i had another thought. there is this guy, a mutant, in the comic books, named Changeling. He, like Mystique, can make himself look like anyone. His story goes, that he used to live a life of crime. Years later, now a reformed man, he came to Xavier and asked if there was any way he could make up for his bad ways. So the Professor asked Changeling to impersonate him while he dealt with a forthcoming invasion of Earth by the alien Z'nox.
ANYWAY the point is, Changeling died in action, as Xavier. However, the real Xavier felt obliged to pretend to still be dead, untill he felt like returning.
I dunno, they changed the comic book story anyways, so why not alter this story to fit in with the movie? Have Changeling take X's place.
