The only one I haven't seen yet is the "New Movie".

Is that the one that followed Arise?

Innocence came out in 2004. Solid State Society, which is basically a DTV movie and the finale of Stand Alone Complex came out in 2006. Arise debuted in 2013. I don't think there's been any new animation since.

I thought so but was a little confused.

Gonna rewatch all the GITS movies and series before the live action comes out so I'll need to pick that one up.

Ghost in the Shell - Anime vs. Movie Trailer Comparison

Interesting thing is, Major in anime does not look asian at all. :woot: So I don't get the complains that she's not played by an asain actress.

Scarlett actually looks a lot like her.

I'm getting really tired of hearing how anime characters don't look Asian thing. It's a tiresome argument and excuse.

Excuse for what? The film was attacked due to white-washing of the main character, who actually does not look asian. To me it's kinda strange.

If you want to see a not well known animation done by Production IG, the same guys who would later do Stand Alone Complex, that stays faithful to the Manga and takes place in the same world as the Manga behold...

So Naruto doesn't have the Nordic features of blue eyes and blonde hair?

That's not just a random color choice, stop lying to yourself.

I'm not saying all anime characters look white but even the Japanese admit that many anime characters look white.

Now that's the Ghost in the Shell I fell in love with.

Thanks for posting this.

But it'll get the "no diversity" complaints all the same in all likelihood. Race-change someone like Mary Jane = "So progressive, a character's race shouldn't matter!", race-change Major = "Oh my God, being Asian is ESSENTIAL to the character, they're white-washing everything!".

Exactly. Funny how the same people having a hissy fit over white-washing in GITS (which as far as I'm concerned is bs because the character doesn't even look Asian in the anime) is the same people advocating for Idris Elba to be the next James Bond. So as long as you're not white, race-changing is OK. Where I come from excluding a specific race of people from something based on the color of their skin is called racism.

Damn, I loved this game. They really captured the feel of the manga. And animation is absolutely insane in cutscenes.

People see this as acceptable because there are tons of White actors/characters/representation in Hollywood and media while there are still very few minority ones. So changing a White character isn't seen as bad or detrimental as changing a minority one of which there are already little roles, representation or visibility of. Also, White actors portraying characters of color has been a thing throughout history which is something that is taken into account as well.

Also this usually goes both ways. I've seen some people get angry when a White character is cast as Black, Asian, Latino etc but are fine when a minority character is cast as White.

I think Motoko looks Asian in Arise, but in the original anime, she doesn't. Aramaki and Director Nakamura look Asian. Motoko, Batou, and Togusa don't. (At least, not in the 1995 anime)

i whole heartily agree

i guess they have to have stereotypical slanted eyes for people to think they are asian

many people still claim goku also isn't asian even tho he is basically called the asian superman lol

I replaced the Depeche Mode cue used in the official GITS trailer with music from Kenji Kawai's Innocence OST:

So what? There are also characters with naturally pink and blue hair.

But you're right, Naruto's hair color probably wasn't a random choice. Kishimoto most likely made Naruto blond to emphasize his troublemaking personality given that in Japan blond hair is associated with delinquency.

I'm not lying to myself at all. The characters in Naruto looking the way they do is a stylistic and artistic choice. Additionally, Naruto is not set in the "real world." It's set in an alternate Ninja world with different continents and geography than ours. Maybe Konohagakure is like an alternate version of Asia.

People are excusing white washing here by justifying, "well the characters in anime look like white anglo people." Well no. Characters in anime look the way they do because of a particular style or art choice. You say they look nordic, then how does Sakura, who's hair is naturally colored pink look then? What nationality of people have naturally pink colored hair?

OK, so in the anime, Ghost in the Shell which is set in Asia, or Japan or a fictional Asian city, you have Japanese characters. But Motoko Kusanagi is a cyborg. So that means her cyborg shell could look like a white person, even though she's actually Asian. Well if her cyborg shell could look like anyone, it could just as well take on the appearance of an Asian version as well.

The way anime looks visually, claiming characters look white or Anglicized is not a good excuse. It doesn't fly at all.

This isn't the Naruto movie. If and when a Hollywood Naruto movie happens, then we can delve deeper into that conversation.

And yes, as Thorson pointed out, bleached or colored hair is often associated with juvenile delinquency in Japan. It's something delinquents do over there.

For every anime with undoubtable Asian characters there are dozens with Eurocentric characters.

Batou looks as Scandinavian as Dolph Lundgren.

Pilou Asbæk looks great as Batou. Class actor too. Check out "A Hijacking" and "A War".

He was also in " Lucy" with Scarlett as the dude who persuaded her to go into the hotel with the briefcase at the start.

Here is the thing. Whatever art design or choices people make, it is clearly all about the eye of the beholder. Especially when voice acting is a choice most of the time. I am not white, but growing up watching anime, someone like Goku looked white to me, while Krillin and Master Roshi looked Asian to me. I guess my default view point was these characters were "white" and thus Krillin and Roshi looking distinct different made me view the majority of the others as also not Asian. That it was set in a mystical world helped that probably.

It was the same with Cowboy Bebop, where I thought Spike, Faye and Edward were white, while Jet was black. On the flip side, I saw everyone on Samurai Champloo as Japanese, even with vastly different designs from the three main characters.

If people in Japan see the majority of the Full Metal Alchemist characters as Japanese, who am I to say they are wrong? We just see these things differently.

If you wanna go way back, the original anime style in Japan was inspired by Betty Boop.

I think they could easily change the actress who's playing the Major. They could use it to their advantage and create a whole series of films. Just change Motokos Shell.
