Awesome news about Rila, loved her in The Wolverine, imagine her character will be vastly different in this but its a positive for me at least.

It's an American film that probably is a co-produciton from a Japanese company. But it's being funded by the Americans.

I'm guessing they're going to "Starbuck" one or two of the supporting cop roles, like Saito the sniper for instance, to make more roles for women. No problem with that, IMO.

I like Rila quite a bit but tokenism isn't going to save this movie from its PR problem.

I noticed she has a stunt double for the movie FWIW (stuntguildnz.com -> Rosalie Van Horik).

new set pictures
The Major and Batou. :D

Bit of a shame they haven't done anything with Bato's eyes but it seems like much will be changed from the manga anyway. Set pictures are not the best to judge though and can be somewhat different in the final thing.

I like how Batou looks. The Major looks like Bjork though. :o

Don't let her stans hear you say that. :ninja:

Niiiiiiice. Pic where they stand together - Major and Bato - really anime brought to life.

I guess, Bato will get his eyes augumented during the course of the film.

Or maybe they will augment his eyes in post-production

Possible.

Still, looks amazing. This film slowly turns into my most anticipated film of 2017.

or maybe it wont be as pronounced as the anime and just be regular eyes

that sci fi movie doomsday starring rhona mitra had the her character with augmented eyes

They really want to capture aesthetics of the first film. So I doubt they will be messing with the source that much.

Scarlett look pretty good as The Major in those pictures. Yes, I know she doesn't look Asian. The major didn't look Asian in the anime, either.

Batou looks alright. He doesn't look big enough. He definitely needs the prosthetic eyes, too.

As a fan of the original, I'm pretty sure I'll at least watch this on Blu-ray. Not sure about the theater.

If you look the way ScarJo looks then cool but Motoko in the original movie adaptation looked very much Asian.

Hell Rinko Kikuchi and Kaede Aono from the Broadway adaptation look more like her.

Kaede Aono as Motoko:

She doesn't look Asian in the first film. If someone wants to blame someone, blame Japanese animators. In Innocence dolls look completely Asian.

Not Asian ('95):

She looks Asian in both of those to me.

Can we at least have her speak Japanese at some point? Also I wonder if this movie will make that teased but never officially confirmed romance/sexual tension between Batou and the Major, flat-out canon?

In Oshii's movies it was very much one way.

True, but on the shows/sequel film it seemed more mutual. I'm not sure if they're just going with the films here, or if they'll be pulling bits and pieces from all of the continuities?

Is it really needed? I'm probably biased, since Oshii works - cult stuff for me. They will probably take Oshii visuals and paste it on later works, Stand Alone Complex and stuff like that. Given Laughing Man is in it. To make it more flashy and action packed, less existential. I can totally expect them adding some sort of romance, or hints of that, since it sells, but do I want it? No. I like this one-way dynamic. Batou is fascinated by her, but she's completely absorbed by her ideas and doesn't respond.
