I understand a lot of portugese just from knowing spanish.

*Nod*, actually it's pretty fun, if you know latin you can understand a lot of european languages except... german. If you have to learn german you make the jump from romanic language into a language based on gothic and celtic grammar.

I read this article on AOL, apparently the tourism board is worried about this since they say its one of the more highly recommended spots for tourists.

Don't tourists actually make an attempt to learn the preferred language of the country they visit, if it's different from their own?

I've not been to Germany yet, however when I do visit I would at least bone up on my German as it's been 11 years since my last German class and I know I'm a bit rusty.

Actually no, or at least in my experience. I would be working and some German guy comes to and starts speaking German to me, I have no idea what hes saying so I just keep saying nein.

I didn't insult you and didn't give you a reason to do it.

I did read it, the article says:
"There is nobody who can say they are turned down because of the language," he added. "They can point if they want to."

I interpet this as:
People go to Geno's, see the sign, say "I'm not putting up with this $#1+" and go to a place that doesn't have a "you're not welcome sign". He only gets orders in english.

"This is America -- when ordering speak English" sign = "Can't give you credit today, come back tomorrow" sign
you go the next day and they still give you no credit, nobody will ever ask for it.

It's not a "you're not welcome sign". It's a sign that prefers orders in english, since they always have a ****load of customers.

I've read plenty of Daredevil comics. The dude could tell if you're flipping him off based on the wind, smell and some other stuff due to his super-hyper-extenuated-senses.

Since he doesn't exist in real life, I've no problem giving the finger to a blind person if he/she warrants one depending on the circumstances
