Droping Amazing Spider-Man

Because Quesada really, really wanted to get rid of the marriage badly.

Marvel Comics Inc. wanted to get rid of the marriage badly, and Quesada is their fall guy to take the heat/backlash from the fans.

The marriage (which occured in June (or maybe July) of 1987, and even had an actress in a wedding gown and some guy dressed up like Spidey at a Mets' game at Shea Stadium), was forced upon us initially because Stan Lee was going to marry the couple in the newspaper comic strip... In the comics, the two had not been dating much, but Peter proposes to her out of the blue, and the rest is history.

Many creators at the time (and many still do) claimed that this would be a big mistake for those wanting to write Spider-man.

Seven years later, a mystery figure known as Ben Reilly (the clone of Peter Parker) shows up with Marvel's intent of stating that he was the "real" Peter Parker and that the guy we had been reading about since 1975 was the clone... he was to move on to Portand Oregon with Mary Jane (he had lost his powers at this time), have babies and live happily ever after. Ben Reily, the real Peter Parker, was to take up the mantle of Spider-Man, and life was supposed to go on... with a new single Spider-Man and potential new supporting cast. This was Marvel's attempt, this has been acknowledged by creators working the story... so the Joey Quesada "agenda" is just pure bullsh1t for people that can't handle "change"... Marvel has been wanting a single Spider-Man now for a minimum of 15 years...

So when you make such an ignorant blanket statement like "Because Quesada really, really wanted to get rid of the marriage badly.", check your facts and history.

Cheers...

:yay:

Marvel wants to ensure that their character, the one they own, is in a good state for many decades to come, and with a married Peter Parker (with the potential to have kids), they feel that have painted themselves in a corner, and despite what the fans want NOW, future fans may not be so interested in geriatric Spidey celebrating his 30th wedding anniversary, but being late for his son's college graduation because of a fight with the Rhino...

Then, when the time comes, and the fans change, change the character to match it. Problem solved.

I don't think so in this case. First off, I don't think sales will drop on ASM. There are far more people like TMOB, who are happily enjoying ASM without a care for OMD, than there are like the fans who are still pissed about it. Second, even if sales did drop, I doubt anyone behind the scenes at Marvel, having chafed so long under the marriage, would be in any rush to reinstate it. Joe Q's a convenient and fairly appropriate scapegoat for OMD in particular, but he wasn't the only creator who hated the marriage.

Yup, cuz he can't write married characters. Hence his recent mediocre Flash run.

I don't see what's so hard about it.If your a good writer you should be able to pull it off.JMS did.

I don't believe that MarvelBoy rumour any more than anybody else with a brain that reads it...

:whatever: :whatever: :whatever:

Since the only places that rumor has popped they are quoting marvelboy's post, I tend to agree with you.

Asked my store to take it off my pull list today... handed them back the one they'd put back from week before last (easter really messes with popping to the store).

ill support ya, i haven't dropped it yet... but i love how things are suppose to be "fresh and new" when they arn't at all.. same old formula

-lilly = MJ type
-other girl = gwen type
-peter
-harry
-menace = goblin
-freak = monster (venom, lizard, vermin) type
-mr. negative = mob boss (kingpin, big man, silvermane, etc) type

it's pretty much nothing new, nothing original and alllll been done before

Towards the end, but it's not like Waid married them off and then left. He stuck around for 20 issues after their wedding.

Oh noes, demasking!

Again?

Anyway, I gotta say something. I think people are confused as to why a lot of people hate OMD and Brand New Day. First, it was never about the marriage. I think most of us would be slightly annoyed if their marriage ended, but we wouldn't have hated it if it was done in a much more reasonable way. Involving Mephisto was ******ed, fact. Just have them separate for MJ's safety or some ****. That easy. Reasonable, it works. Second of all, all the unnecessary changes it brought forth. Peter is a loser again? Harry is back for no reason? Ok, what was the point of that? Finally, it was just a badly written comic.

The face looks like Califiore's art to me. Which is not a good thing.

Agreed on all accounts. Except for maybe the last part. Slott's arc was just okay, Guggenheim's was better, but Gale's was some of the worst Spidey I've read.

The last part was more about OMD, I haven't read BND at all.

#558 is the start of another Gale arc with Kitson on art.
