G9: The Rainbow Room

Is it strange that I am actually surprised to find out Brian Boitano is gay? He struck me as being one of the most ridiculously hetero skaters in recent memory, him and Elvis Stojko. I always figured he and Stojko were the inspiration behind the character of Chad Michael Michaels in Blades of Glory.
Yes. Then again I follow figure skating and have seen Brian behind the scenes when he's not presenting something for the stodgy skating community. He dressed like a SF gay hipster, and looked easily 10 years younger.

It's a thinly veiled secret that he is/was (man is private after all) dating a Broadway tenor who performed at some of his shows.

In general, it's a good assumption that North American male singles skaters are gay until proven otherwise. The Europeans, flamboyant as they are, are actually up to their necks in girls. :funny:

Happy New Year!

My dad sent a "happy new year" text to me that included spideyboy in it. I am really starting to think that he already knows.

That's adorable. :funny:

One day you're going to tell your dad, and his reaction will be "...and? I mean 'Oh. OHH! No way. Get out of here, man.'"

Agreed, lol, although I find that is one of the most noxious elements of North American culture, that male artistry is considered queer or something. It's very unique to this part of the world: Russia is the most homophobic G8 country, yet even over there, hypermasculinity is equated with things like ballroom dancing, skating and ballet. Not just Europe, Japan and China also don't have these strange attitudes towards male performance art.

I've studied ballroom dancing for a number of years, and I find it annoying that coaches (who usually assume I'm straight) feel the need to censor themselves or make qualifications when taking me through arm or hip movements.

Right. That's why I believe so many American male singles skaters are gay. Macho "straight" guys don't figure skate. There's no such stigma in Europe or Asia.

Amusingly, the best male singles skater in the world today is Canadian and straight, although he is Asian so maybe that doesn't count? :funny: Not like a lot of Asian folks put their kids in hockey.

Yeah, it's tough for me. I really like Patrick Chan, but for the past few years I've had a lot of trouble supporting Canada's skate team, because of Skate Canada's anti-artistic and gender-phobic bent of the past decade or so. :csad:

Needless, to say, there was a LOT of conspiracy talk in the Canadian gay skatefan community about why Jeffrey Buttle dropped out of competitive skating when he was at his peak, and god help me if I still believe some of it.

Really? I honestly believe Jeff was tired of training like he said - Patrick was nipping at his heels (even beat him at Nationals that year) and Jeff had only landed the quad once in competition early in his career, and his triple axel was also always touch and go. Consistent jumps were never his strong suit - he always picked up points in extremely awesome ways that annoyed the crap out of everyone else. :funny: Patrick picked up the quad extremely quickly after Jeff retired, so it was just as well. He obviously enjoys show skating and choreographing and I don't think he regrets retiring before the Vancouver Olympics. The short program Jeff choreographed for Patrick this year is sublime and I'm in heaven every time Patrick performs it.

Besides, it's since been publicized that Jeff currently participates in a gay hockey league, so it isn't like he's locked in some closet. :oldrazz: He's just never talked much about his private life.

I love how I'm geeking out about figure skating here. :funny: Jeff is my favorite male skater ever ever ever and Patrick is up there too and their work together is my dream come true. :awesome:

Yeah, but how awesome would it have been for Canada to have both the gold and silver in men's skating at Sochi. Well, awesome for me, not so much for the Russians.

I love my Jeffie, I really do, but he wouldn't make top 10 at Worlds now without a quad, and at 31, he suddenly wouldn't gain one by magic. A lot of men are doing multiple quads in one program now, and they've tweaked the scoring system so Jeff's usual "rotate but fall on the quad" strategy isn't going to help him much. It's good that he got out when he felt he'd had enough. I'm still torn about Patrick retiring after this season. He's dominated this cycle, he's only 23 and he's just developing some real artistry, but all those jumps wreck your body.

Right now the singles competition is between various Japanese men and Patrick, the lone holdout from Canada. :funny: The only Russian man worth discussing is (still!!!!) Plushenko, and he's very likely too injured to compete in the singles competition. He just had spinal surgery last year, the crazy dude. We'll be surprised if he'll be able to walk when he's 40.

There's currently a ruckus in the figure skating community though, because Plushenko basically announced he'd compete in the team event and then withdraw from injury so another Russian guy can do the individual, and we're like, "Um, I'm pretty sure the first rule of bending the rules like this is not to announce you're bending the rules like this!" :lmao:

Do you follow figure skating itself, Pink Ranger? Or just the Canucks? :yay:

Sorry, I gotta say, I think Meryl and Charlie are gonna beat out Tessa and Scott this time. :oldrazz:

Ah, my reputation precedes me, clearly. ;)

I do follow figure skating somewhat, though your incredibly detailed knowledge puts me to shame. I do pay attention to who's doing what and when, but not as closely as some true fans out there.

For me, figure skating, dancesport and pro wrestling are all on the same sports-entertainment continuum. :)

I like you. Can I be your straight female friend? :funny:

Also, I suppose I follow figure skating way more than the average folk, but there are people out there who even track the junior level and I'm sitting there going, "Who are these kids?" :funny:

Ha ha, of course, you can be one of my swans. :funny: We can do a hilarious montage where we try on wigs and hats to the tune of "Our Lips Are Sealed."

Hello! It's a little dead in here. I'm not on much anymore but I did want to come by and leave some links with you guys.

For a little while now I've been trying to get a little T-shirt company of the ground with my best friend and finally we have some cool stuff to show.

Originally the designs and ideas were going to be marketed to "Brooklyn Queersters" (anyone in NYC knows they took over for a period of time) but we've moved into a more mainstream direction but still keeping that flavor of the original idea.

So I give to you Newyorkshka!

I hope you guys enjoy it, "like" it, share it, purchase some shirts and whatever you want to do with it. We're a people's company so if you have any questions find me or go through the usual modes of contact on our facebook, website and whatever.

Thanks for checking it out, it means a lot to us.

Happy new year, Everyone. Been a while.

[YT]1V8pb-VUJnQ#t=178[/YT] i'd be staring too tom.... i'd be staring too!

Luke Evans came out then jumped back in?,I thought Orlando Bloom was openly bi or gay!?

Luke Evans used to be openly gay and mention it freely in interviews, then he became a little hotter commodity in America with stuff like "Immortals", and all of a sudden he had a pretend fiancee and apparently expected nobody to notice those gay interviews he did years ago in Britain before Americans knew who he was.

A little bit like how Tom Hardy used to blather nonchalantly about how he's banged dudes before and then years later (when his star is on the rise) backtracked and suddenly he was "misquoted", etc.

As for Orlando Bloom though, he's never publicly been anything but straight, he was married to supermodel Miranda Kerr and used to date Kate Bosworth.

You can see Tom struggling to maintain eye contact in that video.

A truly understanding partner would concede that is allowed when animal print speedos are involved. Mel Gibson would sneak a glance.

That's why same-sex couples can do this, in most cases they're BOTH looking at whatever it is they're looking at.
