How's his english? If he has that asian accent, I don't want him anywhere near Goku.

edit: He played Ryu in Street Fighter Legacy, which was pretty awesome.

When he speaks normally you can catch his accent, but his portrayal as Jin he speaks with no accent.

But we got the s****test white actor to play Goku... I am not a purist just give credit where credit is due...so aliens have to be white stop enough with the bull...If that's the case make him Black since he fictional...I'm sick of Asian people being cast in the supporting roles in movies where they should be the main character.

DBE would of sucked no matter who played goku the director and studio had no passion or vision for the movie and a horrible script

I've watched every Dragonball series, what I loved about season one is Goku was never in high school or school period for that matter, Roshi was a bald old man, Yamcha wasn't some surfer bandit hybrid jackass, and Piccolo wasn't an armored one dimensional villain with little to no backstory. DBE managed to mangle every aspect of Dragonball and somehow you find that acceptable?!?!?!
It was more relate-able with Goku as a teen than him as a five year old kid. Seriously, the film would've been worse if he was depicted as a five year old. Roshi was fine, bald or not. Yamcha's character in the film was also fine. And yes he was a desert Bandit when he was introduced. Piccolo's backstory was obviously going to be omitted. Look at the amount of source material they had! It was so much!!!!!!!!!

Okay he would be pretty awesome (look wise) for goku...the question is can he act. I always thought the Sayins looked somewhat racially ambiguous. I couldn't really tell if they were white or asian...so maybe someone who is half of both would work well. But first Im more concerned about getting a capable actor.

Movie 1-Red Ribbon Army saga merged with the Piccolo Daimo saga
Movie 2-Saiyan Saga
Movie 3-Frieza
this is how i always envisioned a DB trilogy. kudos!

Of course the influences are Asian. But Saiyans aren't Asian. If they hire Asians for a role like Yamcha or Master Roshi it makes sense. But to me it doesn't matter whether the Saiyans are cast as White because they aren't from Earth. It's liking saying Piccolo has to be Asian as well.
i view Saiyans the way i view humans....they can be white, black, brown, or tan. however, i firmly believe that Vegeta and ESPECIALLY Goku are supposed to have the appearance of an Asian. Akira Toriyama originally intended on giving ALL Saiyans black hair and the original DB manga was geared towards an Asian audience (hence the Asian influenced main character). on top of that, Goku is probably Asia's most well known superhero so it's a bit disrespectful to many fans to see a white actor play what is widely accepted to be the Asian version of Superman.

as for Piccolo...don't be dumb, he's obviously meant to be played by a black guy! *that was a joke*

I wouldn't put too much weight into that. There have been many manga set in the real world in very non-Japanese settings as well. There are also manga set in Japan where the protagonist is explicitly said to be White while the rest of the supporting cast are Asian. Therefore, the primarily Asian demographic does not necessarily preclude the main character from being of non-Asian ethnicity.

of course not...you're you.

understood and acknowledged, but those manga aren't DB.

no but i can guarantee you that Asia has more Asian heroes than it does Caucasian or African. yes, they have a few manga/anime here and there where the main character is specifically white or black, but the majority either has a character that CAN be Asian or flat out IS Asian. also, i never said that Goku IS Asian, nor is my opinion the end-all, be-all. however, i DID state that everything about Goku is practically Asian aside from the fact that the creator never gave him an Earth ethnicity (white, black, hispanic, asian, etc.) so therefor, many (i'd argue most) fans feel that Goku look should REFLECT (rather than contrast) the kind of culture that gave birth to him in the first place.

you wouldn't make a comic character who has blonde hair, blue eyes, and leads his life based on European culture only to have him played by a Japanese man. even IF they never stated his Earth ethnicity, you would expect a white man to play that role........so why is it SOOOOOOOO damn hard for some people to understand why DB fans would like to see an Asian play the role of a character that is HEAVILY Asian based???

Considering your view on casting Piccolo have you been watching these videos?:awesome: http://www.youtube.com/user/WeeklyTubeShow2

With DB having a very Asian influence, I'm gonna assume Goku resembles an Asian as well as the other characters. The director plus Hollywood chose to make him caucasian so that he would appeal to a broader audience just like with any other hero/heroes from Japan. Just look at what they switched in the past

Kamen Rider/ Masked Rider - was Japanese originally, switched to American
Power Rangers
Gridman/ Superhuman Samurai
Beetle borg
Ultraman
Metal Heroes

i honestly think they just shelled out a crap movie with a crappy budget to avoid losing the rights to it. Fox has done this in the past with their first FF movie. i doubt theyll ever make anything with it, but their viewpoint is prolly that theyd rather not give it up and let someone else profit with it so they might as well keep it caged up.

It's hard to say what exactly what proportion of fans want what since we can't do an individual count of the 'millions' of fans across the world or even just in Asia. It's easy to think that most people are of the view that Goku must be Asian based on what's being said online. However, it's worth pointing out that it's those with strong views (particularly when they are trying to change something) are the ones most likely to voice themselves. Meanwhile, those who are content or hold no particular preference are more likely to remain silent. Also, it should be pointed out that DB:E, despite its shortcomings did fairly well in Japan. This shows that there are evidently a fair number of fans there who were willing to overlook the race change. Now, I'm not saying that Goku has to be White either. What I'm getting at is that for a good number, it's probably a non-issue; especially since it's American-made and in English. If people wanted it as close a translation as possible, shouldn't they expect it to be in Japanese as well?

Also, with regards to Dragon Ball's cultural significance, it is true that it is big and well recognised. However, it should be pointed out that there have been many anime and manga out in Japan before DB came about. The reason it has such a significant role in the West is because it was one of the first anime to be widely available State-side. However, in Japan, there are other franchises that have held a bigger impact over there despite lower levels of popularity overseas. Take for instance, the character Doraemon, who is officially recognised as a cultural ambassador for Japan. And then, there's Gundam...

There may have been a fair amount of people that had watched DBE in Japan, but I know they weren't pleased with the end result.

I think if any anime need to be made to live action, DBZ should be one of the last. There are alot easier, more straightforward anime to do... try some Gundams first.

Except that was 10 years ago. With the effects of Transformers, and an awesome director (keep Bay the hell away) it'd be a different story.

http://www.slashfilm.com/2010/05/12/details-emerge-about-gaiking-movie/

i duno what Gaiking is, but it looks like gundam a bit with manpiloted robots. either way, these types of movies, although look cool, just end up reminding me of Powerrangers and their zords

Gaiking came out around the late 70's early 80's. I remember when the cartoon was part of the Force Five, he was basically a giant robot that was part of a ship called the Space Dragon. As with any other giant robot, alien invaders come, Gaiking is formed, kicks their ass. The show was pretty good IMO, and if I remember correctly, it was only piloted by one person.
