I really liked the part with Jor-El and the whole "The son becomes the father and the father becomes the son" How do y'all interpret this?

I personally think it has double meaning(s). I think that it 1) serves as a metaphor to the actual sun that powers Superman. The Sun becomes the father (gives Superman life ie) when he recharges after Kryptonite poisoning, and the father becomes the sun (to Jason ie Superman gives life to Jason) Also, it relates to Jor-El to Superman Superman to Jason. Lastly, and maybe most interestingly, Superman gave life to Jason. When Superman was hospitalized, and Lois spoke those not-so myterious words in Superman's ear, the knowledge that he had a son gave Superman a reason to live. It gave him life (the son becomes the father). What do y'all think?...........:supes:

I need to know a few things, What does lois tell superman in his ear, also what does Super man say to jason when he is sleeping and how does he find out jason has powers???

I think that is what Lois tells whispers to him & before that Lex practically told Superman during the confrontation about a son inheriting his fathers traits & all that stuff

I kind of got a lot of different meanings from that scene. Considering the speech in context with was replayed of Jor-El's speech from STM it came off very religious for me. I sort of seen it like Superman was imparting the same God-like words his father imparted on him, about his destiny and where he will stand in the world. He mentioned being an outcast, and that at times he will feel alone, but that HE will always be there watching.

At least that is what I got...touching scene...though I still think the homage was misplaced.

I think it just means they'll grow stronger through each other's eyes. A son teaches a dad so much about being a father, and a father teachs their son so much about life, etc... so i believe it's meant to be taken to mean they'll equally be raising each other... pfft, maybe... i don't know really

Are you talking about that scene of him watching over the kid the end? Aside from the hospital scene (and most of the action sequences), it was my least favorite scene in the movie. really cornball, and sort of made the ending feel soggy.

ok answer my other questions higher up this page and this one: LEX KNOWS CLARK IS SUPERMAN???

I don't think ANYONE knows what she whispered because...well...it was a whisper! As far as what Superman said, it was essentially that "you'll never be alone. You'll be different....you'll have great power." A lot of stuff that Jor-el said to Kal-el before sending him to earth.

And why would Lex know Clark is Superman? Where did you even get that?

Good question all Lex knows is that Jason is Superman's son & that Lois & Superman did tit

Go rent the '78 Superman movie. GO NOW!! :)

I have been asking everytime I got to blockbuster for my whole life, everytime they say they dont have it!

He will not be alone. He will never...
be alone.

You will travel far, my little Kal-El.
But I will never leave you. Even in
the face of my death the richness of my
life shall be yours. All that I have learned,
everything I feel, all of this and more I have
bequeathed to you my son. You shall carry me
inside you all your days. You will make my
strength your own, see my life through your eyes,
as your life will be seen through mine. The son
becomes the father the father becomes the son. This
is all that I can send with you , Kal-El.

Your name is Kal-El. You are the only survivor
of the planet Krypton. Even though you have
been raised as a human being, you are not one
of them. You have great powers, only some of
which you have, as yet, discovered ...

did any of you notice..she looked at jason before she whispered to kal-el? she proly thought he'd have super hearing so she whispered lol

^doubt it, how would whispering help if he has superhearing? She looked at Jason so the audience makes the connection that she's whispering something about him to superman.

Lois told Superman that Jason was his child, that's what was whispered in his ear. Here's my interpretation of symbolically how that relates:

People have complained about the film not showing Supes as being alone, 'Clark' and 'Superman' both have Ma Kent and Lois to understand them (which is why Superman was so upset about Lois moving on, welcomed the public attention again, and so on and so forth).

BUT, the only individuals that 'Kal-El' has and can relate to are his birth parents. He had to throw those relationships away with "new Krypton" though, and at that point he was all alone (hence the symbolic death). It wasn't until he learned that he had a son- that 'Kal-El' wasn't alone and did have someone to understand him- that he was again alive.

Another point is that Superman has become his father, in that he is going to allow Jason to be raised by a mortal.

Throwing this out there, but I think its ambiguous enough (and I've notice others comment on it too) that Jason may be something along the lines of Jor-El reborn. 1) It could help justify the final part of the "father becomes the son" line. 2) Superman's loss of his relationship with Jor-El "kills" him in the film. He isn't "alive" again until he finds out of his relationship with Jason (so I'm saying it could be the same relationship). 3) and maybe Singer did it just for kicks, but someone else pointed out to me that Jason's initials are "J.L.", which could be "J. El", and blah blah blah.

Not saying "the film is saying that this is true but nobody has noticed it..", just figured I'd point that stuff out and mention the ambiguity neither supporting nor denying it

Yea.. If a sequel is made I see Richard and Lois raising Jason, not Supes (with Richard being told the truth about Jason)

i didn't get the speech... i get the 'son becomes the father' because superman became a dad, but, the father becomes the sun? what does that mean?

now that i think about it, what did it mean when jor-el said it? i remember reading that brando had a thing for just rambling in front of the camera until the director saw something he liked... maybe his speech didn't mean anything at all? it certainly doesn't make sense to me...

That is one part I liked. Jor-El is saying, with a family (which Superman now has), he is living through his son..because Jor-El wasn't able to watch his son grow, because the planet was destroyed and they sent him to Earth. That is what the quote means. Living through someone elses eyes. etc.

Brando as Jor-El is still the best. But the thing about all the Superman movies is, it seems like Jor-El is the most influential to Clark...when really in the source material, it is Pa Kent that provides the backbone of the man that Clark is to be.
