Guardians of the Galaxy Early Guardians of the Galaxy Box Office Prediction Thread

With the apparent success of Guardians of the Galaxy I fear for the crow population.

What is this actually tracking at? Around 80 million? I imagine this will have great WOM too so minimal drops.

If it makes 80 million US, what are the chances of it clearing 200 million world wide this weekend? If it does that we gotta be looking at at least 550-600 right?

All the trades were saying 65-66 million, honestly I think 75 mil is the floor.

With the amazing positive reviews, I hope it will gross at least 80 mil OW.

I'd say $80M is all but assured at this point.

Never in a million years would I have thought that an IP so obscure, that even the most hardcore Marvel fan-boys know next to nothing about it, would be at the brink of cracking 90 mil. Bravo Marvel, you are the closest thing to unstoppable in Hollywood. Might as well go ahead with a Great Lake Avengers movie because that will probably get to 75 million, no problem.

If done as well then why not? They can stand in for the FF since MS doesn't have the film rights. ;) But it would make more sense to spin off the West Coast Avengers before doing that, I think as they have a larger and more storied history to draw from. I'd also do a Defenders movie fist but it seems the Netflix is gonna handle that(even though they're not MY Defenders team that I grew up with).

Deadline is reporting an $11.2M late Thursday/midnight tally for the film which is the best so far this year.

Just remember something guys. The biggest openings for August were like The Bourne Ultimatum and Rush Hour 2. Those made like just under $70 million. Ultimatum came out in 2007. That was before massive 3D and IMAX releases like this.

So just saying, if Ultimatum came out today and it was still able to sell a comparable number of tickets, plus it had maybe 3D or IMAX formats, that would've given it a lot more than $69 million. Probably would've been like $80 million-ish.

Actually, probably closer to $90m, if not $100m.

Oh yeah! :up::up:

This flcik will shut up all those "they are not mainstream enough, nobody will see that" comments hopefully for awhile.

This flicks important, people want good fresh properties.

John Campea over at AMC has said that if this hits big then basically nothing is off the table anymore. If they can make this work then they can make anything work if approached from the right angle. I tend to agree with him on this one.

You know what that means? SQUIRREL GIRL!

On a serious note though just imagine what Marvel could do with the Fantastic Four. It's kinda sad really.

As part of the GLA, sure.

There's really no way to know for sure how much it would be today since it's more than just inflation we're talking about.
Yep. Either way, great success for GotG.

Maybe this film will usher in a new age in Hollywood were the reliance on sequels and reboots will give way to trying out new things as well as not being scared of obscure properties. One can dream haha

Maybe not a Squirrel Girl movie anytime soon, but I'm calling phase 4 cameo!

I don't know about other studios but Marvel/Disney will likely do that. It's easier when you have such a string of hits(all both critical and box office-wise). Pretty much only Marvel Studios and Pixar have earned that luxury. Other studios first gotta get on the ball more otherwise they're going to let fear of failure(a legitimate concern for them based on their track records) inhibit any efforts to behave as you said.

Just got back from the 11AM screening. The theater was about 3/4 full. Which i'd say on a Friday at 11AM in nice weather is pretty good.
