‘House of Cards’ Composer Jeff Beal Will Score Steven Spielberg’s Series ‘Extant’
By ANTHONY D'ALESSANDRO

EXCLUSIVE: Emmy-winning composer Jeff Beal has come aboard to score the CBS Steven Spielberg series Extant starring Halle Berry. Beal, whose cool, steely trumpet and suspenseful piano playing in the House of Cards main title theme promptly captures the corrupt atmosphere of Capitol Hill, was tapped by long-time collaborator Allen Coulter, who is directing the pilot episode of Extant. Beal and Coulter previously worked together on Netflix’s House of Cards and HBO’s Rome.

“Part of the reason I’m excited about Extant is that it is ordered straight to series for 13 episodes, as was House of Cards. Having scored several television pilots over the years, I feel the creative energy is more pure and focused for a composer working this way vs. the pilot process which always seem to ultimately get polluted by the ‘sales pitch to a studio’ kind of creative process,” said Beal. The composer approached House of Cards as if he were scoring a 13-hour film, inspired by the no-holds-barred direction of the series for which he received two Emmy nominations for Best Theme and Best Score.

Extant, from Steven Spielberg’s Amblin TV and CBS Studios, centers on an astronaut (Berry) who returns home from a year-long solo mission in space and tries to reconnect with her husband and son in their everyday life. Her experiences in space and home lead to events that ultimately will change the course of human history. The series will premiere on CBS on July 9 at 9pm EST/PST.

Premieres tonight. Really hope it holds up better than Under the Dome has.

sure hope this'll be good... half hour to go...

Robokid got annoying. I will give this a few episodes before deciding on yay or nay

It was okay. Felt like the same three scenes just different variations. Same info.

same here, it was ok, but it didn't really grab me... and I'll have to give it about the next couple of eps to see how it goes...

and for the record, that kid is an annoying little f**k...

That kid could not have been less annoying, and that's even including the tantrum over the ice cream. Y'all are just ageist as ****. :o

I liked the show, first episode set up a good amount of mysteries. Hopefully all questions will be answered by season's end.

Watched this last night, not bad. It's all the matter of will it live up to the hype and rewarding revealings. I'll keep watching it though.

9.4 Million great ratings. Hope it keeps up.

ratings for any first and second episodes are are always deceptive and based on curiosity... it's how the ratings are for the show after the initial hype has settled that are telling...

I think we all know that. But the ratings could've also been A LOT worse.

I'm liking it so far, very impressed visual effects.

Creepy Looper kid is creepy. I find Robot children creepy but this kid seems creepy in whatever role he plays.

Hiroyuki Sanada has graduated from playing a shady genius boss on SyFy's Helix to playing one here.

Drug boss guy from Bate's Motel and Meryl Streep's daughter were cool. Hopefully they have more to do later on.

Considering this is a Steven Spielberg produced show I'm expecting aliens.

The spaceship stuff was very Solaris.

it's alright. i liked it enough to catch the next episode.

as for the kid. he was okay til he snapped over the dropped ice cream.

Just watched it and I like it so far. Kid was ok. He looked like the kid in Looper but I'm assuming it's not the same one.

I freaking hate CBS.
They don't have the episode on Amazon or any form of instant video (aside from their crappy site)

Still got to watch it...but not putting it on Amazon really tells me they are not too big on pushing this series.

I really liked the first episode, more so than I was expecting. I really like the eerie mystery tone of the show and I thought Halle was good and the scenes on the shuttle looked movie quality.

The Humanics angle immediately has me wondering if the guy that appeared at the end who had died after going through something similar to Holly, is actually a robot.
