TRICKS OF THE TRADE

Christopher Nolan says he wasn't particularly a fan of magic before "The Prestige."

But after making the film about two 19th-century magicians — played by Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale — whose rivalry turns dark and sinister, the director of "Batman Begins" and "Memento" feels a "real kinship" with conjurers.

"As I studied the principles behind magic and the way in which a magic trick relies on the willful suspension of belief, I realized that a lot of what filmmakers do for an audience now is what magicians did for audiences in the past."

Given Nolan's past films, it's no surprise that the characters in "The Prestige" are obsessive.

"I've always been drawn to stories that exaggerate our everyday experience, that give them more relevance — the film noir genre, thriller genre. It gives a heightened sense to everything that happens in the film."

But did he favor one of his crazy magicians over another?

"For me to be on my game, I have to like all the characters. My sympathies wavered between the two, which is the way I hope the audience does. I didn't want it to be an obvious good-guy/bad-guy dynamic."

Right now, Nolan is deeply in pre-production for the next Batman movie, "The Dark Knight," which starts filming in April and also stars Bale. Nolan's reason for casting him in three films?

"Christian has got a very, very extreme form of intensity that comes across on the screen."

We get it, but despite the intensity that Nolan, Bale and Jackman put up on the screen, "The Prestige" is fun, entertaining and a bit of a trick — one that you enjoy getting fooled by.

Boo-urns. I guess it doen't matter too much if filming is delayed, we will still get the movie at the same time. Might get the trailers and other stuff a bit late though.

Perhaps it was the filling of Harvey that delayed ...or perhaps the Rachel character.

Good find Retroman. Shouldn't make too much difference.

if post production is shorter than the movie will nto look the best.

i want enough time to finish this baby.

This was pretty much the plan anyway, wasn't it?

I know other filming has started, but principal in April I guess........

Retro on the case again:woot:

This shouldn't effect release date or the teaser trailer

maybe its filming that actually involves the actors that starts in April. it makes sense that they'd start with most of the stunt scenes first (i.e. Tumbler sequences) effects shots, CG plates, etc. etc. and I agree that the whole Rachel hiccup is a reason for the delay as well.

Just one month is not too much of a delay, probably won´t change the release date.

this could hurt the quality of the movie IMO.

Um, back 3 months ago, courtesy of BOF:-

"Crewing"
Author: Jett
Wednesday, November 8, 2006 - 6:05 AM, 11:00 AM: UK insider "Mr. J" tell us that the word is that TDK will not be "crewing" until March. He's not sure if that meant that principle filming wouldn't start a bit later than the March date we've been hearing...

Ledger isn't going to start filming for TDK until May/June anyway (another report somewhere confirmed it). So everything is on schedule...

We've waited this long for them to start, whats another month?

Can't wait for '08.

where was it ever set in stone to start in March? Hey maybe it was to start on March 31st, and now they're starting it on April 1st.

well i always thought filming was in april anyway..i read that on caines web site..he doesn't start until april..perhaps thats where they got it from.

There is no delay, I'm sure this was the plan all along.......

either way its schedules the same as begins was.

begins-started principle filming march 04-opened june 05
tdk-starts principle filming in april 07-opens july 08.

People are forgetting TDK opens a full month after Begins did. This isn't an unexpected move.

AND they've been in pre-prod for months, and much of the set and assessories are built already. we've got our dent. everything's fine.

Spider-Man 2 started shooting in April and opened in the beginning of July if memory serves me.

sometimes, it hard to determine the principle photography sometimes, unless it's announced like with Narnia 2. sometimes, it meshes with the pre so I wouldn't be surprised if it was late Marach to early April, you know.
