in love with the concept of an "unknown" on these boards. Whether it's ignorance or disrespect to the business side of movie making I think it is a short sighted look at how to make a successful movie.

A character like Strange needs to be looked more like a concept than a property. He isn't Thor, or Iron Man, or Hulk, let alone Spider-man. The property won't sell itself.

I'm not saying you have to get Johnny Depp if this movie wants to have any chance, but there has to be someone that audiences can look at and be like "I've liked Patrick Dempsey (insert actors name) before, plus this looks really interesting=let's go see it"

I'd say PD or David Tennent is as unknown as you can get for Doctor Strange.

These writers suck and Clive Owen should be Dr. Strange.

Dempsey doesn't seem like a good fit for Strange to me.

you know it's coming. michael sheen for dr strange

He's an excellent actor. Wouldn't mind.
