From THE CHAMPIONS to THE ORDER

This book should level out in the 60s and 70s hopefully.

good stuff

Currently, issue #3 sold at 33k, which is slightly less tha Fraction's other book, IMMORTAL IRON FIST, and WAY less than PUNISHER WAR JOURNAL. It had slipped 13% from issue #2's sales.

November's sales should be in eventually, and then we can see where things are.

And that image with the turtle above is one example of some of the subtle humor at play here. "I only star in disaster pictures" indeed.

Aralune's ordeal unfortunately was not so uncommon these days.

I wasn't too clear on whether Becky knew the tape existed or not. If she allowed herself to be filmed, she really has no one to blame but herself. If not, then the guy is victimizing her and should be kicked in the head.

I thought Fraction established that. She's not the sharpest knife in the drawer, but she means well and she genuinely wants to help people and make a difference.

She's also probably hoping Kate can pull a miracle out of her ass. I can't really find much sympathy for Becky in this situation, though. She made her bed, now she has to lay in it.

And yes, I know there are about a dozen "laid" jokes I could've used in there, but I am a gentleman. :o

I get the feeling that Becky's been a doormat for basically her entire life, much of that stemming from her father, so I really don't feel bad for her dad at all.

Becky, as Kate rather bluntly put it, has had her sexuality exploited for her entire life (it same up in her intro issue). First by her father and then by her "animal" of whoever boyfriend she slept with. Yeah, she isn't the sharpest knife in the kitchen, y'all, but when given the chance to do something where she calls the shots, she does want to do the right thing.

She isn't perfect, but she is a good person at heart and when given the chance to be a hero, so far has taken it. That is what The Order is about, presenting characters whose faults make them human and yet they are, deep down, heroes. Or at least trying very hard to be, in their own way.

Aralune pretty much does what other people tell her to do; even to the point of being a superhero sometimes. Which is why her power, to shapeshift into whatever she wants, is ironic.

Also, "making a sex tape" seems to be something that kinky guys talk their lovers into doing, aparently. Becky probably knew she was filmed with the cell at the time, but may have forgotten, or presumed that her BF wouldn't save it on his cell for months/years until she hit it big, just to score some cheap bucks off of it. After all, this is the same girl who won't admit her father exploited her since childhood.

If being a bit dim and naive made you unsympathetic, then The Hulk has never been sympathetic. :p

Becky's the opposite of Veda, really, who is strong, confident, smart, and determined.

And I really, really, REALLY hope the Skrulls and SECRET INVASION stay away. I know I repeating myself, but F it. If THE ORDER is doomed to be axed by issue #12 due to sales, than creating a temporary spike of 5-15k sales with a tie-in really won't do anything to change that, and I'd rather Fraction, Kitson, Evans & Co. make the most of every issue they DO get.

I agree with everything except for the last part. I think I've changed my mind about wanting The Order to tie into the Skrull story. If it can make the book jump up a few slots to hold off cancelation for another 6-12 months, then I'm all for it.

Tying into WWH didn't help ANT-MAN. It won't help GHOST RIDER out of it's slide into oblivion.

All I see SECRET INVASION doing for THE ORDER is distracting from the main story and forcing Fraction to sacrifice one of his characters sooner than he may want to. Unless, of course, the M.A.N. from S.H.A.D.O.W. is some Skrull mole with Fed power. But that seems like a cop out.

I really, really, really doubt that a boost of sales of 10-15k, which is about the most anyone could realistically expect for a SI crossover on a title that is currently selling 33k, will matter to THE ORDER's status for very long. ANT-MAN saw an over 100% boost in sales from the WWH issue, but with 2 to go, you didn't see one editor go, "Hmm, maybe we should give it some extra time now". Nope.

Like RUNAWAYS, THE ORDER seems to be working best when allowing its creators to play in their sandbox, rather than having to follow editorial decrees. When the RUNAWAYS finally decided to play in CW, it was in a mini, not their own title, because Vaughan was doing his thing. Granted, one could argue Marvel probably did that because the digests sold very well unto themselves and Marvel probably wanted to continue fooling the world that RUNAWAYS was a self-contained manga-ish title, but whatever worked.

I see a theme to THE ORDER, a budding subplot and storyline, and I'd rather seen that unfettered. I like the title a lot, but a steroid injection of sales for a month or two really, really won't do a damned thing for it's long term health. The sales will evaporate as soon as they came and suddenly Fraction may find himself with 1-2 fewer issues to wrap up a run with.

I suppose someone could point to Brubaker's CAPTAIN AMERICA as the best example of how to get lumped into an event while still running with a solo's theme and storylines, but CA is a different fish. Cap is fully part of the mainstream Marvel Universe; leader of the Avengers, symbol, all that. He HAD to be included in CW. The Order are spunky new heroes in Cali.

Hopefully Jason Aaron will make it readable again. His name is certainly not enough to carry a book, but maybe it'll get some good word of mouth.

Heh, nice wordplay. :)

Thanks. I actually wasn't even trying. It just came out.

He'll maybe get 6 issues from after Way's run, and by then it should be off the Top 100 and canceled, regardless of how good, bad, or mediocre it is. Least that is my instinct. He'd better be an improvement on Way. If Way wasn't leaving I may've left by now, and if Aaron can't make it work quickly I may not stay long.

Jason Aaron is, for my money, the best writer currently in the business. If he can't make it work, no one can.

I can't recall something he's written off the top of my head.

If he can't make it work better than WAY, then truly no one can. ;)

The fact that Scalped is really good doesn't necessarily mean he can write Ghost Rider, though.

They're both set in the dead west of the U.S. That's pretty much his bread and butter.

He wrote The Other Side and he's currently writing Scalped, both for Vertigo. He did a fill in issue of Wolverine a couple back. He's also doing an upcoming four issue run on that book with Ron Garney.

Yeah, but they're wildly different subject matter otherwise. I'm not saying he won't do a good job, I just don't think it's as foregone a conclusion as you assume. Remember, Bendis had great creator-owned work too.

Oh, I know. Aaron's done a war story, which was excellent, an Indian reservation crime saga, which is brilliant, and a Wolverine done in one which was also excellent. He doesn't seem to be a genre writer by any stretch.

I'd probably read it even if he weren't writing it. Garney's name is enough for me to shell out $3 a month.
