Fantasy Hockey Year:Three

Thoughts on "Jurassic" Clarke resigning from his post? Wish he was fired, never liked him. The Flyers seem like the St.Louis Blues of 2006/2007; just a long season stuck in last place of the division. Of course who knows what crazy things could happen in Long Island. Atleast Hitchcock signed his three year deal a few weeks ago, he can go back to making Chef Boradee appearences at grocery stores.

I bet Clarke was fired as well, but was given the opportunity to "resign" due to his close to 35 years with the Flyers (player 1969-1984, GM 1984-1990, 1994-2006)

Hey Slinger, without me sounding like a complete dumbass, what's the +/- stat?

This only occurs during evenstrenth play (not powerplays). If your player is on the ice and his team scores a goal, he gets a +1 and so does everyone else on his team that's on the ice. The team that was scored on, they all recieve a -1. The aim is to have players with a high + rating. Its just another stat to measure the player to see if they mostly score even strenthed (which is the best), on powerplays (which is good but means they only score with a numbers advantage) or if they're on the ice when goals are scored. The better the team, the better the +/- rating is. Defensemen usually have the highest or lowest scores.

So while "Gretzky" scores 2 goals and was also on the ice for 3 other goals against his team. He ends the night as a -1.

TSN introduces Million Dollar Shootout
10/24/2006 5:16:08 PM

On the heels of TSN's successful Wendy's Kick for a Million campaign, TSN Tuesday announced another million-dollar giveaway with the launch of a brand new hockey contest, the Chevy Silverado Million Dollar Shootout.

One lucky fan will take to the ice for a once-in-a-lifetime chance to win $1 million and up to five next generation Chevy Silverado trucks for them and their friends.

The event will air live nationally on TSN and TSN HD on December 27 during the first intermission of the game featuring the Calgary Flames and Vancouver Canucks.

One randomly chosen winner and five friends of his/her choice will receive a trip to Vancouver where the winner and two friends will take to the ice for the shootout. In addition, one fan attending the game at GM Place in Vancouver and a second randomly chosen online entrant will have the opportunity to get in on the winnings.

During the first intermission, the participant and the two friends will head to centre ice where they will have 15 seconds each to shoot 10 pucks at an open net (30 pucks total). Depending on the amount of total goals scored as a group, prizes will be as follows:

5 goals – participant wins a 2007 Chevy Silverado
10 goals – participant and both friends win a 2007 Chevy Silverado
15 goals – participant, both friends, online entrant and in-arena fan all win a 2007 Chevy Silverado, for a total of five trucks given away

Immediately following the group shots at centre ice, the participant will move back to the far blue line where he/she will have 24 seconds to shoot 20 pucks into an open net. If the participant scores 15 or more goals within the allotted time, he/she will win $1 million in a windfall one-time payout.

The contest started October 23 and runs through December 3. Fans are invited to enter online at www.TSN.ca/silverado and play the Chevy Silverado Shootout game for bonus entries. Fans can also refer friends to the contest for additional entries. On December 6, one randomly chosen entrant will be drawn to participate in the Chevy Silverado Million Dollar Shootout.

Coyotes need to fire their scouts and GM.

Good thing we lost Jets
Can you imagine paying to watch the Coyotes they morphed into?

Thu Oct 26 2006 Winnipeg Free Press
MAYBE it was the agony etched on Wayne Gretzky's face as he watched in horror while his Phoenix Coyotes were stomped 6-1 by the Calgary Flames the other night.

Perhaps it was taking note that the Coyotes are now 2-8-2 on the season, were a pathetic 0-9 on the power play versus Calgary, and are now dead-last in the Western Conference.

Or maybe it was just being reminded that Phoenix hasn't made the playoffs since 2002, and despite considerable optimism this year -- what with the signings of Ed Jovanovski and Jeremy Roenick -- seem destined for another season of utter futility.

Regardless, it got me to thinking: Geez, that could have been us.

You know, there still remains much bitterness and a pang of loss about the departed Jets, but maybe at least one way it was a blessing in disguise.

Really, can you imagine having shelled out upwards of $12,000 on season tickets over the last nine seasons to watch THAT?

The average season ticket in Phoenix this year is US$1,300. Top-end seats are worth $2,700. All for the pleasure of watching a team now ranked 27th on the power play and 27th in penalty-killing.

Hey, you can't say the Coyotes aren't consistent.

"I think we hit rock-bottom about a week ago," lamented Roenick after the loss in Calgary. "We're just remaining there. It's something I've never seen in my life. It's utterly embarrassing."

And to think, we could have been paying through the nose for the privilege of sharing in Roenick's pain. Think of all the forests that would have been sacrificed this last decade to document a franchise with a draft record rivalled only by the Oakland Seals.

Take the year 1998, for instance, when the Coyotes selected a goaltender named Patrick DesRochers 14th overall.

Five picks later, the Colorado Avalanche chose defenceman Robyn Regehr. Three picks after that, the Philadelphia Flyers drafted forward Simon Gagné. Both Regehr, now with the Flames, and Gagné are NHL all-stars and mainstays on Team Canada.

Later, the New Jersey Devils took Scott Gomez 27th, while the San Jose Sharks, not to be outdone, selected Jonathon Cheechoo, who led the NHL in goal-scoring last season, with the 29th pick.

