Gavin Hood to direct Wolverine

It just amazes me that they'd put this kind of talent behind this origin film--which is such a gamble as it is--yet resort to B and C-list talent for HUGE franchises like X-Men and even Fantastic Four.

I don't get the logic.

1. Jackman is a producer for Wolvie, so he probably had a great deal of influence on this hire.

2. As you said, it's a gamble, so put talent behind it to make it work. A big property already has a built in fanbase, so less is needed, in their view, to make it financially successful.

He should be a good choice. Kinda like Bryan Singer once I think about it. Not a real big name but has made a small Oscar winning hit and now doing a comic book movie.

I was Channel surfing and saw that Tsotsi was coming on on Starz. I just watched it and it was a pretty good movie. The Director did a good job of making you like a character who was not a very good person but trying to become one. I think he will so well with Wolverine.

YAY!!! He did Tsotsi...which won an oscar for best foreign film of the year!! :wow: This is good news!

I hope saber tooth has a part in it, even if it's small...

Gavid Hood is a great choice. Really Really better than Caruso or Wiseman. But why is Goyer the director of Magneto?! Why?

I don't think Goyer is a bad director. He just took on more than he could chew with Blade Trinity, and Invisible didn't have great content. I'll give him another shot here as his direction was not bad. Blade Trinity was just a huge mistake taking the focus of the lead.

Hood seems like a good choice, but Fox can **** up a wet dream. Even if this movie is shot, and originally intended to be gritty, Fox can turn it into a kiddy firiendly, popcorn debacal ala FF, DD and X3...i'm keeping my fingers crossed.

 Ha ha brilliant and so true!

I wouldn´t call DD or X3 kiddie friendly... But chopped off (DD), rushed and unfinished (X3), totally.

I like it that Gavin seems to be a talented writer too - at least from what I hear, haven´t seen his work -. word out there is that Beniof´s script is really bad and that´s why the project is taking so long to get done - apparently a number of directors turned the script down.

Why base it on 'word out there. - Beniof's script has been revealed and reviewed on here and elsewhere! We all didn't think it was 'really bad'. Although, this being a fan site, many people had suggestions about it.

Well, the script has never actually been fully revealed or reviewed... at least not by any of us. We've only been privy to reviews and other various summarizations.

Well, LatinoReview and this site included tons of information on the content of the script, along with someone else's review of it. I feel like I know the entire film already.

Whether it will be any good, I really don't know. It's out of our hands. We'll get what we'll get.

I hate sites like this, to be honest. Shame my addiction to superheroes draws me here. All we all do is endlessly speculate, dissect, analyse, bash, post impossible wish-lists and fanboy demands, there's rarely any satisfaction with anything... it's easy to forget about actually watching the movies themselves and enjoying what they DO have to offer. We all think we can do better... if we could, then why aren't we! Instead we sit here in our chairs going on and on... sigh... Well, it's late and I'm tired, so I guess that's why I'm ranting on... I think i need an evening actually watching my superhero movies and enjoying the darn things!

who is this guy?
Ever heard of imdb.com? Or wikipedia? Or Google?

Or reading some, if not all the posts in the thread. Or the original article.

Sorry mods.

^ Reading that post I was waiting for a boxing glove to burst out of my monitor. LOL

I didn´t read it myself, but one has to wonder why finding a director took so long if the script was good, considering that Fox wanted this movie for summer 2008, and it´s gonna be yet another rushed production if they insist on it. What can you tell me about it?

I know exactly how you feel... People here often set up impossible expectations, are narrow-minded to any changes, even if reasonable ones, set their minds to dislike ideas, actors, designs, etc. before they see the actual movie - people who´ve been on set say Heath Ledger is doing a terrific job as Joker, and some fanboys still treat it like it was the casting of Halle Berry as Catwoman without seeing a single frame of the guy playing it -- overanalyze, dream up a whole movie in their heads and get disappointed when it´s not their fantasy...

If they try to get this out for summer 2008 it will be a disaster IMO

Wha...?!?! Weapon X by Frank Miller?!?! :cmad: And recent?!?!
What an accurate research that journalist guy did... :whatever:

Well, other than that, I'm actually jumping with joy!
I always wanted for "Wolverine" a director who wasn't so mainstream or action-oriented, so I'm really really happy with that choice of a more serious director. There's nothing wrong with popcorn movies, they have their audience and can be fun, but I never saw the Wolvie movie as a popcorn one. So yay Hugh, Gavin and Lauren! Yay Wolvie! :wolverine :woot:

In a nutshell... Logan volunteers for Weapon X program after Sabretooth (who is killing mutants for Stryker) apparently kills his lover Silver Fox. He wants Stryker to give him the adamantium so he is able to kill Sabretooth. He then goes off, trying to find him, ends up in Vegas, including a nightclub full of mutants and a fight with Blob, then ends up back at the Weapon X facility, where he discovers Stryker creating an army of 10,000 Sabretooth clones (earlier draft had this as 10,000 Sentinels) and Silver Fox still alive (her death was all staged to get Wolverine to volunteer for the program..Logan had false memories implanted). Logan stops the Sabre-clones and Stryker shoots Silver Fox. Logan takes name Wolverine from an Inuit myth told to him by Silver Fox.

It has logic gaps --- Silver Fox's power is mind-control so why doesn't she mentally force Logan to join Weapon X, rather than planting fake memories of her death? And why is all the Vegas stuff needed - it sounds cool but odd. A lot of people were unsure about the 10,000 Sabretooth clones... In an original draft, Weapon X needed some mutant DNA samples (from Wolverine) to program Sentinels for mutant detection.... but why was only his DNA acceptable if many other mutants were known (and being killed!)?

So, I guess the script has potential but needs picking apart and beating into shape to iron out plotholes.

Tsotsi is a very good film...It had an amazing visual style and was really dark. So it makes perfect sense for Wolverine. Hood should definitely be a promising choice. I think he'll do an excellent job with the film, as well as it's characters.

Agreed. The least thing they should do is rush it...Most likely late 2008 is what we'll be hearing.
