"Epic Mickey" aka Terminator meets Disney

Wow, this looks really interesting. Certainly have to keep an eye on this. Honestly if this is good, I wouldn't mind a world based on this showing up in the next Kingdom Hearts game.
On that note, I wish they'd announce a new KH title soon.

While I'm no doubt still excited as hell for this game and it still looks excellent (and we can definitely see that Mickey is indeed quite retro now), something about the vibrant colors in the images in the scans kinda killed the vibe I was getting from the concept art. I expected something...duller as opposed to bright? A little more weathered, maybe?

Agreed. I was thinking it would have more of an ominous color scheme as well.

EDIT: More scans at the GameTrailers.com forums. High res scans on page 5.

looked pretty sweet from the drawings til i saw this. Looks like a kiddie game to me now.

So? Big deal, I always find it absurd when people dismiss games just because they're "kiddie" in their eyes. If it's fun, it's fun and nothing should get in the way of that.

As I feared, be it the Wii or the developer's fault, the brilliance of the concept art isn't captured in-game. :(

I might still check it out depending on the oncoming previews and word of mouth, but as of now I'm disappointed that I wasn't given a visually awed as the various drawings indicated. :down

It's the wii.

The amazing concept art has turned into a mediocre looking game. Which sucks because it looked so imaginative. Those screens look like any other generic platformer. I especially love the emptiness of the sky/background.

It better play well or this will be one of the biggest falls from concept to execution in awhile, imo.

It's the developers, too. They could have done more.

1. Even on much more powerful platforms it's rare to see a game that closely resembles it's concept art. Did you guys honestly think that this Wii game would or could match that awesome art?

2. Warren Spector is desiging this game. That alone should be enough to assuage your fears over the quality of Epic Mickey.

Anyone with two eyes that compares the two can see how little resemblance they have. It's like they didn't even try to capture the atmosphere and tone the drawings had. Very little mood found on these screenshots, and that has nothing to do with graphical power.

Speaking of, Wii is capable of good graphics. While it may not be HD, this is a system companies like Capcom have made full use of. Especially for a game like this that doesn't rely on photorealism, and could very easily be a AAA title...the results are disappointing.

It is only a handful of screenshots. We should wait until we get more.

concept art made the game look dark and mature, at least meant for teenagers. Screenshots looks like its been designed for the kids, usually when that happens that means the gameplay, puzzles, etc will be aimed for children as well. Which i hate, i love challenging games,

Appealing to children doesn't mean it can't or won't be challenging. New Super Mario Bros. Wii is going to be one of the harder Mario games. A Boy and His Blob is also challenging.

It's a Mickey Mouse game. It's not going to go overboard with the darkness and maturity.

Read the magazine article today, looks a ****load better than those screens from before make it look. :woot:

If I had a Wii, Epic Mickey would be a must buy simply because Warren Spector is involved.

What I don't get is why the PS3 and 360 versions were canned  Gonna have to dust off the Wii for this

i'm glad it is, but stumped, that this is wii exclusive. maybe it's appealing to wii-owners' demographics.

I didn't even know there were 360 or PS3 versions. I thought this had always been a Wii exclusive.

I don't see how. Mickey Mouse hasn't been relevant for decades. Kids probably won't even know who he is.

EVERYONE knows mickey lol. he's just so iconic.

WS in an interview said that this game was imagined and built with the Wii in mind, there was never a 360/PS3 version in development.

Yeah, everyone knows of Mickey Mouse. He's sort of infiltrated mainstream America and sort of become imbedded in our culture without really us knowing it every step of the way.

Not everyone knows Mickey Mouse. But everyone knows of him.

More info on Epic Mickey:

The game centres around a world created by the sorcerer Yen-Sid (the same one Mickey disobeys in the Sorcerer's Apprentice sequence in Fantasia, movie trivia fans!) which is a home for the forgotten Disney characters and ruled by Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, Disney's first major star before Mickey hit the scene. Early in his career Mickey accidentally spilt ink on the tiny world but decided to cover it up. As a result, over time the ink has devastated Oswald's world and Mickey's been transported there to fix things up.

Spector said:

My very favourite games to play have always been Nintendo games, so I started thinking 'what would happen if I took the exploration and tool use of a Zelda game, and the platforming of a Mario game and brought in some of the character customisation and story and role playing elements of, say, a Deus Ex, and mashed them all together?

In the game Mickey uses a paintbrush to alter his surroundings, which may bring up thoughts of Okami but Spector was keen to stress differences. Mickey's paintbrush uses paint and thinner on the world and objects that surround it; paint creates and thinner destroys. Choices you make as Mickey also affect him and other characters in the game: while Mickey can't be completely amoral, players can choose to be the nicest mouse with best intentions at heart or a mischevious scamp. Spector describes how that works in a discussion of the first hour of gameplay:

In the first hour, your goal is going to be to find a particular character somewhere in this world. You can seek out other characters that can help you find the character you're looking for, or you can rescue characters in need who will then help you, or you can bully your way through and try and do it all on your own.

Spector himself sounds incredibly keen on this title and apparently Disney are too, as there's a lot of money backing the project. As Spector admits, "this is by far the biggest budgeted game that I've ever worked on." There's a lot riding on this one, but with Spector's passion and talent behind it we should be in for a treat when Epic Mickey launches later this year
