Films that should be Remade/Rebooted

^^ The Last Starfighter could be ****ing awesome!

I'll go ahead and throw Enemy Mine in there was well. Also, I've been dying to see an Altered States remake for YEARS! And, it's one film I don't think there would be much worry over it turning into some overblown action film. Videodrome would be dope too but, I don't know if they could capture the same feeling that movie had. It'd get over blown way too easy

Ah yeah, Enemy Mine. Remember that one. That could be cool too.

Reboot Transformers.

and do-over The Matrix sequels and Star Wars prequels while your at it.

Not saying I don't agree with you but... those things aren't going to happen, at least not any time soon.

They are rebooting transformers:cwink:
Looking at possibly the most successful reboot ever and that's relative to MOS/ASM.
Probably going to take back the june record for opening too.

I could see them going back into the matrix at some point. New cast same world.

If it's a reboot then why is the title Transformers FOUR and the continuity the same as TF 1-3? :yay:

While I somewhat can understand that people who wasn't around when movies like Back to The Future and Ghostbusters came out would like a remake of them, I certainly don't. Please let those cinema classics alone for at least a coupla decades.

It's about what could be made into a successful and engaging reboot given the brand and premise. Not so much what's actually warranted.

Would rebooting those films today work if done correctly?

I personally don't really want a BTTF remake but given the right team(spielberg) it could be something interesting and I'm sure the new adolescents would be on board. Berg probably would have used shia back in the day(for better or worse).

Forest Gump is what I'd call a leave it alone, the former's, not so much.

Continuity is irrelevant. Superman returns was a "reboot" and...

As for the number four, I thought all the TF films were of the colon in title nomenclature. Unlike Amazing Spiderman Part two, this next film is called Transformers Age of Extinction. All that '4' talk was marketing stuff. Shrewd to a point.

That being said, it's been called a soft reboot often.

I doubt Spielberg would re-boot his own property unless it sunk(like Jurassic Park). BTTF's sequels aren't that ill received. Also, BTTF has no reason for a reboot. Maybe in a few decades, but it's still relevant and relate-able.

I like the idea of remaking films that had potential, but didn't live up to it.

One could say the same about this string of Verhoeven remakes. The experience of Jpark seems more present than BTTF in the minds of the film demographic these days. Can't speak for everyone though.

I just think given the premise and the trends these days, that one might be up. And it wouldn't actually be all that bad. I think of it this way: A back to the future "coming next summer" poster goes up in theaters and people will be talking. Mostly because of how the brand and premise operate.

They're rebooting Zorro and Batman again, I don't think anything is off limits.

Sailor Moon.
Battletech.
Exo Squad.

The nintendo cinematic universe.
Mortal Kombat.

Novel: Glasshouse, or anything by Charles Stross.

If Superman Returns came out 3 years after Superman 2 and had the same director with posters that said Superman 3, it would very much be a sequel.

Bay only labeled TF4 a reboot to avoid franchise fatigue from movie goers. But it's a sequel even more than The Bourne Legacy. Bay isn't fooling anyone.

Put me in the "HELL YES" category for seeing new versions of LAST STARFIGHTER and ENEMY MINE. Though with LS I'd actually be interested in a sequel rather than a reboot. I mean, gaming culture is mainstream culture now, not just the province of lonely dreamers in RV parks. Make it that there is a new version of the LS game coming out and there is a big pro-gamer tournament, run by a C. Arthur Tarry (Centauri, natch) who is again up to his tricks looking for recruits. We see that Alex has actually become the head of the Star League's Starfighter Academy and a new threat now requires more recruits. Boom. Again, gaming being so prevalent now, we'd actually end up with a squad of Terran Starfighters, all training at the Academy under one of Grig's offspring. Get a Joe Johnston type to direct. Make it both light and fun, with thrilling old school adventure. Make the characters real young people and not just cliché's we've seen a billion times in the recent era of cinema. Alex's life as a trying his best, decent but directionless young man is way more appealing to me than the way youthful people are often portrayed on screen too often today.

What is interesting about ENEMY MINE is that it's already a quasi-remake of the film HELL IN THE PACIFIC. It's always been a favorite of mine, both touching and badass at the same time. I would love to see a director that can handle drama well take a stab at it, because I think the film is really a forgotten gem. My choice would be Joe Carnahan. But this would not be an over bloated epic. It should be kept small.

I think I'd love to see one of my favorites done again. LADYHAWKE is a fantastic fantasy film that is well thought of by many, but really, not that well known. The question is could you do it today in a way where, like in the original, it's the characters that matter, not the fantasy elements taking over. Honestly I could see this being done by a Brad Bird type, who can do action adventure and handle the love story of cursed people and the tale of a thief and a knight becoming friends.

