Flash Gordon Animated Film | Taika Waititi

its going to be Chris Pratt, isn't it?

I’d love a new Flash Gordon movie but, ugh, Disney’s not going to go ahead with this when they have Star Wars and Guardians.

Don't see why not? Just because they have the other two doesn't mean they can't milk Flash Gordon as well. He and his name were synonymous with sci-fi. They could have another hit franchise on their hands. Why not take advantage of that?

Who owns Buck Rogers though? Is it Universal? I'd love to see a modern version of that.

Because like John Carter, it’s been mined and re-invented into those other two franchises they’ve been making hit movies with.

I just can’t see Disney jumping at the bits to make it while Fox would’ve jumped at the chance since they lost Star Wars. I’m not saying Disney won’t, it’s just probably not even close to what they’re focusing on. It probably had a better chance at Fox.

Nice to see that the project is going forward.

:whatever: Rolling eyes at the "heard it's hardcore" in the Tweet, "hardcore" what ?

Disney just had Taika do their Flash Gordon movie for them.

It...turned out pretty well. Doubt this sees the light of day, much as I loves me some pulpy Flash Gordon type of stuff. Pretty sure they learned their lesson with Carter - if it's not a part of the MCU, people aren't going to give a ****, this type of tone doesn't really fly with the cool kiddies for the most part.

Wasn't Bryan Singer once attached to a remake of Buck Rodgers?
Hold on, no, it was Logan's Run. My mistake.

I could see Flash Gordon as a Disney+ project. Either as a movie or series.

Frank Miller was attached to direct Buck Rogers like a decade ago. He was going to make it in the style of Sin City. Then The Spirit happened.

The real question with this is, who should do the score? That’s going to be the real winning ticket. Please no generic classical music

Oh no please no

Sin City doesn't seem remotely suited to Buck Rogers.

I wouldn't mind a new TV series. Maybe a little less campy than the 70s show, but still fun like that. I'm all for having Princess Ardala and Tiger Man, or Twiki, and definitely Col. Wilma Deering.

Taika Waititi To “Crack” ‘Flash Gordon’ As Fox/Disney Animated Film

Fox/Disney has attached Thor: Ragnarokdirector Taika Waititi to “crack” Flash Gordon, as an animated feature film.

I had heard that the inventive filmmaker Waititi was signing on to write and direct, but his camp indicates it’s too early to gauge exactly what his role would be.

Flash Gordon has been in development for what seems like ages — Kingsman‘s Matthew Vaughn and Overlorddirector Julius Avery are the most recent filmmakers to align with the project — but an animated film is an intriguing way to tackle an iconic property that slipped into the cheesy category thanks to a 1980 film that starred Sam Jones and Max Von Sydow and had a memorable theme song and soundtrack by Freddie Mercury and Queen.

Wow that is interesting. I'd definitely watch something like that in the vein of Incredibles or Into the Spiderverse.

I just want Jemaine Clement as Vultan in live-action now though.

Very interesting. Ragnarok was basically a version of Flash Gordon.
Regarding Flash Gordon he seems to be a big fan of that movie since he made all of his heads of department for Ragnarok watch that movie before filming. It was clearly a big source of inspiration.

I'm on board with anything Taika Waititi is attached to. An animated version of FG... Sure.

I was hoping they'd get Josh Trank to do a dark, grounded and gritty found footage version of Flash Gordon with very little fun or humour.

I don't see how you make Flash Gordon work in 2019, especially without people complaining about it.

Which bit? Ming the Merciless?

Ming the Merciless, Flash himself, the female characters, etc.

Also what style do you choose? Do you make it light, campy and fun? Do you make it super serious? Do you do it like Guardians? But if it's like Guardians or Thor: Ragnarok, how do you pull that off without it being called a ripoff? Do you play it straight? How do you make it work so it's profitable?

I think someone else made a good point. The Flash Gordon movies have already sort of been done and the material has been mined by the likes of Guardians and Thor: Ragnarok for contemporary audiences.

What does Flash Gordon even have going for it at this point other than an old brand name that kids and young people today couldn't even give two ****s about?

Wasn’t there a show on Syfy that was supposed to be a dark grounded reboot?

In no way was the show dark. It was a more grounded though. A lot of it was still set on Earth. But it was also dirt cheap. The Hawkmen looked like garbage.

I might have a vague recollection of that now that you mention it, but don't really remember it at all.
