Ewan McGregor Is Black Mask

Sionis is also very specifically coded as a misogynistic gay man. There's a wonderful specificity to that which I greatly enjoy, if only because that's an ugly and prevalent issue in the community that flies under the radar much of the time. Wish the film went a little deeper into this because his dynamic with Canary is infinitely more dramatically interesting than Harley's falling out with an off-screen Joker, but, that movie would never have gotten made.

Man Ewan was just having a ball in this and honestly I was eating up every minute of it. He might not have exactly been the Black Mask from the comics, but I enjoyed his spin on the character and he definitely had some effectively menacing moments and I would have really liked to see him return for another movie.

I enjoyed him as a villain and wish we would see more of him in future DC films. BUT DC (and Disney) need to stop with this whole "OMG! Look a gay!" but not have the balls to actually showcase them with the same sex romantically or even talking about their sexuality in any way to the point where they might as well be straight.

It was a weak take on Black Mask, but who knows. Maybe they can revamp that character again somewhere down the line if they want to use him again.

He would have been good as a villain over more than one film as he looked good without the mask, but we would then have had plenty of time with him in the mask too.

I actually do think its slightly cowardly how they dance around his sexuality in interviews. Part of it is presumably not wanting to piss people off with a gay villain but... It's fine? I don't think he's an offensive stereotype or anything. Also relegating Harley's bisexuality to a visual gag.

This shot was everything.

Man I wish he actually wore the mask way more in the movie than he did. As dope as this shot is it's sad that it's towards the end of the film, and he only wears for a really brief moment before taking it off for some reason.
Yeah I wanted to see a lot more of him wearing it, even though it was good to see Ewan in the flesh too. When he wore it at the end he should have kept it on. Maybe we just needed to see him in another film so we’d have more time to see him with it on.

I have said before I don't really care what sexuality they make a character as long as they write the character well but got to honest I came out of that film not even really knowing if McGregor's character was gay. He seemed more metrosexual to me (only heard he was confirmed as gay after the movie)

Same for me. I’m not exactly the most knowledgeable or with it on these things but it didn’t really cross my mind too much while watching.

Ewan was really good in the role and I liked the spoiled, pouty man-child characterisation of the Black Mask but he really didn’t get to do a lot which was disappointing. And I really wish his and Zsasz’s relationship was more overtly romantic because the whole time it felt like it was shot that way but then they edited it to “no-homo” them even though it didn’t really end up feeling that way. Does anyone know if that’s true or was it always just meant to be ambiguous?

I definitely got a homoerotic vibe from them, but I'm gay, so maybe I had a different read on it than others? I don't know. They definitely came off with a "vibe" to me, though.

I am not gay but I got it as well. It seemed more on the homoerotic side than outwardly "gay" though.

Yea I’d agree with that. I don’t think they were like, having sex or anything.

Sionis comes off like a misogynistic woman hating and probably also self hating gay.

Yeah that was what I suspected...I just didn't feel comfortable saying it originally. I mean they could've been having sex too but sort of keeping it on the down-low.

This could just be my reading, but I saw Sionis as a repressed self hating gay with a lot of issues roiling around inside including but not limited to his sexuality, so while his relationship with Zsasz might have homoerotic undertones, I doubt he’d be comfortable enough with himself to get “there”, i.e. actually overtly acting on it.

People completely over sold this performance in talking about it. I was expecting him to be MORE over the top. Some people were comparing this film to Harley Quinn TAS too which is wayyyyy off.

I usually think McGregor is kind of bland so I didn’t go in expecting a lot. He wasn’t spectacular or anything but he was entertaining.

I do think toxic masculinity was the right to project onto Black Mask as a character. Good read on the character. Wish he'd had a bit more storywise, and more significance in terms of larger designs for Gotham, although maybe that's the point.
