This won’t come as a surprise to anyone who sat through the credits of The Avengers, or who simply looked at the film’s record-breaking box office sales this past weekend. Still, fans (and investors) will be glad to hear that Disney CEO Bob Iger just announced that the company is developing a sequel. The film’s success “is a great illustration of why we like Marvel so much.” Demand for Avengers merchandise has been strong, he added.

That is NOT what Iger said. We're posting the real story. He says he hopes there will be a sequel.

They really need to get Whedon back to write, or at least return to direct the sequel. He did wonders with balancing the cast and giving them each a time to shine.

Whedon's going to want to do his own thing between now and Avengers 2. He'll likely never again have the clout he has now. When Nolan was in this position he made Inception first.

Chewy, if they aim for 2015 for the sequel, how long would that technically give Whedon? Doesn't give him long does it?

Really hope he comes back.

3 years is plenty of time for a sequel. We could get 2-3 new solo movies plus an additional 1-2 new superheroes introduced.

2015 is super-quick as it is. It always cracks me up when people are calling for Avengers 2 in 2014. Oy.

If they go for 2016, make two movies back to back. But that was a disaster either critically and/or financially for the Matrix and Pirates franchises. I feel Avatar 2, 3 back to back is also a mistake. Lord of the Rings was an exception although that was always meant to be one movie.

But 2015 should should be a nice target date to get it done. I'd prefer a mid summer release as opposed to May so the season can sort of build up towards it.

I think Whedon did this whole movie in like a year and half right? wasn't he hired in like August 2010?

He can certainly get 2015. It helps a lot when 3/4 of the movie is likely cast already.

On the back-to-back thing. Just make good movies. It's ridiculous to cite other movies as example of why Avengers would fail. It's a totally different creative team with different vision and goals than Pirates and Avengers.....Pirates and Avengers didn't fail because of the back to back thing, they failed cause they weren't good movies (at least the 3rd ones in both franchises were terrible....I think the 2nd in both were okay)

make good movies.

I wonder what the production budget is going to be the 2nd time around.

I just hope it's 2015 cause RDJ and Ruffalo are getting on, and I hope Joss writes/directs again. And I hope it's got Ant-Man/Wasp. :yay:
