Republicans saying that impeaching Trump would be “partisan and would divide the country” don’t seem to be aware of the irony of them saying this.

...So rushing to confirm a conservative Supreme Court justice shortly before the election and contesting the legitimacy of a election your party’s president lost weren't partisan and didn’t divide the country then?
140+ members of Congress voting to object to Biden's certification immediately after an armed insurrection attempt on the Capitol wasn't partisan and didn't divide the country?

It could be sent to the Senate possibly even later this week rather than next week.

2/3 of House Republicans + Senators + Trump + ~80% of Trump’s voters + deny Biden won the darn election. They created this divisive beast and have no room to blame the impeachers.

This is where it gets confusing.

It's my understanding that they can only vote to disqualify Trump if they vote to remove him first. Which obviously they can't do if he's already out of office.

If that's the case, 7 days to convict, remove, and disqualify.
Like I said, some are saying the senate has the ability to, basically, do what it wants when it wants, and, these are respected attorneys.

Excellent! Get the bastard out of there. I doubt most New Yorkers want to be associated with him any more.

It's actually a bit depressing that the decision to impeach is being made by corporations. That they are openly bragging about withholding their bribes until they get what they want.
I approve of the ends, but the means are a disgusting indictment of the US political system.
Imagine if the corporations were all run by MAGA execs!

So is the vote for impeachment today? It all seems so laid back.

I don't know if I'd say "laid back", but it's certainly process and it's there for a reason. I used to have to run various conventions that involve resolutions, constitutional changes, policy votes, etc. The point is that if you don't have specific rules approval and so forth, people can come back and question the process. A lot of back biting can go on during these laid back votes (rules, question, etc.).

Pick up the unabridged Robert's Rules of Order. I had to learn it (thankfully I've forgotten a lot of it). If you can read it and get halfway through with an understanding of it, you are both smarter and more disciplined than I am.

Jared and Ivanka desperately trying to salvage whatever political capital they have left.

At this point, I don't care if the senate takes a secret vote if it results in Trump being removed from office and not allowed to run for any office again. Let them lie about whether they did or didn't vote for removal.

I wonder if Trump has already signed pardons? If he were to get removed, before he got around to that, it would fall to Pence. Wonder what he'd do?

BTW, what they are voting on right now is to move on directly to the impeachment vote. After that, they will probably pass the rules for the impeachment vote (unless they've already done that as part of the previous votes) and then vote on impeachment itself. That's why these seemingly endless layers of votes are important.

EDIT: Oops...forgot I'm watching on delay. They are moving directly to impeachment. That vote passed.