Today, DesRochers is toiling for ETC Crimmitschau, a second-tier professional team in Germany (No, really).
And so it has gone for the Coyotes, whose only draft function seems to be supplying the ECHL with a healthy stock of prospects. In fact, the Coyotes' only decent first-round pick, Daniel Briere, waited until he was traded to Buffalo before exploding to NHL stardom.

So if the Jets hadn't left, that could have been you breathlessly watching that same 1998 entry draft as your home team proudly selected Pat O'Leary in the third round (73rd overall), just before the Devils took a young prospect named Brian Gionta.

Last season, Gionta scored 48 goals for the Devils. O'Leary scored one goal in nine games for the ECHL's Reading Royals.

In fairness, we should point out that the Coyotes made the playoffs in four consecutive seasons after moving to the desert. Which meant you could have paid even more money to watch them lose every time in the first round of the post-season.

You could have had a front-row seat to the franchise's demise since 2002, as the Coyotes haven't made the playoffs since, all the while cobbling together a tedious 93-118-29-16 record.

You could have seen the club dismantle, dumping former Jets stars Nikolai Khabibulin, Keith Tkachuk and Teppo Numminen, to be replaced by a revolving door of underachievers and burnouts like Brett Hull, who retired after just a handful of games in a Phoenix jersey, itself another tragedy for which the Coyotes are responsible.

Think you've missed anything, Jets fans? Well, consider that every single individual franchise record -- most goals, points, assists, penalty minutes, etc. -- is still held by a Winnipeg Jet, almost all high marks established in the early 1990s.

How bad are the Coyotes? They can even drag down the reputation of the Great One. Indeed, it's like everything that touches this franchise turns to crap.

Of course, there's no guarantee that had the Jets stayed, Winnipeg hockey fans would have been subjected to -- and had to pay dearly for -- this level of spectacular incompetence. But just consider the possibility for a moment.
It's good for the soul.

They're in a desert in more ways than one

* 1998-99: 39-31-12, lost in conference quarter-finals to Blues (3-4).

Slipknot, which player should I drop so you can pickup? ;)

Ask Themanofbat, I traded Kipper last year to him in the other fantasy league. The Flames were horrible and I couldn't drop Kipper so I traded him, I got Lalime, dropped him and maybe picked up Ryan Miller. The first game Kipper gets a win and goes onto to all those shutouts and wins. Essentially giving Themanofbat 1st/2nd for most of the season until I came in at March and won the league.

I gambled this week on Forsberg. I figured he's only got two games this week, the team is ****, he's got a injury, I'll pick up Sean Avery who has four games, get some penalty and possbily some other points.... well two games to turn it around. So that was probably been the a stupid thing to do but still lots of time in the season.

um, thanks.

Something else was posted there then I took it down. So I needed something and just saw that on NHL.com. Jagr right now is the only one who might get into the third spot.

Ouch, Huet gets a win and shutout but wasn't dressed. Gotta remember to dress your players for the entire week, you could actually win the week.

Lantern's Ringers (8) and The Losers (6) are against each other this week but haven't been active since the Oct.16 and Oct.23.:down

Thoughts on the latest 'Belfour scandal'? If anything really bad happened I doubt Auld would stay quiet and the whole team wouldn't let anything leak. Still Crazy Uncle Eddie needs to stay away from nightclubs and late night shenanigans. He doesn't have a billion dollars to pay off people like last time.

Ugh, I hate Mick Magoo. What a horrible call he made at last night's Oilers game :down

He's always doing something stupid. The Oilers got screwed out of one point last year and just got into the playoffs. MacTavish will probably snap and hunt him down if the Oilers miss the playoffs by one point. Or steal $10,000 at gun point.

NEW YORK (CP) - The NHL has established a new monthly leadership award in honour of Mark Messier.

Many consider Messier to be the greatest captain in hockey history. The six-time Stanley Cup winner wore the C for Edmonton and the New York Rangers to become the only player in history to captain two teams to an NHL championship. He is also a former captain of the Vancouver Canucks.

Messier will be at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday to present the first winner with the award.

Messier, with input from the league, will select a player in each month who best exemplifies leadership qualities on and off the ice.

There will also be a leader of the year award given at the end of the regular season.

The Anaheim Ducks were busy on the trade front on Monday, making three separate deals involving forwards.

The first trade saw the Ducks send forward Stanislav Chistov to the Boston Bruins for a third-round pick.

The team signed Chistov to a two-year contract worth $800,000 per season over the summer, but he played in just one NHL game this season.

The 23-year-old played with Anaheim in 2002-03 but spent last season in Russia, scoring 11 goals and 21 assists in 47 games with Metallurg Magnitogorsk.

Chistov produced 12 goals and 30 points in 79 games in 2002-03, then added four goals and two assists in 21 playoff games. He struggled the following season, managing only two goals and 18 points in 56 games before winding up with Cincinnati of the AHL.

The Ducks made two other deals on Monday, sending winger Todd Fedoruk to the Philadelphia Flyers for a fourth-round pick and acquiring George Parros from the Colorado Avalanche for a second-round selection.

Fedoruk, 27, played four seasons with the Flyers before being traded to Anaheim in 2005. In 306 NHL games, he has 14 goals, 54 points and 701 penalty minutes.

Parros, 26, was acquired by the Avalanche through waivers from the Los Angeles Kings on Oct. 3. A shoulder injury kept him out for nine games this season.

And World Juniors Training Camp starts in a couple of weeks!:woot:
