Wow I must have been out of the loop because I had know idea that Japan did a live stage play version of Ghost in the Shell:

With Kaede Aono as Motoko

If only we had someone like that as Motoko in this adaptation being done

If they keep the Japanese names and have it take place in Asia but use white actors, then it's different. And tacky, in a The Last Airbender kind of way (even that is less worse because it doesn't take place In our world)

We don't know if that's the case yet however but it would be stupid.

I don't really get the controversy, Hollywood had make several foreign movies remakes without people complaining, how is that different ? "Americans" could have just dubbed these movies right ? On top of my head, True Lies is the US remake of a French movie but it bothered no one and it was a completely different movie in tone.
AFAIC it's the same thing, as long as the movie is good, I don't mind, I just want to be fooled ( to quote The Prestige ).

It's not the same thing.

if you say so.
It is. The only difference is there are some fanboys of GITS who are beyond reasoning with.

Her eyes look amazing!!!

Just like the 1995 Anime Motoko. :ilv:

Race issues aside.

Could we get back to the most important question.

Will Scarjo get naked at some point?

Lol, seems unlikely, actress's only do that for "art" films and if there is a sniff of an Oscar involved.

She's been there done it. I can't see it happening in this, unless it's a behind shot or something covering her up.

I believe that was a body double and/or CGI so it wasn't actually her body you saw.

Rila Fukushima Joins 'Ghost in the Shell
rila-fukushima.jpg

Rila Fukushima has joined Scarlett Johansson in DreamWorks' Ghost in the Shell.

Based on the popular Manga of the same name, the movie follows Kusanagi, a cyborg that is a part of an elite cybercrime-fighting task force known as Section 9.

Snow White and the Huntsman helmer Rupert Sanders will direct the feature from a script written by Jonathan Herman and Jamie Moss.

Ghost in the Shell, which will be distributed by Paramount, was widely accused of whitewashing after Johansson and other white actors were cast as the traditionally Japanese characters.

The Tokyo-born Fukushima joins a cast that also includes Michael Pitt and Juliette Binoche.

To American audiences, she is known for playing the female ninja Yukio in the 2013 Wolverine opposite Hugh Jackman. Keeping in the superhero vein, she took on the role of Katana on The CW's Arrow.

I wonder who is she playing. Usually there is Major Kusanagi and rest of Section 9 is male oriented. My first guess would be prime minister yoko kayabuki.

'' you see? they are not racist. this is not a 100% white cast. next time wait until the movie is out before complaining''

This is sorta late in the shoot, so I get the vibes of this casting as a response to the backlash. It's almost on the nose.

But more of Rila is a good thing!

My brother told me last night that they are making a FMA film, with a Japanese cast. Where is the outrage? :hehe:

Maybe we'll have more Asian actors in the new Blade Runner sequel. Besides a few Latinos and a Greek/Filipino (Bautista), there's no mention of any Asian actors, despite the film taking place in a post-Asiany dystopian.

To be fair, it is a Japanese production, not a Hollywood production. We may get a limited release like Attack on Titan or the DBZ movies.

Is Ghost in the Shell not an American production?
