Isn't he still Mystic in the new show?

Yes and no...same with the films. He has been shown going SS for the SSG ritual, and went SS2 in Resurrection F. Some people have been saying he has lost his Mystic ability, but there hasn't been an answer to that.

I assume he can't since he does **** all really. He needs to work out more. I still find it funny that way back when SS was the be all and end all for power and within a few years it was **** all.

In Battle of the Gods Gohan did a Mystic power up, but then in RoF he just went SSJ during the big fight scene. I don't think he could ever lose his ability to go SSJ2. But the Mystic power up worked by unlocking potential. By the time of RoF he had been completely slacking off and barely trained at all, so I think his current potential has dropped back down and his SSJ transformation makes him as powerful as he can be, hence no Mystic. After all, when they all met for the World Martial Arts Tournament in the Buu saga, his SSJ2 power level was actually weaker than when he fought Cell due to lack of training.

I feel Goku and Gohan are both well rounded. It's just that the story doesn't always do a good job of presenting it.

Vegeta has ended up becoming both a good fighter and a good father over time, so I don't think that's the message at all.

You're looking at it a bit obtusely really. Goku has, since the beginning of the original DB, been obsessed with fighting, adventure and improvement. Him being kind of a horrible father by being obsessed with training and bettering his skills makes sense to his character since that's his drive in life. Gohan was never like that, he simply got caught up in everything due to his father's involvement. He never really had this drive to be the best he could he be, and a lot of his power came from natural untapped potential that he had no real control of. I don't think it's really hard to see him not being as obsessive about training and focusing on another part of his life during peace time.

To be fair the actual movie was pretty boring and they can only work with what they have. I found this version much better. Having a run time of half also improved it quite a bit.
