First look: Prequel gets its claws into Wolverine
By Scott Bowles, USA TODAY

As if a guy with temper issues, iron blades for fingernails and a penchant for cage fighting needed it, Wolverine is about to get even surlier.

"I know it seems odd given, you know, the guy is already half animal," says Hugh Jackman, who revives the character in Wolverine, due in theaters May 1, 2009. "But with all the success of the X-Men, you feel the pressure to keep pushing it further."

Jackman, also a producer on the film, says he never expected the story of mutants trying to fit in "to catch on the way it did." (Since the first film hit screens in 2000, the X-Men franchise has taken in more than $1.1 billion worldwide.) "But I became a fan of Wolverine like everyone else. That's why I keep holding on to the character."

Wolverine will be a prequel to the X-Men saga. It will center on the origins of the superhero with animal-like reflexes, an alloy skeletal system and the ability to heal from virtually any wound. He also could use a friend.

"I think one of the reasons the X-Men took off is that it connected in a way nobody saw," Jackman says. "They're mutants with powers. But they're also outcasts for being, and everyone connects with that on some level. And who wouldn't want the power to get back at the people who ostracized you?"

The film will trace Wolverine's past as he discovers the world of mutants and, ultimately, the ominous Weapon X program, which turns people into living weapons.

Jackman is tight-lipped on plot details, though he says the film will hardly be a one-mutant story.

Wolverine's nemesis Sabretooth "is going to play a big part in it. And there will be a good bit of cameos" of new and familiar mutants, he says. "But you can't give too much away, because fans are pretty hard-core. Their expectations go up a level every time you come out with a new film."

I freaked out, I thought there'd be an official photo in this thread, lol.

Good article. I wanna know about all the cameos...now! :p

Edit: HOLY CRAP

Haha. I was about to say me too, and then you updated with a picture. The picture looks like it was done by the same individuals who worked on some of the promo pictures for The Last Stand.

Hmmm... the background... a hint of things to come???

I just noticed that too. Wow... :wow:

****ing right finally a return too glory for this once sadly lost franchise. Brett Ratner may u burn in hell. Long live the savage canadian beast of a man. And yes Hugh looks like he is jacked to the ****ing extreme. I hope Gavin spins this movie into a ferocious beauty of awesomeness. God I thank you for the day you whispered those sweet words into bryan singers ears. Hugh Jackman....epiphany!!!!

I also like how the claws now extend all the way into his wrists. Just BEAutiful. One of the purest comic to film images I have ever seen. Could have been a wolvie cover. Gavin Hood is a fine director may he shape this into a brutal and kick ass film. Now where is X-Men 4 starring colossus, ice man, gambit, angel, kitty, and hell why not bring back kelsy for one more spin. He was about the only thing the rat ****er got right in X3

I can die happy.

I've finally seen what a live action Wolvie should look like.

Saw a glimpse of it in X-2 in the mansion fight. But this here is the genuine article, Pure animal rage and ferocity.

Thank you Hugh Jackman.

Agreed totally on the highlighted point.

As to the picture, it is possibly one of the best promotional shots i have seen for a movie, a superb picture, this and the HBII picture in Empire of HB holding Nuada by the neck.

2 of the best promo pics ever!

hame4479, why do you assault Ratner so much when in fact Jackman was producing X3 and thought of it as the best of the trilogy?

Perhaps during your post you forgot that Jackman played Wolverine in X3 and clearly was the film's real "Beast of a Man" - not Grammer (which I still enjoyed).

I really don't understand the general negativity towards X3 when presented in a Wolverine movie thread. I mean the guy was in the movie. Bigger, hairier and chopping up more people than he did in X2. I wonder if the X3 haters were so obsessed with knocking Ratner that they failed to notice Hugh doing what he does best...

Because the man ruined the concept of the film. When I hear what singers version would have been, sentinals, hellfire club, a pheonix very much like the one I know and love than I can only hate any one who was artistically in charge of such a calamity. Hugh was the best thing about that film aside from Kelsy being cast as beast, everything else was weak. And weak is a very forgiving word. Hugh tried, I honestly had no idea he was a producer or maybe I would have been more critical of him, but honestly the way fox rushed the film they truly doomed it to the ridiculous crap it was. So you are right Brett Rattner your films well.......they still suck but X3's ultimate failure really falls into the hands of those absolutely clueless fox execs and Zak Penn you basterdizer of Marvel legend.

The best picture I've ever seen of Hugh Jackman as Logan - utterly fantastic. He's bulked up so much the proportions of the comic book Logan are more in sync, despite Hugh being so much taller. Really thrilled with that.
