Superman Returns Ending Comments

Throughout the entire movie, I was on the edge of my seat loving EVERY second of it. Great movie.....but then the ending came, and my girlfriend sitting next to me proposed a few things to me, and all of a sudden the movie was a complete mystery to me.

1) Superman's speech to Jason: When he says "the son becomes the father and the father becomes the son/SUN," what is this implying? We concluded that in essence, since Superman went through so much kryptonite and wounds to the point where he was practically dead in the hospital, that the Superman that we know, that appeared in "Superman Returns," is dead. Gone. When he says "the father becomes the SUN," this means that Superman is now goes to the sun to channel his energy to his SON, where his "SON will become the father." This is a mouthful, but as we saw it, Superman is gone...but Jason will live the life Clark Kent did and be the next Superman...meaning in the next movies, it might start out "20 years later...." in the beginning.

Also along with this theory, if the plan WAS to kill off Superman in a very symbolic fashion as suggested, I think they should have made a reference to Clark Kent in the Newspaper offices somewhere. Like, before the globe falls down and before everyone evacuates...wouldn't it have been great if the chief threw out a "......Where's Clark?"...and made everyone wonder? Or even Lois or the other short reporter...just to make everyone know, that since Superman is dead, and Clark Kent is randomly not showing up at the offices anymore, that it has now clicked to Lois that Clark was Superman. (This only works if they meant to kill off Superman).

Alright, I made you guys read that, so any comments would be great!

In Superman The Movie, Jor-el says this same thing to Kal-el before sending him to Earth, so it's a "completing the circle" thing. Superman is now the father, just as his father was.

Umm, the exact same speech repeated at the beginning of the movie andsprinkled throughout in all the Jor El voiceover sequences.

Superman was passing down the words of his father to his son. It's just sentimental/symbolic tradition from father to son in every generation. Tell your girlfriend to pay more attention to the movie :) :) :)  :doom:
