Already breaking records. I guess this is why a sequel was announced so quickly.

Bourne Ultimatum was the previous holder for most ticket pre-sales in August and that did $69.2m opening weekend.

Yes, but that was seven years ago without 3D and ticket prices cost less.

Just saying, if Bourne Ultimatum sold a comparable amount of tickets today and it would've been in 3D it would've made a lot more than $69 million.

Yeah, which is why ticket sales are not widely used. It is apples to apples compare, but it usually doesn't favor the new opener. That being said, it is still impressive for August.

Somewhere, deep within a hidden basement, Alexei B just bolted upright out of a deep sleep, screaming incoherantly!

Well, I can guarantee that I already have 59 dollars down on this puppy...16 for Thursday night and then two tickets for Friday in IMAX 3d for 22.50 a piece...

This movie better rock my world at those prices, btw, :yay::yay::yay:

That makes it one continuity not one franchise.

A franchise is a series of films about the same characters or concepts. For example Harry Potter about Harry Potter, Stat Wars about the Skywalkers, Mission Impossible about Ethan Hunt ect. Thor 2 doesn't have any of the same characters, settings or story as TIH, Iron Man. Captain America doesn't have any of the same characters, setting or story as GOTG ect... Separate franchises, one continuity

They're not separate franchises because the characters' stories can bleed into each other at any time.

Maybe it confuses people because there's no precedent for crossover movies on the level of MCU. Nothing has ever been attempted like it on this scale. But Marvel Cinematic Universe is one giant franchise. If Black Widow dies in Captain America 3 she'll be dead Iron Man 4 and Avengers 3. If Nick Fury captures Loki again you'll notice in Thor 3 and possibly on Agents of SHIELD.

Separate franchise don't have intersecting stories like this. They just don't.

Dunno, I think he's probably jerking off like crazy right now considering all the ******* his favorite character is getting in this movie :oldrazz:

The problem with this theory is they'd have to spin off from something originally. They don't. Each series, from Iron Man to the Avengers, is like a comic book series. Distinct, with their own runs.

MCU is just like comic book crossover events.

Just like crossover comics each solo story has it's own artists and tone but the stories intersect with the the other solo stories to build up to a major event.

Or in the case of MCU, multiple major events.

Ok, that does it.

Its tracking better on RT than CATWS did at this point, its Twitter numbers are spiking tremendously, and its Movietickets.com sales % is already better than DoFP (although DoFP had to deal with Godzilla) and is almost up to TASM2's numbers for today despite tougher competition now.

I'm raising my prediction to:

85M OW/245M Domestic/455M OS/700M WW.

That would be tremendous!

I hope GOTG will gross 90 mil in its domestic OW, and I think it has a chance to make it happen.

^Gosh, I never thought my hope of a $70M+ opening weekend would be seen as conservative on this movie. :D

Hah, yeah. 5 days ago I was daring to hope for $400M WW, now that number is ludicrously low.

below 60 = personal disappointment
65+ = satisfactory
70+ = happy
75+ = beyond happy
80+ = fanboy heaven

Kyle Smith didn't like it?!? I'm shocked. SHOCKED.

No, the Avengers is the "crossover" event, though it is more like the usual Avengers book. The "solo" franchises are just like comics. Characters crossover all the time. It will be the same with the Star Wars spin offs.

Yep. Some characters may cross-over but an Iron Man movie will always be about Iron Man and his supporting characters and Thor about Thor and his supporting characters. Individual series of movies a.k.a Franchises

Okay so name some separate franchises with intersecting stories, characters or details.

Yes, some of the solo movies have self contained stories but often they have details and characters that appear or impact other MCU films.

Seperate franchises don't share the same characters or story arc.

We get Loki's origin in Thor, his failed attempt to conquer Earth in Avengers and Loki's release from prison in Thor 2.

In Cap 1 we get the origin of SHIELD, Captain Americs, and the tesseract. In Avengers we get a modern update of all three. In Cap 2 we see the fall of SHIELD.

Iron Man 2 introduces major SHIELD characters, Avengers shows SHIELD help organize the superhero team, Iron Man 3 shows Tony Stark shell shocked from the events of Avengers.

Black Widow has appeared in Iron Man solo movies and Captain America solo movies. Nick Fury has appeared in Iron Man solo movies and the Agent of SHIELD tv show.

Thanos will like play a bigger role in solo movies moving closer to Avengers 3 as a mastermind behind the scenes.

These characters are connected, they share the same continuity, they visit each other's movies and their smaller stories are part of a larger picture.

Separate franchises do none of those things.
