Mystery/Thriller Elementary - CBS's Modern Take on Sherlock

The two shows are different, but I think they are equally good. Truly. I find the chemistry palpable and the first season ties things up quite nicely by the finale. You mileage may vary though of course.

One thing Elementary does better than Sherlock at this point:

Dealing with how a personality like Sherlock's makes people hate him, especially his colleagues in the police

Also, I think Sherlock has gotten way too gimmicky.

I also like that, unlike many shows from the last 15 years or so, that Sherlock's churlishness and misanthropy is not celebrated by the show and he has had to face repercussions for his manner of dealing with people. Yet they also don't try to make him super cuddly either.

I especially liked that one monologue where Sherlock doesn't really self-loathe himself but said to Bell, "I'm a drug addict. One year ago I would've been as terrible of a person as you could ever find."

I feel like this season of Sherlock, they basically made Sherlock super cuddly now.

Now I mean, seeing his parents and stuff like that, that's cute and all. But again, its made him more a cuddly teddy bear deep down and all that. He's become way too cute.

Like that one scene where Watson leaves the room, he comes back and he's arranged a bunch of napkins.

Sherlock is basically ****ing WALLE now.

If they hadn't ended the Magnussen arc the way they did, I would have agreed with you. But given how those events played out, I'd have to say you're dead wrong.

[BLACKOUT]Sherlock killing Magnuessen in cold blood was much more brutal than anything Elementary's Sherlock has done. Especially since the one time we've seen Sherlock on Elementary close to killing it was for revenge. The Magnuessen killing was just a cold assessment of the facts and what Sherlock thought was an appropriate reaction.[/BLACKOUT]

I agree with that blacked out assessement. I don't compare the two interpetations because for me it's apples and oranges. In the sense that apples and oranges are fruit that comes off a tree and are edible. They both taste good but they are both very different in taste, texture, look, and everything else.

In the same sense Elementary and Sherlock are both about the same character but otherwise are nothing alike. Some people might like one but not the other. Or like both of them.

Did anyone watch last night's ep? It confirmed a speculation about Mycroft. Also, Lucy Liu directed that episode.

Mycroft's true status wasn't that surprising although I didn't expect it to come out that way. They did a good job making him seem more inept than he was.

Next week is going to be terrific after that ending. Also thought Lucy did a great job with that ep.

Liu directed the episode? Wow. It may have been the best one of the season to my mind. Mycroft having some kind of connection to the law enforcement or intelligence operations of the U.K. should surprise no one really, but on this show, up until now, it seemed like they weren't going down that road. Even with the mystery phone calls, I have to say, I wasn't expecting it.

To add to the SHERLOCK vs. ELEMENTARY debate, I think of it this way: SHERLOCK is about how amazing Holmes is despite his being what most would call a damaged individual. ELEMENTARY is concerned with how Holmes is a damaged individual despite being what most would call amazing. In fact, I think this may play into the next episode in some way. According to canon doesn't Holmes think his brother is even more brilliant than he? If Mycroft had hid his affiliation with MI-6 or what have you from Holmes that would mean alot. Perhaps the real distinction between the two could be that Mycroft can actually deal with other people in a generally healthy way, where Sherlock is, well, Sherlock?

He is according to Sherlock. They joked about that in the BBC Sherlock series how they thought Sherlock was the dumb one until they met other people.

Elementary on the other hand took Mycroft and made him seem lazier and more out of tune with his capabilities right up until the end. I figured that Mycroft must have some kind of government connection and it would come into play eventually, but then they have him wait until they are very nearly dead to actually utilize it.

Well it is possible that this continues into the coming episode. Though frankly, from the looks of that team, tracking the mobster's car and surrounding him wouldn't be much of a challenge.

Not to mention he had the list for hours. No telling what tricks and traps were added to it before he gave to Frenchy.

Is the next episode the season finale? That couldn't have been the season finale right?

Now I could be missing something, but any particular reason that Mycroft needed to continue that subterfuge with Holmes after he tazed him? Why not leave Sherlock some clues as to what was really going on and just keep him incapacitated until it was done?

I think what we thought was sinister the whole time was merely Mycroft and British Intelligence trying to fool and exploit Holmes into finding the list and capturing these mobsters. So we got that resolved at least.

I really liked all of last episode. This has been a great season for the Holmes Bros. on the show. I LOVED that Mycroft and Joan got together. It's too bad their mutual love for Sherlock will never let them really be a couple (That's my take anyway). The way Holmes just couldn't comprehend why Joan would want to leave the brownstone was touching as well. Liu is truly smoldering as Joan and that little outburst on the brownstone steps clarified a lot of her character to me. Oh and is Ifans like the guest star MVP this season or what? Love his and Miller's chemistry together. Cannot wait to see where the season ender takes us. I am hoping for a non-cliffhanger type deal, but if not... OK. Showrunners may want to test the waters.

And Lucy is truly smoldering in this show. Her age has for some reason made her more attractive to me than when she was younger. Her wrinkles and her imperfections are more alluring to me than Chloe Bennet's unblemished skin and nubile curves. YMMV of course.

Not sure I needed to see Mycroft and Watson in bed together. I'm still not sure they "earned" that reconciliation.

Now if Mycroft is really being framed, my guess is that it's the MI-6 dude that asked Sherlock to investigate it.

I love how despite their arguments, Sherlock automatically assumed that Mycroft was just being framed.

This season wasn't as interesting as the first, and the lead-up to the finale/finale wasn't as shocking with the whole Irene twist.

I like Rhys but I just don't get or feel anything for his Mycroft.

Also, felt like Holmes wasn't given enough to do or excel in during this season outside of the snowed in/robbery? episode, premiere, and the stuff with Bell.
