Blackhawks fire Yawney; hire Savard

The Chicago Blackhawks have fired coach Trent Yawney.
Chicago general manager Dale Tallon has announced that Blackhawks legend Denis Savard will replace Yawney behind the bench as the head coach - not the interim head coach.
A new assistant coach will be hired by the weekend.
Sources say the firing of Yawney was attributable to his cautious, defence-first approach and that Hawks' management is looking for a more aggressive, offensive mindset in terms of how the team plays.
"The bottom line is wins and losses and we needed to win more," said Blackhawks General Manager Dale Tallon. We've had some injuries, but in spite of that we're a better team than our record shows. We've won three of our last 15 games and we decided to go in a different direction. We want to play a more up-tempo style game."
The Blackhawks have a 7-12-2 record this season and sit fourth in the Central Division.
Injuries have played a part in the poor start, but there is some good news for Savard. It's expected that scoring wingers Martin Havlat and Rene Bourque could be back in the Hawks' lineup by next week.
"We're not happy over the last few years as far as our win-loss record is concerned," Savard said in a statement before coaching practice. "The players have to share that responsibility. But we're looking to move forward and go in a new direction.
"I've always wanted to be a head coach. The circumstances are not the greatest because when you take over for somebody mid-season it means things did not go as well as we all expected. I'm looking forward to working with Mark Hardy and upper management as we move forward in this new direction."
Yawney was in his second season as Blackhawks head coach and compiled a 33-55-15 overall record. He's the third coach to be fired this season, following Philadelphia's Ken Hitchcock and Columbus' Gerard Gallant (who was subsequently replaced by Hitchcock).
Savard had been an assistant with the Blackhawks since retiring from the NHL following the 1996-1997 season.
Savard, 44, played a 17-year NHL veteran with Chicago, Montreal and Tampa Bay, scoring 473 goals and 865 assists for 1,338 points in 1,196 games, adding 175 points in 169 career playoff games. As a Blackhawk, Savard recorded 1,096 points in 881 games and added 145 points in 131 playoff games.
Savard is one of only five players in Blackhawk history to have his number retired. Savard's No. 18 was raised to the United Center rafters in a special pre-game ceremony on March 19, 1998. He was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2000.
Pronger prepares for return to Edmonton

EDMONTON (CP) - This won't be the first time Chris Pronger returns to play a former team, but it will surely be the most anticipated.
The 32-year-old star defenceman, now with Anaheim, plays in Edmonton on Tuesday for the first time since requesting to leave the Oilers after last season.
He'll likely be booed all night. Even during Friday night's win over Chicago, Edmonton fans booed when it was announced that the Oilers' next game was against Anaheim.
Pronger was sensational in leading the Oilers to within one victory of a Stanley Cup championship last season. Acquired from St. Louis just after the lockout ended in August 2005, Pronger signed a US$31.25-million, five-year deal and looked set to anchor Edmonton's blue-line into the next decade.
But citing family reasons, the six-foot-six, 220-pound Pronger asked for a trade right after last June's Stanley Cup final, shocking and angering Oilers fans. Message boards and blogs were flooded with rumours and attacks on the former Hart Trophy winner for turning his back on the NHL club.
Pronger got his wish July 3 when Anaheim gave up winger Joffrey Lupul, defenceman Ladislav Smid, the ninth overall selection in the 2004 draft, a first-round draft choice in 2007, a conditional first-round pick and a second-round draft choice in 2008.
The 32-year-old native of Dryden, Ont., is off to a great start this season, putting up 26 points (4-22) in 25 games, tops among all NHL defencemen. His plus-16 rating is second only to the plus-22 of Detroit's Nicklas Lidstrom.
Pronger returned to play Hartford with the Blues in 1995-96 and then returned to St. Louis with the Oilers last season.
"With the Hartford situation, obviously you want to play well and you want to win and show them up," Pronger told reporters in Anaheim on Sunday night. "I scored a goal in that one. The St. Louis one, I think we beat them 7-2. So you always want to get off on the right foot, especially when you go into the other team's building.
"You know the fans will be on you, so it's never easy. So we'll see how it goes. It'll be nice to go up there and enjoy the crowd. The fans treated me great when I was there."
slinger said:Wonderful job by the NHL and their television networks. The game is on a local Anaheim channel and PPV in Alberta. TSN did have the first meeting between the teams but that was in Anaheim where they can't even sell out the building with the first or second best team in the league. Sportsnet West has the next two Ducks/Oilers games so at least some hockey fans can watch Pronger get booed all game long in Edmonton.

slinger said:You only beat me because Ryan Miller was pulled so Biron came in for relief and met your requirements for games played by a goalie. Otherwise I would've been awarded all five goalie stats and the win for the week. We'll meet again in the spring
