The Iron Fist situation is one in a long Hollywood tradition that revolves around taking east asian culture, really any culture viewed as exsotic by western standards, and putting a white guy as the center of it. Like I said it's not the same as this but related none the less.
You mean a pair of male white comic book creators influenced by a variety of Asian martial arts cultures, made a story about white male influenced by Asian martial arts culture!?!

If you have an actual problem with this, you wouldn't want an Iron Fist show. You wouldn't be in favor of changing the source material.

You keep pushing this idea that these two situations are the same but they aren't. There are tons and tons of roles for white people in Hollywood, they're literally never going to run out of roles for white people ever. Minorities don't have that same luxury, there are limited roles being written specifically for minorities and minority characters. That forces higher than normal competition and shuts out talent who would have otherwise been given roles if they were white.

So no, changing a white character and casting a minority actor in the role IS NOT the same as whitewashing a minority character. With whitewashing, you're already reducing the chances from an already slim pool. For every one white character that's changed or played by a minority character, you're going to have a ton more white roles pop-up in it's place. That's not happening on the flip side with minorities in the industry.

It's the same thing. Completely the same. Fictional characters getting race swapped when being brought to the big screen.

When you're in the Thor forums complaining how Valkyrie should be a white, blonde hair blue eyed woman and how this Thompson girl is wrong for the role, then you have a foot to stand with this Scarlett Johansson is wrong for this role.

The fact that they tried making Scarlett "look asian" through CGI is frankly, embarassing (modern yellowface), and I don't understand why a succesful female led action movie is supposed to make people happy about the way they're handling this.

Scarlett Johansson is filthy rich, let's not pretend she needed this role.
What does this have to do with anything exactly?

IT IS NOT THE SAME! You are working under the assumption that minorities and white actors are both on an even playing field and are being offered the exact same amount of roles. They are not!

We have, and still do have, actors of color like Viola Davis, Constance Wu, Gina Rodriguez and many more telling you repeatedly for years that they are not being offered the same amount or same types of roles as white actors and yet you still think they are. :whatever:
I have no assumption about playing fields. I have never said the same offers were there for minorities. You continue to change the argument.

The points are simple:

1. Crying about the source material while being find with changing the race of white characters is an obvious contradiction. It has nothing to do with the source material, so you can't use it as an argument here.

2. This movie was never getting made without an actress who the studio thought they could bank on. Scarjo is the reason this is being made. There is no opportunity for an Asian actress, as there is no movie without this specific actress. Heck, most are still shock this got out of development hell. So it is false argument that this role was "stolen".

3. This is an American production. If you want to complain, go to those who sold the rights to an American company in the first place.

Are they changing their appearance for the movie? Clearly not.

Back to the topic. I wonder will Major, ScarletJo wear anything similar to her anime counterpart. If she does...boy we will see feminists on this thread also

That particular aspect of the source material is where the problem stems from so yes I would be in favor of it being changed.

There are plenty of Japanese films/plays (Les Miserables for instance) that keep the original story but are all done by Japanese actors. Why is no one in an uproar over that?

You mean the core of the source material? :funny:

Source for this?

I don't know I don't live in Japan. But I do know that Japan is nowhere near as culturally diverse as the US. That may have something to do with it.

I thought Super T did a nice job explaining this so I'm not sure how you still don't get it smh.

Understanding the paradox of the argument isn't a problem for those reading it. It is those saying it, as they continually contradict themselves.

Weren't you the one loving the Tiger Lilly whitewashing because Rooney Mara is pretty? lol

You could change Danny Rand into an Asian-American and all the core elements would still be there. Don't even try the ******** "But if he's asian then he won't be an outsider" argument. Ask any Asian-American born and raised in the US and they'll tell you what a culture shock it can be when actually going to their parents, grandparents, or ancestors country of origin.

Oh, I like an actress. The horror. :funny:

It is amazing how often those making these arguments avoid the point. Especially as they encourage a racially charged argument, and justify it just because we are talking about white people. As Bill Maher put it, it is okay to attack people, as long they aren't considered a protected people.

No, using the argument here, if he is Asian-American, he can't be Danny Rand, because that is the wrong race. :cwink:

Sorry, what's the point? I thought the point was increasing minority talent behind and in front of the camera, and Hollywood's missed opportunity to do so in adapting this non-western franchise. In other properties, race-swapping or gender-bending are one strategy to ensure that minority or female characters actually exist in main roles.

Nope, because Super T keeps contradicting himself and is coming off as a bit of a racist towards whites.

PERFECT casting in my opinion! I'm super excited for this!

The point for who? Because this isn't our money.

As to the point of changing the race, the argument here is based around source material. If the source material is other examples, you can't change the argument here because we are suddenly talking about another race because it clearly changes the argument.
