A buddy movie with Action Man?!
by Stax

US, March 7, 2007 - Producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura has revealed that Skip Woods (Hitman, Swordfish) is writing the screenplay for the live-action feature film version of G.I. Joe. Woods reportedly segued to the project after completing rewrite work on Live Free or Die Hard.

But fans should expect the G.I. Joe movie to be G.I. Joe in name only -- if the name is used at all. "Do you know Action Man? Action Man is the equivalent of G.I. Joe internationally pretty much. It's a different character, but pretty much the same idea and his name is Alex Mann. So we're creating a buddy movie between Duke and Alex. That's what we're doing," di Bonaventura told LatinoReview.com.

"All the characters will be there, and it'll be really fun but unfortunately our president has put us in a position internationally where it would be very difficult to release a movie called G.I. Joe internationally in a lot of places. I'm a big G.I. Joe fan and to add one character to the mix is sort of a fun thing to do."

The producer added that "Snake Eyes is a really difficult character" to translate to film and that the filmmakers will probably include Heavy Duty rather than Roadblock.

Di Bonaventura's biggest problem is with how to bring the Joes' adversaries, Cobra Command, to the screen. "If you saw Cobra executed the way that it's executed in the animation and in the comic book onscreen you would laugh, I believe."

He also reiterated that he wants Mark Wahlberg to play Duke.

I know we already have a Gi Joe thread and i will merge eventually but i thought this needed it's own thread for now, personally i think this news sucks:csad:

Shouldn't the anti-Bush people be happy about this.

I guess the feeling is that a true to spirit GI JOE would be too "patriotic" or jingoistic. And people don't like that at all.

Now Hollywood, if that's the feeling, then you better cease all development right now on Captain America.

it's not because it's "too patriotic" it's because the rest of the world isnt exactly going "go US military supremism!" right now, and the film wouldnt do well at all in foriegn markets...it's about money, not politics

I can see where they wouldn't want to market the name "G.I. Joe" on a global scale right now.

Snake Eyes is a really difficult character to translate to film
That's lame.

:ninja: =

This news has to be the lamest thing I heard. The Story is about the G.I. Joe team to get your point across wouldn't the movie need to be called Gi. Joe???
I mean I understand the sequel to batman Begins is called The dark Knight, but people somewhat know the character of batman and his other names or titles.
The only thing I can think of is " A Real American Hero" but I hve mixed feelings about that, because that is only a sub title of sorts.
A buddy movie??? That is what has got me worried.

Yeah GI Joe looks like US military propoganda...

WHEN YOUR EIGHT YEARS OLD!!!

Since when did the military use ninjas? Or chicks with cross bows?

The concept is pretty much an elseworlds version of the US miilitary and terrorist just like Pirates of the Carribean isn't based in reality. If you made a surreal, tounge-in-cheek "War on Terror" movie with ninjas and cross bows worldwide audiences would go nuts for it. Just keep the characters the same, make it like Big Trouble in Little China mixed with The Rock, and get a director with a wild imagination.

And Snake Eyes could become one of the coolest movie icons in film history. The idea that he wouldn't work in a movie just proves the screenwriters have no clue how to approach the material. Reminds me of TINO aka BayFormers.

I don't buy this at all. GI Joe is popular world-wide.

isn't the overseas version of GI JOE called ACTION FORCE?
the alex mann action man character has NOTHING WHATSOEVER to do with the joes

Based on those Troma should have done G.I. Joe movie in the 80's.

(Yeah, I've never read the comics. I do own like five of them but never got around reading them, or better, finishing 'em. Wasn't my cup of tea.)

I disagree. Transformers kept the basic mythology intact. Unlike this GI Joe movie which appears to be disregarding anything that has come before it.

Action Force was not a version of GI JOE ..... It WAS GIJOE. They simply changed the name because to young children growing up in the uk GI JOE would not have the same impact.

I have EVERY Action Force comic and I have no idea who Alex Mann is??

If he is indeed the character called Action Man then there is little to no link with Gi Joe/Action Force apart from a few high quality toys.

Action Force is not the same as Action Man.

Action Force is not the same as Action Man.

actully it is, the toy of action man, was orginal called gi joe, when it first was released. it was later renamed action man over the years.

the idea was then released again in the 80's only changed in to the smaller gi joe/action force figures.

they are all interconected

Who said the makers of the GI Joe movie were going to disregard everything that has come before it? It sounds like they're going to keep basic premise of the military fighting terrorsit but ruin and distort all the characters until they're almost unrecognizable. Bay kept the premise of transforming robots but made the characters almost unrecognizable and weakened key concepts.

GI Joe is shaping up to be another Bayformers. Hollywood must really hate generation X.

I hope they burn in Hell. :cmad:

I don't like Bush either but that doesn't mean you shouldn't call it GI Joe. It was around before the Bush adminstration and it'll be around after it. If anything, I think a film like GI Joe may help the US image over sea's . Anyway, I hope they get J.J Abbrams to write it.

Action Man may indeed have a link to the name 'Gi Joe' but thats it.

When you think Gi Joe, most people think of Duke, Flint, Destro, Snake-eyes and so on .........

As far as I'm aware Action Man has never been involved in this universe so suddenly bringing him into a movie of all things seems crazy.

Actually this is pretty bad in the scheme of bad decisions.

your taking my post out of context, i never said i agree with the decision, my post was over the simplistic nit picking over a name. you grew up with the product as gi joe, i grew up with it as action force. .the poster i was responding to was moaning that he didnt want action force he wanted gi joe yet its one and the same

i think we're basiclly splitting hair over a name, without action man there wouldnt have been a gi joe/action line. i dont think there has been an offial apperance but i do think one of the orginal action toys was named duke.

i do agree its crazy to try and bring him into it, but again its a nice nod to the older generation who had him as a toy when the rest of us had duke and destro

a least there trying to work him into the mold of the toon and not the other way around

would they rather they had crap like dr X or the new crap based on him ATOM

If this guy thinks Snake Eye would be the hardest to bring to life in a live action movie. Then he simply isn't meant to direct this film at all. :csad::o :down
