What? How hard was it to understand? I think the clue that Goku wasn't gonna just be written off was the fact that he was in every episode after the fight with Raditz... and the fact that it was agreed he was gonna be revived. You're acting like Piccolo dies for Gohan during the first episode... there was plenty of time for their bond to develop as they trained.
With Piccolo's death there's more going on than just his bonding with Gohan during their training. Piccolo was the Demon King an incorruptible evil that plagued the earth for years. He was also responsible for the deaths of a couple of our heroes.
Piccolo is also linked to Kami-sama, the God of the Earth. So when he sacrifices himself to save this young boy, the son of his arch enemy, he is also sacrificing God's life. He also does this knowing that neither he nor any of the others who died would be able to come back to life. Kami even admits that he had redeemed himself and had surpassed even him. When you think of it like this I thnk it has more impact than just "The green guy who loves Gohan."
And like I said before, when the show starts with the arrival of the saiyans, it assumes we already know about Goku's accomplishments and his power. We should be amazed that the Goku and Piccolo team happened. We should be shocked that Goku died, you'd think he was the one character who wouldn't die.
And again they hardly talked about the Dragon Balls themselves or where they came from, the dieties and mythology surrounding them.
