So you have no empathy for Asian-Americans when it comes to the appropriation of their culture and lack of representation.
It is not appropriation of their culture. Being an American whose forefathers are Japanese is not the same as being Japanese. That is before we get into how ridiculous the idea of appropriation is. I wasn't allowed to dress up as Goku for Halloween because I was a Hispanic American? :funny:

So now cybernetics counts as appropriation of Asian culture? Whoever created these characters should feel ashamed.

Asian culture is part of the Asian-American experience.

This is a fundamental part of being multicultural.

No, it is the culture that Asian Americans cultivate here that is the multiculturalism. It is exactly why you randomly dismiss how the Japanese feel about these movies. Namely, they are okay with it. Quite like the idea of Scarlett being the Major.

I don't want to get to deep in this debate, but throwing around the term Asian-American is in my opinion in this context borderline absurd. Its like using the term European American to describe Italy, Ireland, and Russia all at the same time. Its grossly misleading. Japan is Japan and Japanese culture is Japanese. If there is any appropriation going on its by people throwing the whole continent into a simple label that is misleading and misdirecting.

If the term Asian-American was really honest it would include the Middle East, Christianity, Judaism, Islam, etc. Yet when was the last time anyone said anything about Jesus and Christianity being appropriated?

To be more accurate I would focus on Japan and stay with Japan in this debate. They are not like the rest of Asia and if you are familiar at all with their culture, you might be surprised to find they would be more offended by someone from China playing the Major than a Caucasian.

On a side note, Caucasians are from the Caucasus, which is also in Asia. :D

I'm not randomly dismissing their view, I already gave you a reason why I side with Japanese-Americans on this subject. Japanese people live in a homogeneous country where every single piece of midea produced is catered to them. They don't have to deal lack of representation. Asian-Americans don't have that privilege.

The flaw is the idea that these films must cater to specific cultures and races. I didn't need Oscar Issac in Star Wars for it to cater to me. It did because I loved the movie. As an American, I get to enjoy what I want to enjoy. That is the awesome thing about being an American.

So you don't believe representation matters?

The people who are underrepresented.
Is not the problem of an American adaptation of a foreign manga and movie. Especially as you are willing to change the race of Danny Rand just because he is white. And with that, I am done. I am sure everyone else is very happy about that. :funny:

If they adapted Arise as live action in the future, I could see Cara Delevingne playing the Major or Captain, Lieutenant, etc since it would be a prequel. She has a similar semi angry appearance with her brow as does Kusangi in Arise. At the same time she is also physically far more like the prosthetic body the Major uses in Arise. Any thoughts?

No empathy whatsoever. Okay.

One other idea that might be interesting would be to use a fully CGI character one day in a film. Make it look mostly human but keep just a hint of uncanny valley, especially the skin and eyes. Could even do the same with Batou since he has a full body prosthetic like the Major.

If they could do that, but at the same time retain the clothes, weapons, etc. as real it could be very interesting. Maybe throw a person into a green screen suit wearing actual clothes with motion capture points on their face?

as someone who has only seen the 95 anime
would any GITS fans here recommend the other adaptations ?

Highly highly recommend Stand Alone Complex, both seasons. Watch the TV episodes and avoid the two films they edited from the episodes. The TV series has fantastic English voice acting and is full of depth that is missing from the edited film versions. The only real SAC film is Solid State Society, which is also really good.

Some other pretty cool adaptions are the PS1 game directly based on the Manga and the PS2 game which takes place in Stand Alone Complex, between seasons. The PS1 adaption is good enough to watch on Youtube, has over 12 minutes of high quality animation from Production IG, the animation studio behind SAC.

Lastly, the VR short film that is from the Arise adaption is pretty well made and an interesting take on the material.

The original manga is pretty cool.

Much more light hearted but still clever.

They're all collected in a single graphic novel called Ghost in the Shell vol. 1 for 22 bucks on Amazon.
