Frozen 2

See to me, it is a play on the trope. Especially as the unconventional narrative of Frozen/Frozen 2 does not really make Kristoff the "romantic lead". Technically he is, but the relationship spotlight is always on Anna and Elsa. They are each others "true love". Yes, Kristoff is a bit worried about being good enough for her, but that is the C-plot and that is played for some laughs and a chance for Kristoff to finally get a song (and what a song it is). We know Anna loves him and she'd say yes in a moment, him being Cinderella be damned.

I find the "shenanigans" clever as they are focus on Anna's insecurities of losing her "happily ever after" from the first film. Anna is preoccupied with trying to not lose her sister again, and that is where her full focus goes. At least twice Kristoff tries to propose, and twice Anna is too concerned with Elsa to notice. That to me works really well, because much like the first film, while it is using a trope, it is using it to advance the main narrative of the film, which focus is not the trope, but the inverse of it. Also I think it is crucial that Kristoff isn't jealous. If there is any "conflict" in their relationship, it is that Anna spends the majority of her time having panic attacks over her sister. But that never crosses Kristoff's mind, because this group is all family, and they care for one another completely. Kristoff continues to be the best Disney boyfriend ever, while the tale itself continues to focus on the main point of it all. The sisters.

It just comes off as a standard use of that trope to me. Yeah, it should about the sisters first and foremost, but that entire subplot felt like badly forced conflict for ''reasons''

Finally got around to seeing this. There were a few aspects of it that I liked (for example, the rock giants looked awesome) but overall I wasn't really impressed. The first movie was far superior in every way. This just seemed like they were trying too hard, especially how most of the songs felt derivative of the songs from the first film save for "Lost in the Woods", which I thought was better than "Into the Unknown", tbh. I also felt like the movie could have used an actual villain (that wasn't an afterthought in a flashback). I get that they aren't necessary for every film but they're sort of a staple for Disney animation.

And the ending where you had the in-your-face sappy tear-jerker moments in rapid succession where Anna sees that Elsa is alive, Olaf comes back to life, and Kristoff proposes to Anna all in the span of about 90 seconds reminded me of this scene from Goldmember:

I had the same reaction Scott did while watching it. :o

Overall it was better than the onslaught of direct to video Disney sequels from the '90s-'00s but nowhere near the standard that they've been setting for the last decade with the first Frozen, Moana, Zootopia, Wreck-It Ralph, etc. I'd put it in the same tier as the recent Disney and Pixar sequels that weren't as good as the originals but just okay nonetheless like Ralph Breaks the Internet and Finding Dory.

I don’t always agree with these Honest Trailers but this one was pretty spot-on for my problems with the sequel.

So...I will finally see this when I buy it on Blu-Ray for my daughter...but every time I give her the choice of this movie on disc or anything else, she chooses anything else. Kind of tells me this movie missed the mark a bit. (further solidifying Tangled's place as the superior film---runs away)

Tangled was great, no need to run lol.

Yeah, having seen both, I much prefer Tangled. It's just put together much better.

I love both Tangled and the first Frozen. I’ll likely be seeing Frozen 2 on Disney + now although I really wanted it catch it in cinemas.

They are potentially forgoing tens of millions of dollars in blu ray and digital sales. I get that D+ doesn't have a wealth of content and they need to put something out to keep people around but I'm not so sure this is that great of a decision. But then again desperate times call for desperate measures.

Not really worried about Disney losing tens of millions of dollars.

They are forgoing loads of income but at least the streaming platform is very important too. Netflix is creating so much content at the moment and it’s not getting a theatrical or physical home release. Long term exclusive content for the streaming platform is a major deal, although that said shows are more cost efficient than films given they keep subscribers busy for much longer. Still, a physical Frozen 2 would likely have been a very popular gift for birthdays and Xmas.

Yeah they have this service now and the important thing is to build up your subscriber base as much as possible.

Yep. The monthly subscriber model for a digital product (cheap and low risk to attain scale) is what allowed Netflix to go from nothing to overtaking the net worth of some film studios that have been around for decades who had such a massive headstart on content and also many other revenue streams. There is nothing like it in business as it adds predictability to income as well as being massive. Compare that to the unpredictability of box office grosses, especially outside franchises like the MCU.

Something really weird just happened with my post people are quoting some I'm posting it again:

Not sure what was happening but Iceman's reply was coming up as written by me. ????

I accidentally double-posted and my original post was wrong and didn’t have all the info of the 2nd post so I deleted it. Maybe that might have contributed to the mistake, sorry. :)

All good. Was really weird though, lol.

Rewatched it last night. What can I say? I still love it, and it still tops the first Frozen by a small margin for me, if only because it has substantially fewer trolls. The Songs are awesome, Elsa is fantastic and Olaf is hilarious.

Finally watched Frozen 2. VERY forgettable to me. It was okay. I mean, nothing direct-to-video bad, but it was a very beautiful movie with some decent music and a light plot. Olaf was the best part by far!

Not bad at all, but still...no Tangled.

I regret not seeing this in the theaters. I loved it, though I can see where the disappointment can come from. Disney, being Disney, probably held back the message of the movie a bit.

Gad is gonna do about 20 shorts during quarantine animated from home by the Disney vfx team,

Watching this for like the 10 time or something. The songs really do grow on ya. More so then even the first film's ones imo. If I had to pick, and thankfully I don't, I'd probably pick the music from the sequel at this point.

Did anyone else watch the Making Of Frozen 2 on Disney+? I was fascinated by the whole series: it explains a lot about not just the making of this movie, but of Disney animated movies in general. It also shows just how difficult it was to create Show Yourself, which I guess explains why that song, despite initially being designed as the new Let It Go, ultimately took a backseat compared to Into The Unknown.
