I didn't think Crowe was bad either. Would I buy an album of him singing? No. But he sounded real and raw.

As per Emma, difficult to tell because I'm so used to the original. Need the full picture. Right now just so difficult to judge without comparing because my mind keeps darting back to the original.

and another thing to remember.......

we are all so used to the original versions of these songs, both in terms of the original voices and the original phrasings and beats, that any change or deviation is going to be jarring at first.

I know when I first listened to the movie Phantom soundtrack, and Butler's singing in particular, I didn't like it because I grew up on the Crawford/Broadway versions of the songs. However, in time, I grew to prefer movie Phantom and Butler because of the "rawness" in his voice.

Same with movie Les Mis to an extent ( not for all songs though ).

Even Broadway Mermaid and B+B took awhile to get used to. I think I still prefer original B+B, but I now prefer Broadway Mermaid over the original.

I avoided Les Miserable after I learned the entire movie dialog was done in song. I can stand musicals but not 2+ hours of people singing the narrative.

It gets pretty exhausting. Even the most mundane line is sung through in Les Mis.

If I didnt like the story so much there is no way I could tolerate it. And the fact that Hooper wanted to have the actors singing live on camera instead of lip syncing pre recorded tracks really didn't help the film.

Lovely voice. Lovely actress. I'm seeing this just for her tbh.

Listening to her made me have flashback to the cartoon.

I think Emma sounds good.

Disney has officially released the snippet of Emma singing

I gotta say, I really like her voice. I'm not as shocked as I thought I'd be hearing a different belle singing.

All I know is a lot of you are blinded by hate. She sounds AMAZING, yet all you can say is ''fine''

Don't bother to response to my post. I don't give a damn about your opinion.

PS: The trailer sucked (not really but it was not good) but Emma sings beautifully, so there might be hope. Hope the new trailer is released soon and has a lot of the musical elements in it!

I saw a TV spot with a lot of new stuff.

Emma is very charming.

Yikes.

That's the kind of catch-22 when it comes to making a musical film. On the one hand, people want "professional sounding" singers because, well it tends to make for good singing.

On the other hand, these are supposed to be real people singing about stuff that's happening in their day to day life, so them sounding more "real and raw' makes the most sense in-context.

Ironically, Crowe was probably the most technically proficient singer in that film. His voice just isn't suited to the role of Javert as it is generally portrayed.

Agreed, which is why I said that his voice/style probably didn't suit the material, rather than it/them being flat-out bad on their own.
