If everyone had sex when they thought they were ready theyd all be having sex when their 12 and 13 and such.. but theyre not ready then emotionally for it... and thered be ridiculously high levels of teen pregnancies, STDs, and all sorts of problems. Thus we have laws to take the decision out of their hands until theyre old enough to be able to make a responsible decision.

by that same irrational rationale, next year they might incarcerate a 17 year old who fools around with a 16 year old, 13 year olds who are found kissing get sent to juvenile hall, and people who are cuaght masterbating get sent to mental institutions for perversion, and then the age of conesent is rasied to 21, and then businesses which carry Playboy are fined and shut down, and then the Attoney General of the United States has a cloth draped over the statue of Lady Justice because he thinks the exposed breast is indecent. Maybe he didn't deserve such a harsh punishment, but i tihnk the courts just needed to make an example. He was just unlucky, in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Its not a case of agreeing/disagreeing with the laws, but when you start quantifying how much you are or arent allowed to break a law with it being acceptable, it will just keep getting worse.

Today, youd have cases like this being ok, then in 10-20 years time youl have 25/30 year olds sleeping with 12/13/14 year olds and it will be ok, because theyre both mature enough to make their own decisions.

Laws only exist because we as a society generally agree upon them. Unpopular laws are often struck down, in the rare unfortunate instances where they're even passed in the first place, such as this one.

If tomorrow morning I wake up and find out it's now illegal to, say, have sex with someone unless you're married, I'm not just going to say "Well, the law is the law, gotta respect it" I'm NOT ok with that law. And unlike certain other laws which I know I don't care for but I know I'm in the minority on, this is one which I know many people disagree with, and I happily voice my discontent, as can the others

Even in Changing the laws. Say the law was changed so it was legal for people who were 15 to have sex. thats ok. But Then 14 year olds are only a year younger so that wouldnt be so bad. Thatd be ok surely? So we change the law so you can have sex with 14 year olds. thats ok. but 13 year olds, theyre ONLY a year younger, thats hardly much? that should be ok surely? so we make having sex with 13 year olds legal.
I do think that he was punished harshly, but i do think the courts must have had reason to feel that they had to do so.
Maybe a regulation of the laws is needed.. could even make it more like the Canadians close age peer group aproach... but the change needs to be done at the right time for the right reasons rather than just letting people slip through who are breaking current laws.

I cannot advocate teenage sexual activity but I do agree with your comments and this is the part that frightens me the most about this incident.

In America, we the people are suppose to be the ones who dictate our laws, not have our laws dicated for us by whatever person, lobby, or interest group.
