First Look at Loki and Odin

You got your Kirby designs. And though I have no problem with the designs, look at how many people say they look ridiculous.
who? I see ALOT of people liking the costume.
I've shown several friends and they love the look.

Well, on here, at least, it seems like reactions to the costumes are more split than for anything else we've seen or heard about the movie so far. Plenty of us like them--the majority, I'd say--but several more than the usual naysayers are turning up to say they dislike them, too.

I'm confused as to how people hate them so much, personally. They're ripped pretty much straight from the comics. Even the gold on Loki's costume reminds me of the crazy, interwoven patterns of his Simonson-era costume. People seem to have gotten way too hung up on the idea that the Asgardians would all be wearing leather and look like they spent most of their time wallowing in dirt or something...

Come on Corp, do you really believe that most of the people that are complaining were expecting the Asgardians to look like they belong in the 13th Warrior or something?

C'mon man.....

Even in the screen caps from the comics that were posted, the Asgardians had a bit of an old world viking and techno armorish look.

The bottom line is that Thor and the Asgardians lends itself so well and so easily to the sword and sorcery approach, LOTR, Gladiator approach that it simply boggles the mind that this is what we got--especially after getting so excited for what we were initially led to believe...it was a no-brainer...but I digress....

Look, fine, you want to stick in some techno-viking OK, it's part of the Kirby era and I honestly can dig that, but can we please at least make the costumes look.....how can I say it?......less tacky or cheap looking--especially compared to how great IM, Hulk and Spidey came out. Come on, paying homage to the Kirby era is great and all, but you mean to tell me they couldn't give them better costumes that what we got?

Dude come on, I know you're not blind, so there's no way in hell you can tell me that those costumes are drop dead stunning, or that they nailed it in the same vein as IM, etc., etc. If you want to be optimistic, hey power to you, can't really hold that against you or anyone else that wants to take that approach. But come one man.......really, just look at those costumes.......are those really some awe inspiring regal designs to you...?

I mean honestly......lets keep it real, are those costumes really that impressive to you?

I think they are pretty impressive, IMO it would of been pretty well....weird if the costumes looked exactly like the comics counterparts.

Uh, yeah, they are. That's kind of why I've been saying as much repeatedly for the past two days. The costumes look like a melding of various versions from the comics with an emphasis on the crazy, elaborate patterns in Kirby and Simonson's designs, especially. They're not what I initially expected after Branagh and others played up the fantasy/Shakespearean aspects of the character, but once I got over that initial change in expectations, I came to like them a lot.

And I'm not sure why I shouldn't believe that many people are disappointed because the Asgardians don't look like something out of The 13th Warrior. People have been leveling that exact complaint--using that exact movie as reference, no less--since we got the first concept art of Thor's full costume design about a month ago. People are still leveling that same criticism at the costumes now, as if a full month wasn't enough for them to get over it and deal with the fact that the designers simply chose not to go that route. It's the complaint I see most often, so it's the one I addressed.

Others claim the costumes look like cheap plastic, but I'm not sure how many more ways I can state that they don't to me. I don't even know how to address that complaint further because I simply don't think they look cheap when I look at them. They look as impressive as any professionally made movie costumes I've seen. Granted, I'm not exactly a full-time film critic or anything, so maybe my opinion isn't quite as well informed as others', but I know what I like and don't like when I see them and I find I like the look of these costumes quite a lot.

After all, the look of the characters doesn't necessarily determine the tone of the movie itself. The costumes are a little bit campy--as anything that tries to adapt so directly from the comics will wind up being--but given Branagh's reputation and the caliber of the actors involved, I have no doubt that the movie itself will be as epic as Thor deserves. At the end of the day, the costumes are just the window-dressing. While I do like them, I'm still far more interested in seeing some scenes from the film and learning what kind of tone the movie will have overall. I'm especially interested in seeing Hiddleston's portrayal of Loki.

Thor is nicely designed from the waist up, although the no-helmet thing seems to me a half-assed attitude from the designing team, who certainly just thought: "Helmets? Ouch, drop it!", in a Tim Gunn sort of attitude.

Odin is nice.

Loki is a disgrace, I mean, visually. It is a Thor version in green, and where Thor's costume displays round patterns, his is all about angles and stuff.

Kirby wasn't timid: even if these costumes borrow some of his imagination, they were toned down so much that when it came to the bad guy it has become simply FLAT, with the possible excuse of not making a clear statement that he is the bad guy.

The best examples of translation to the cinema, in visual terms, are still Spidey and Iron Man: in their design there was no holding back the visual power of their iconic costumes.

It won't ruin Thor if we get a good movie, in terms of acting and writing, but it would have been much better IF the costumes were spot-on.

Not quite what I was expecting to be honest (the picture I mean)..

I don't know really howto describe it, but the general look doesn't look that much far off from what Smallville's Absolute Justice outfits were like.. which was ok for TV & it got the job done, but for a big film like this I was kinda expecting it to look abit better & as if they'd put some money into the design.

Well To me the costume borrows from all the Costumes. I personally wanted to see what was in Ages of Thunder in the past and the new Coipel design in the present.
I honestly like the movie costumes.

There ARE Helmets, we just haven't seen them yet, which does seem a bit odd that they haven't shown them yet.

If Kmart sells something like these I buy them ALL

Where was this from? Very cool though. I like the way the texture on Thor's arms look in this shot.

the pic is from Entertainment Weekly magazine

The PROBLEM here is that they LOOK like costumes. Nothing about them reads as if they have been worn except in these shots. I mean, if your going to suggest a "God" requires armor then your suggesting he does battle and takes on damage. Where is the battle scars on this armor? Why do they look like they just came off the hanger? Because they did!!

I always envisioned it to look like 13th Warrior or LOTR, but I like this too. They look like superheroes. They look kinda Kirby-esque.

Not all that worried about the helmets. I'm sure they would wear them if in a fight.

Yeah I wanted to see a 13th warrior/ LotR film too CK

I like what they did with the costumes. I'm sure it will look even better on film. I can honestly say I'm onboard with how they went about with the suits. It seems very fitting to the tone.:woot:

That is Awsome

Thors gear looks trully metalic there not hint of platic

Seriously the lighting does wonders

I cant understand what people are complaining about. Just look at Odin! His costume looks so imperius and regal! And I love the kirby-esque influence on all the costumes. And about the helmets, we`ve seen Heimdall with his so you cant tell me theyre giving him one and not the rest! Chill out guys, this film is gonna rock!

Is it my imagination, or is Loki having long hair, sleekly or pony-tailed? If so, it suit him.

Thats "Godly" armour. It's for fighting other Gods.

The more I look at the photo the more I hate it. I do think that it is silly to write the movie off because of one photo though, it could just be one really s**tty promo shot.
