I’ve just got back from finally watching Iron Man at my local Vue. Excellent film aside, despite losing its way a little in the rush to get to that final bout of fisticuffs, I was amazed by how many young children were in screen seven with me.

Iron Man is a 12A certificate, the official definition of which as being suitable for people 12 years and older and that no children under 12 will be allowed in, unless accompanied by an adult. The problem the BBFC has long had is that since the introduction of the 12 certificate for Batman, the pressure to give films a sub-15 rating is huge and Iron Man is a perfect example of falling between two stools. Not gritty enough to be a 15, yet tougher in general themes and violence than a PG. By giving itself that ‘unless accompanied by an adult’ get out clause, the BBFC has effectively absolved some of its responsibility to the general public. The problem with that is that much of the general public, bless ‘em, are incapable of making that decision for themselves.

During Iron Man, I witnessed the following. A young girl in front of me, no older than 8, nuzzling her head into her mum’s shoulder throughout the entire film as she clearly didn’t like the explosions, suggested sex and threat of violence throughout.

Behind me, a group of 6-12 year olds, accompanied by their mother, talking throughout the bulk of the film because they just couldn’t keep up with the plot. Two rows down, a young girl could be heard to say throughout the entire mid-section of the movie ‘it’s scary’, ‘oh it’s scary’, or ‘I’m scared mummy’. A mother two rows behind commented on the suggested sex within the first fifteen minutes, ‘This is for kids, I can’t believe they’re showing this.’ The fact that the film clearly isn’t for kids was lost on her, and therein lies the problem.

If the public are so incapable of being able to ascertain for themselves that Iron Man is going to contain violence, that Tony Stark is a womaniser, hence the possibility of sexual dalliances, and that the entire story of how Stark becomes Iron Man is not an entirely kid-friendly one and therefore perhaps inappropriate for anyone under 12, then they have lost the right to choose what their children deserve to watch. I think that even if you didn’t know much about Iron Man beforehand, the trailer gave a lot of that away. And anyway, if you’re taking your under 12 to see it, isn’t it your responsibility to make sure you know more about the damn film before doing so?

The upshot of all this of course is that my own cinema-going experience is nigh on ruined by distractions. My suggestion of how to stop this is simple: adult-only screenings. Let’s face it, for the real movie fans among us, there’s nothing worse than paying over six pounds for a ticket, only to be annoyed by a bunch of disinterested and impatient young children. Why not have, for just a couple of screenings a day, adult-only admittance to 12A and 15 films. That way, the joys of Indy, Iron Man, and The Dark Knight won’t be ruined.

I think the BBFC should never have created the 12A in the first place. Doing so placed too much power with those incapable of making a mature, considered decision. Adult-only screenings would give serious movie lovers the attention they deserve, and send a message to parents that perhaps this film might not be the one for little Judy after all.

Who hasn't had that happen?

Really... I hate it and welcome kid-free screenings.

I made this argument on the Hype once and people thought I was being a fascist.

This is why I usually buy my tickets for movies like these for the latest show possible.

You did it wrong.

I'm not talking whole movie theaters or certain movies, I am agreeing with the one-screen idea to let people enjoy movies without some kids. Hell, if they can do kid friendly screenings... they can do kid unfriendly ones.

Parents should know what movies their kids should be taken too. As a parent it's your responsibility. Plus with the Internet it makes it that much easier to get peoples opinions. If you do not bother to find information about the movie and then take your kid to an early showing. If your kid keeps talking, joking around or looks bored then take them out of the cinema. No point in ruining it for the rest of us. I don't pay 9-10 euro to listen to some kid talk for 2 hours.

We have the 14A here in Canada and The Dark Knight has a 14A rating.

I just don't think we'll ever see anything like adult-only screenings incorporated.

Any screening that begins at 10 PM or later should be a kid-free screening IMO.

When I'm sitting down for an R-rated film at 10:30 PM and I see some mouth-breathing morons walking in dragging along their jabbering toddler, I just want to grab a fire hose and blast them all right out the door before they can even sit down.

I'd love theatres to start having adult only screenings.

