Elemental - Pixar's newest movie

Going to see this Friday the animation is gorgeous glad to see the critics rating on the up. Now if only this wasn’t released in packed June it’d have better box office chances.

Only gonna make about $35M this weekend. Unfortunately audiences have been trained to wait for streaming now, especially since these movies all feel like the same now.

I thought they’d be able to get more families interested. Have other recent Pixar films been opening low too? (I haven’t kept track)

Only Lightyear got a wide release since Covid and it flopped. Everything else has gone straight to D+

I watched this movie today and I fell asleep. For context I have never fallen asleep watching a movie at the cinemas.
Damn, that bad? :csad: Seeing the trailer ahead of another film got me interested after not knowing about this till then.

I see. Thanks for that. I remember Lightyear. Maybe I missed all the ones that went straight to D+.

The last pre pandemic movie that I watched was Onward and I did fall asleep in that one but I still saw the ending.

And since Disney+ came out, I don't think I will ever see a PiXar movie in the theaters again. A monthly Disney+ fee is really much cheaper than 1 movie ticket. It isn't just worth it to me anymore.

The only one I enjoyed was Turning Red. The story and animation was different than most Pixar movies.

Soul was another odd couple road movie they always do. Luca was ok but nothing special.

Official Thursday preview number from Disney is…$2.4 million. Ooof. I advise heading for the nearest shelter immediately, nuclear box office bomb incoming.

Do Pixar movies usually do well in previews? Maybe too late for the kids or something. :csad:

Toy Story 4 did 12, Rise of Gru 11, families do come out, especially since “previews” start midafternoon now.

Oh right, so this is absolutely not comparable. Film’s gonna disappear soon. :csad:

Some more detail from deadline:

Elemental received great grades last night of 4 1/2 stars from general audiences and 69% recommend while kids under 12 gave it 5 stars and a 69% recommend. However, the movie came in lower than what rival distribution sources were expecting with a very low $2.4M. That’s slightly higher than Onward‘s $2M and that was off 6PM showtimes in early March 2020 when Covid fears were just bubbling. That Pixar troll movie posted a low $39.1M which tied with 2015’s The Good Dinosaur as one the Emeryville, CA studio’s lowest openings at the box office. Disney is hoping the movie gets to $35M. We’ll let this film breath, hoping it can get a boost on Father’s Day Sunday before we examine the corpse. The Disney/Pixar movie leaned 60% women, and 65% moms with girls outweighing boys, 66% to 34%. Women over 25 showed up at 32% (85% grade), women under 25 at 27% (89% grade), men over 25 at 25% (85% grade) and men under 25 at 15% (67% grade). Diversity demos were Caucasian 31%, Hispanic and Latino at 27%, Black at 17% and Asian at a very strong 20%.

I hope Pixar can bounce back long term. My nieces will get to the age to be able to start watching films like this soon and I want to be able to take them (and have an excuse to go to them all).

It would suck if Disney ditches theatrical releases for future non-franchise Pixar movies because of this.
