Kai is the only way to watch the show as far as I'm concerned. When I was a young teenager I was gladly willing to watch dozens of episodes of Goku training and charging attacks (then missing) but not now.

I'm going to watch Kai now. It's basically the same with filler edited out? No 16 episodes of powering up?

I still need to watch Kai. One day I'll get around to it, but now I'm getting the nerve up to watch Dragonball again the full way (Never got to watch King Piccolo arc). And I like Faulconers' music. Hate the term butt rock too, for anything. Never cared for the original music until DBZ Abridged.

DBZ Kai is a godsend. It is the purest you'll get to reading the manga. It does not linger or drag at all. It looks better. The dialogue is redone and with less silliness. It also uses the original Japanese soundtrack and is better than the Bruce Falconer soundtrack (though there were some great tracks). Goku vs Frieza doesn't last for 10 entire episodes. There is no dumb s*** like Android 18 shopping for clothes.

Yup. On episode 21, much Better and the new Frieza voice FAAAAAR superior.

I'm honestly kind of surprised at how strongly some people seem to feel about the original English dubs soundtrack. It's not bad or anything, but it's pretty generic, indistinguishable rock/sometimes borderline metal with a mixture of odd electronic based stuff here and there. It's not to say that the original JP's is some kind of standout to the usual orchestra score or anything, but it's overall better I would say, more appropriate and distinguishable.

I don't hate the English's dub, though. Like I said, I don't remember it hugely well, just always thought of it as rather disposable butt rock. Never thought it was such a defining thing of the show even back in the day to be honest. I might YouTube some of it, see what I think now. Maybe I'll have more appreciation for it or something.

Yeah. Final episode count after they finish the Buu saga is going to be like 151, I believe. So, it more or less cuts the show in half. The only thing I've missed so far is the training on King Kai's planet that I mentioned. Goku's inner monologue explains what the Kao Ken (sp?) but it feels like something that should've been explained when introduced. But that's minor and all, of course. The brisk pace of it is great for a brush up, definitely.

Oh, so it is different? I thought it was.

Still sounds like a an old woman with esophageal cancer :o

I kind of hate Kai. Gave it a shot and wasn't feeling it.

Say what you want about the buttrock/Falcouner music but I can't fathom how there are people on net who say Kai sucks because they loved the filler. Like as a legitimate reason. "The lack of filler created pacing issues" or "I like that Goku vs Frieza was 4 hours long. You must have a short attention span."

I wish I could slap these people. That is when nostalgia goes too far.

The filler can be frustrating but the old series still has value in my opinion. I like (most of) the voice work in the original Funimation dub more than Kai. Gohan especially has an annoying voice in Kai.

I have all of Dragon Ball, all of Z (The Dragon Boxes and the Rock the Dragon set, not the lame cropped orange bricks) all of Kai, all of GT, and all the movies/specials/OVAs on DVD or Blu Ray.

Kai is like a greatest hits album in my opinion.

Yeah, pretty much. The only filler that I felt was worth much really was the Other World Tournament. Good concept, fleshed out the DBZ world. Basically filler done right when you absolutely most do filler. But it's the exception, the big exception in this case.

I thought Kai had most of the original English dub VOs?

Personally, I thought Falcouner's music made certain scenes stand out so much more than the Japanese dub ever did. That's what makes watching Kai somewhat painful for me. I really can't get into the music at all. It kinda pulls me out of the experience. I hope Super has a much better soundtrack now that we're in 2015 and not the 80's - early 90's.

On YouTube, there is a clip of Battle of Gods with the Falcouner music added in. It just makes Vegeta's "That's my Bulma!" moment all the more awesome. His music just fit the series so well in my opinion.

Some of the Kai voices I also don't care for, but I grew up with 90's dub and I'll admit I have a bias for the voices. With that said, I'm particularly not a fan of the new Kid Gohan, but the New Frieza is actually well done to me.

Some of the filler I liked was the Ginyu Force vs Tien, Yamcha, and Chiaotzu; the Otherworld Tournament, Goku falling into Hell, Gregory (a filler character they kept in Kai), early appearances in DB by the Pilaf gang, etc.

Yeah, a lot of people online feel this way. I never would've suspected that people were so attached to that. It never really occurred to me that it was anything special. Different strokes and all.

But I think you'll be disappointed, though. Orchestrated scores are still a pretty standard thing for anime as far as I know, and since they didn't get Falconer for the new films I really don't think they will for Super's dub, either. Companies in general are a lot more picky about authenticity nowadays, I kind of doubt anything like that will happen again.

It's been awhile, but for the most part, they all seem about the same to me. Frieza I could tell sounded differently, though I could easily see it being the same VO toning herself down or something.

I might give Kai a chance and I may like it, but I'll always love the original funimation dub more no matter what. Got a special place in my heart zone.

Battle of the Gods at least, had a different soundtrack beyond the simple Kai orchestra sound. I actually liked it a lot and hope they stick with this type rather than what they've been doing with Kai/Japanese Z.

What did you dislike about it?

Mainly the music and character edits for sake of being PC. I have no issues with the filler or long times it takes to get anywhere for the standard version, but all in all I'm too used to (and prefer) watching the subbed unedited Japanese episodes.

What's this in reference to?

I think he's referring to Mr Popo and how they changed his skin color

No.

Okay, so I had to google this, because I literally watched the Kai episodes with Popo before Namek yesterday, and he was still the same as the original.

Popo is only Blue in the TV edited version from 4Kids seen on Nicktoons and Toonzai. In the actual, unedited DVD/Blu-ray releases he's still the same. I can understand the change, though.

I see. I've only seen a few random episodes of Kai, granted they were on Saturday mornings. I do intend to watch Kai straight through now, though.
