Dracula Year Zero Rises at Universal

This project is doomed for fail IMO. Why doesn't Universal just do a new adaptation of the book as a quasi-remake of the original? They've remade The Mummy and The Wolfman and Del Toro is now working on Frankenstein, so a proper remake of Dracula seems like it would be appropriate. Instead we're getting some lame "year zero" crap that will only further dumb down the mythos.

DRACULA: YEAR ZERO; Filming Scheduled to Begin June 2011

Earlier today, Encore reported that Alex Proyas’ Dracula: Year Zero would be shooting early next year in Australia and that Worthington was attached to star. This was interesting news for two reasons. First, last we heard about Worthington and this project, his name was “under consideration” for the title role. Secondly, it didn’t seem likely that the project would shoot early next year since Worthington is scheduled to do Clash of the Titans 2 during that time.

We’ve now done some digging and discovered that Worthington is attached to play real-life historical figure Prince Vlad of Transylvania (pictured above, who may have been the inspiration for Bram Stoker’s Dracula) and that the plan is to shoot in June 2011. As a fan of Alex Proyas (Dark City, I Robot) I’m very excited to see his take on this supernatural thriller, especially with the movie most likely getting a large budget to work with.

Back in January, Steve spoke to producer Mike De Luca about the project and he revealed a lot of info. Hit the jump for what he said along with a list of Worthington’s other projects.

I do think that Worthington can pull off the look of Prince Vlad with the high hairline and bushy mustache. Also, at the end of the day, Prince Vlad was heavily involved in battle himself no? He should be played by someone who can be a convincing warrior on the field of battle, and I think Worthington can pull it off. I think people have to remember that this isn't going to be about some suave seducer, or some evil rake of a character. I'd say it's going to very much follow the format of the docu-drama from a few years ago where Rudolph Martin played Vlad, except this time a round they'll have someone in Worthington that can be made up to resemble Vlad more than Martin did.

So in sum, I'd say it'd be quite unfair to dimiss Worthington so quickly, he can work within this role.

Zach McGowan Joins "Dracula" Reboot

By Garth Franklin Thursday July 11th 2013 11:23PM
Zach McGowan ("Black Sails," "Shameless") has joined the cast of Gary Shore's revisionist take on "Dracula" at Universal Pictures.
The film blends true story and mythological elements to tell how a young Romanian prince (Luke Evans) takes on a bloodthirsty sultan and risks his soul to save his wife and child.
McGowan will play a gypsy chief in the film. Sarah Gadon and Dominic Cooper also star and shooting is about to begin in Europe ahead of a release next August.

Universal’s ‘Dracula: Year Zero’ Could Be First On Legendary’s To-Do List
By THE DEADLINE TEAM

Universal and its new co-production/co-finance partner Legendary Entertainment are in serious discussions about Thomas Tull’s company coming aboard Dracula: Year Zero, the origin pic that has Gary Shore aboard to direct and Luke Evans starring as the immortal bloodsucker from Bram Stoker’s iconic novel. It would be Legendary’s first project since the Batman-Hangover-Pacific Rim-Godzilla producer-financier inked a wide-ranging deal in July with NBCUniversal after leaving longtime home Warner Bros. Tull’s company made its name at Warners with big-budget genre fare, so Dracula seems a good fit. Universal has already set an August 8, 2014 release date for the bloodsucker pic so there’s little time to waste. Dominic Cooper and Zach McGowan star in the movie, which Matt Sazama and Burt Sharpless wrote and Michael De Luca and Alissa Phillips are producing. Variety first reported the talks. Before its current incarnation, the Dracula project was close to a production start with Sam Worthington starring and Alex Proyas directing, only to see Universal close the coffin because the budget was too high. Proyas eventually left to direct Paradise Lost, which had its plug pulled coincidentally by Legendary Pictures over high costs.

Luke Evans aka Dracula posted this selfie from the set.

Check out my abs, yo.

Oh and this chair, which has Dracula written on one side, and my name on the other side. Because I play Dracula. Ya dig?

Haha. It's the year of the shirtless selfie I guess. Everyone seems to be doing it.

The release date by the by, has been moved to October 2014 from August 2014.

I don't now if October is a good date for what is clearly being positioned as a tent pole film.

I had a feeling it would move to October. Makes a lot more sense to me than August. Now it's in the same month as Fox's Frankenstein as well.

Set photo. The location is absolutely spectacular.

This is still filming!

Might be reshoots or something. The movie is out in 4 months and is now getting an IMAX release too.

I am hoping that this is a prequel worthy of Bram Stoker's great story!

I would have expected some pics from this film by now, because as you say, it will be out in about four months.

And by the way, it is now titled Dracula Untold.

There has not even been a still out. Not a poster, not a trailer, not an article, not an interview, not any promo of any kind.

It wouldn't surprise me at all if this gets pushed.

This is usually happens to films which have such a lack of buzz or such silence surrounding them.

That's a badass poster. I like! The armor looks great.
