Evil Dead (2013)

Saw this earlier instead of Jurassic Park. What a mistake. Such a disgusting movie. Hard to sit through.

I don't wanna say anything negative about it because I know it's just not my kind of movie. I only saw the first Saw and refused to watch any of the sequels. Gore is not my thing.

Saw it today and while I certaintly wasn't expecting the black humor of ED2 or AOD I think they could've used it, as is it's just another gory torture fest that I didn't see the need to attach the Evil Dead name to it but hey that's just my opinion.

I would've at least expected one of the actors to be the cocky Ash type but meh there can only be one Bruce Campbell.

After this I had sneaked into see the idiotic Scary Movie 5 and I don't know how the writers of that movie managed to get the same plot devices of ED even right down to the book of the dead [blackout]being wrapped in barb wire.[/blackout]

2/5 stars

Yea I saw this opening weekend ( actually the 10pm Thursday night screening) and while I don't think it's a horrible horror movie it's just not my cup of tea. It's more gross than anything. Maybe the originals are better but I just didn't care much for the story or the characters. The movie was definitely over hyped in my opinion. Just my opinion though, I am just not really a horror movie fan though I do go see them with friends etc.

This wasn't as good as a lot in this thread would have had people believe. Eh. Another movie that can waste your Saturday evening on HBO instead of $12. Then again April isn't really known for great movies so I should have known better. May is almost here.

It wasn't awful by any means, just not worth it I guess. Not worth the time and money.

You see, no offense, but this is the kind of reaction that I love. :hehe:

Unfortunately, the red band trailers gave away all the major gore set pieces (save for the stuff in the final chase at the end) and between that and knowing the original films so well, I was surprised how undisgusted I was with the movie.

But then I see the uninitiated reacting like that and it reminds me how worthy of Evil Dead's name the film is. I have just been desensitized to this filth by Raimi already. :awesome:

Seriously, though sorry you did not care for it.

I gotta say, it's pretty cool that the victim, villain, and hero are all the same character in this. It's a nice narrative twist that I don't think I've ever seen before.

One thing that I will throw out that the people who really hyped or "overrated" the movie as so many detractors are starting to accuse are either critics or horror fans. Horror fans see just about any and every horror movie and critics just about any and every movie period. So, they know the conventions so well that they do not necessarily go into a movie looking for something to earnestly reiterate those story beats that audiences want or tries "to scare them." They look for something that is just unique or stands out.

While gore is not something worth being praised alone, the gonzo levels of absurdist bloodletting this remake gets to is so OTT that it is almost comical. That unapologetic approach right down to not shying away from the paper-thin premise from the original is probably why so many like it. But it probably does not play as well for those who want a more traditional horror movie that does not expect the audience to be tired of the formula, but neither will bother to reinvent it like CITW did.

Just a thought.

The OTT violence is just what this movie called for. You dont go to a damn horror movie for watered down violence. That is why I actually enjoyed FvJ, the scene of the two of them hacking away at each other was excellent.

My only complaint about the movie was that it didnt allow for suspense. Had it allowed tension to build, I'd have given it a 10/10 instead of 9/10.

Yeah. This movie is advertised as something your not really supposed to see. People who say it's too gross, are just benefiting the film ever further.

This was a movie built around demonic possession, bodily dismemberment blood raining from the sky... what did you guys expect? Even those of you taking it at it's surface, what more did you expect? Of course there was gore, of course the violence was over the top.

For some of the story behind Evil Dead, you have to pay attention the VERY fine details and know a little bit about the Necronomicon Ex-Mortis and how it ties in with HP Lovecraft and the Cult of Cthulhu. Knowing all of that really brings a new appreciation for what Raimi did with the original and the incredible concept that the Evil Dead story is.

As you can probably tell, I LOVED this movie. It was just a small gap behind the original, which is my favorite movie of all time. I know these movies aren't for everyone and I can respect that. But if you notice the complexities Raimi, Campbell and Alvarez put into these films, you should at least respect it. It's a lot more in depth than just a gore-fest in the woods meant to disgust you. That was just a very exciting side-effect.

No, you really don't. The Book of the Dead is just a McGuffin to get us to the splatter.

I have got to agree. I feel fairly certain that Raimi took the name Necronomicon because he thought it sounded cool/funny and wanted to be cheeky in his movies.

They are really the opposite of deep or layered. They are entirely surface level visceral experiences in gore, camp, horror and just out-and-out comedy in AOD's case. The remake actually has more character development and plotting than at least the first two movies and probably the third, but audiences are still calling it dumb and underdeveloped. Why?

Because it is all a pretense to get to the "good stuff." If you appreciate the sickness of that real focus of the movie, you will enjoy the ride. If you do not, the movies will just come off as strange and pointless.

It's true, ED13 did have much more of a story. I watched Evil Dead II last night and while I love it and all it's wackiness, it's basically just Bruce Campbell beating the **** out of himself for awhile until a new group of people show up to die. My biggest problem with ED13, though, is how wooden the guy that played David was. Good God he's a bad actor. It was painful. The other guy wasn't much better. At least Jane Levy was great.

I loved the movie! Imo it is more worthy of its predicessors name than most horror remakes.

The gore and practical effects are top notch. And Jane Levy was spectacular! She has a bright future so long as she chooses her projects carefully. I look forward to seeing her in future projects, hopefully a few of them being Evil Dead related.

My only gripe would be
The "Abomination" was nothing more than another female deadite. I was expecting something more intimidating. Especially after the build up, and then the line, "He's coming..." then a creature that looks no different than the deadites that came before it appears. I was expecting something a little more, i dont know, other worldly? It doesnt need to have to be full blown a HP Lovecraft type monster (although this would be my personal preference. I love Lovecraftian monsters) it just needed to be something that looks more like an actual demon than a possesed human girl. Small gripe but i can see there are at least some who agree.

Other than that, no complaints. I will watch this movie at least 2-3 more times in the coming months.

I'm supposed to see this again on Thursday. I'm gonna plan a double horror feature with this and Rob Zombie's new movie. I'm genuinely surprised by how entertained I was by this movie. It's almost absurd.