My gf and I got back from seeing Tropic Thunder a few hours ago. Some ****head parents brought in a baby and a little girl. The daughter couldn't have been older than 7.

This is a rated R comedy with lots of swearing and some gory violence in a scene or two.

Not only did the baby cry a lot but about 3/4 into the movie the Mom starts heading out of the theatre to the bathroom or something. The 7yr old daughter runs after her down the steps asking some ******** question as loud as possible almost drowning out the movie.

It seems like more and more inconsiderate morons are not giving a flying **** about the other people who paid good money to watch/listen to a movie not their ****ing kids.

Sounds awesome! Can I bring my three month old son? :hehe:

The problem is that even some adults don't know how to keep silent and keep their cell phones off in films.

But this would be a step in the right direction. Especially if the movie starts at 10pm at night.

People don't care about others when going to the movies. They only think of one person only. And that one person is themselves.

I would love for this to happen but i know nothing like this is ever gonna happen.

I can't remember how many movies were ruined by little kids who wouldn't shut the hell up or cause parents are too damn dumb.

Like in May when i saw the strangers. A guy brought in a boy and a girl they both looked under 10 years old. and i thought to myself you got to be ****ting me. I felt like saying something to the guy but i didn't.

It's like parents don't even notice what the rating is. Like sometimes they block out their loud mouth child but still others have to deal with it.

You can't bank on that anymore though.
I went to the midnight premiere of Hancock. Some family decided that bringing their 3 and 4 year old kids to the movie was a good idea.

I personally believe that children under thirteen should not be admitted after 9 pm on weekdays, and 10 pm on weekends. It could never be implemented nationwide, because the logistics are fairly tricky, but that would be nice.

People are never gonna do it cause they think they're gonna lose money and don't care about the customers.

I always want to say something...primarily talk some major **** about how much of a ****ty parent they are. It would just end bad though.

You would most likely get the typical "don't tell me how to raise my children" response.

I tell you though, my tolerance is lowering while my temper/anger is rising. I might just snap one of these days on someone. Go off on them regardless of the outcome.

I just can't stand how inconsiderate and selfish a lot of people are in this ****ty society of ours. Too many people think the world revolves around them.

I agree, man, that'd be awesome.

I have only had one problem with a kid at a late showing and that was during Spider-Man 3. Then again the kid was more entertaining at some points.

I don't think they will ever make that rule. Someone will always show up not knowing and flip out and they will let them in.

I hate people, especially children.

I need a home theater.

Same here. Especially with my dvd collection being a lot better than most everything that comes out in theaters... which makes a ruined theater experience even worse.

Kids are the reason I see movies at like 9:00 at night. When I saw The Dark Knight I heard these kids whispering throughout whole movie " Look it's Double Face!"

Especially teenagers who won't shut the hell up and think everything is a joke. cause they are spoiked brats and don't have to worry about money, so they just goof off for the hell of it.

Like when i went to see Incredible Hulk in June their was this loud mouth teen or whatever i don't know. he blabbed his whole way through the trailers. I know its the trailers and its okay for people to comment but not talk during every single damn preview to the point you can't hear them cause the kids talking to much.

So finally the movie comes on and he's still talking and acting like a goof when he sees the marvel flip book page thingy they have in all the movies. And finally the dudes phone rings and he picks it up and is just making so much noise. I just loose my **** and turn around and yell shut the f up! and get off the f'ing phone! He just looks at me and continues to talk. and this is where i really get pissed and yell now! At the top of my lungs and i basically almost get face to face with the guy. He turns off his phone and doesn't say a damn word after that. Except when leaving the theater he gives me a dirty ass look and i felt like saying you feel froggu go for it my friend.

That's the kind of stuff I hate!

I don't care if people think of me as a loser but when it comes to the dirty look...I'm almost at a point where it's not below me to get physical over a ****ing movie.

Some of these spoiled brats need to be put in their place. The problem is I don't think their parents ever disciplined them.

Thing is though, if you let all the stupid people of the world get to you and make you do things (like not enjoy a movie or get physical) you're going to hate life and they will have won. :down