A film that oozes potential that is wasted in the actual finished project is QUIGELY DOWN UNDER. To me it's a case of one element screwing up the whole thing. In the film Tom Selleck looks grand and gives a good performance as the title character. Alan Rickman is of course good as the villain of the piece, and in the first half of the film Quigley does some great badass stuff. My favorite is throwing Rickman's character right out of his own house. But the flow of the picture in the second half is nowhere as good as the first when we were getting to know Quigley, and frankly the worst part of the film is Laura San Giacomo's "Crazy Cora". What ever the screenwriter thought was going to work in the final product with that character just does not work. She doesn't work as comic relief or dramatically. Cutting her out and giving Quigley and the villain more development would aid this film immensely. Well, it's been many, many a year and the potential of the original could finally be met. I say cast Hugh Jackman as THE HEAVY and not the hero, give some meat for him to chew on and get Jon Favreau to direct. He's got to get back up on the horse again, and it might as well be a western to get him over COWBOYS AND ALIENS underperforming.

being dated was the appeal; well that and Jason Alexander. but i'd love a remake. same with Slaughter High and Curtains.

I just didn't like it, I heard how good it was and I was honestly bored. It wasn't on the same level as Friday the 13th or My Bloody Valentine for me.

Logan's Run

Yes this is crying out for a reboot.

One day i would like to see another different take on Superman that was more like the golden age material, the fleisher cartoons and Morrison's run. If everything goes as planed for DC's Cinematic Universe, then this would probably happen after a Crisis type of event movie.

Would like to see Disney doing another Rocketeer movie.

I wanted them to make Rocketeer into an animation after that one that was done online.

None of the other TF films have had a number associated with them. Those (teaser) posters seem more indicative of the studio wanting to retain association with their red hot brand than anything else. The early tron legacy media had a 2.0 associated with it, not so much the film campaign itself.

These kinda 'reboots' where a new cast moves forward in the same continuity with the same producers/directors is kinda the way I view StarTrek/PowerRanger franchise reboots. I'm more interested in what something is and it's purpose, than what people think it is. If you move the Tron reboot as is to 5 years after the original and continued that universe with a Bridges covered in aged make up what is now that time as been removed..

Is it time between films? Is it creative heads involved? Is it regard for continuity? Is it cast? Is it characters? Is it title? Is is all of the above...

All these films come with a set of circumstances, how you define them says alot about where you fall in this discussion:
StarTrek 2009
Bourne Legacy
Xmen first Class
Terminator 3
Terminator Salvation
TMNT2007(see canister)
Doctor Who regeneration
StarWars Prequels
21 Jumpstreet
Rise...Planet of...Apes
Prometheus(long time same director)
Highlander2
Highlander3
"Home Alone 4"
Various Zordon involved/non involved power rangers restarts.
Godzilla 2014(see continuity and characters)
Texas ChainSaw 3D(39 years between sequel)
The Wicker Tree
"Carrie 2"

The point being, the definitions seem vague in this day and age.

It's an interesting thing what constitute a 'reboot'. In the world of franchise, reboot is no longer synonymous with 'remake'. Dictionary definitions would assert the word 'revive'. The simple fact is there are various forms or reboots these days and bay himself referred to the thing as a 'soft reboot'. This exact film, 20 years later and with a new director and the issue would be less confusing, but that shouldn't change the truth of the matter.

Transformers: Age of Extinction is more like Star Trek: The Next Generation than Star Trek 2009.

It's connected with the last films, but with new humans, there are many important characters from the first film that didn't return for the sequels, yet those were not reboots. It's more of a rebrand this time around, the universe is the same, but Bay wants to make a new fresh start.

I went and saw these 2 movies when they first came out in 1975:

'Doc Savage: The Man Of Bronze' starring Ron Ely

'The Land That Time Forgot' starring Doug McClure

Both should be remade and kept in their prospective time periods. 1930's for Doc and 1916 for 'Time Forgot'.

While I somewhat can understand that people who wasn't around when movies like Back to The Future and Ghostbusters came out would like a remake of them, I certainly don't. Please let those cinema classics alone for at least a coupla decades.

Agreed, some movies are such that they should never be remade.

Good call! I've always found it funny that there's only three years between Logan's Run and Alien, still the former feels at least a decade more dated visually than the timeless (well, apart from the usual computer screen stuff lol) Alien.

IMHO, Logan's Run would actually be quite interesting to see with today's sci-fi design. It's a really cool story. A cameo from Michael York would be gold as well here. :woot:

Yeah I love the move but it's certainly a dated one but one with such a good concept that I'd welcome a remake

Legend (in a modern day setting)

A modern day take on The Breakfast Club.

Hell yes to Quigley Down Under! I loved that movie as a kid!
