Downey is definitely the primal force behind these films. Without him, it's just another superhero movie.
Agreed. Personally speaking, I had little interest in Iron Man - or an Iron Man movie - until I read the news that Robert Downey Jr had been cast as Tony Stark. He's one of my favorite actors, one of the finest of his generation, so his name alone sold the film for me.
Rourke is a tremendous actor, and one who will intimidate no matter what his outfit is. I don't think they want to rehash the same old power suit badguy, as we've already been there.
Another good point. People talk about the potential mismatch of Iron Man VS Whiplash, but I look at it in terms of Robert Downey Jr VS Mickey Rourke. That's an acting dream match for me.
I also wonder what (if any) roll the 10 rings will have to play in the next film. I keep feeling that Madarin is lurking in the background behind all this, to be revealed for a 3rd movie.
Over on the "Sam Rockwell Is Justin Hammer" thread, someone made a great observation - like the terrorist leader, like Obidiah Stane, Justin Hammer wears a big ring on his pinky finger. So maybe this could tie into your theory.
